BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo held talks with Harry Jenkins, speaker of the House of Representatives of Australia, on Wednesday, with both sides pledging closer ties and more parliamentary exchanges between the two countries."China and Australia share extensive interests and broad cooperative potential in terms of developing bilateral ties and dealing with global challenges," said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature.China regards Australia as an important cooperative partner in the Asia-Pacific region and is willing to work with Australia to address each other's concerns and deepen cooperation from a strategic and long-term perspective, Wu said.Jenkins is in Beijing to attend the second meeting of a regular exchange mechanism of the two countries' parliaments which is scheduled for Thursday.It is Jenkins' first visit to China as speaker of the House of Representatives.Wu Bangguo (R), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, meets with Harry Jenkins, Speaker of House of Representatives of Australia, in Beijing, China, April 7, 2010.Since the regular exchange mechanism was set up in 2006, it has become an important platform for increasing mutual understanding and promoting mutually-beneficial cooperation, Wu said, urging the two parliaments to have in-depth exchanges of views on issues of common concern.Jenkins hoped to have a better understanding of China through the seven-day visit, which will also take him to Guangdong Province, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Shanghai.Also on Wednesday, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met with Jenkins.Xi said China and Australia, as important countries in the Asia-Pacific region, have extensive interests and solid basis for cooperation to safeguard regional peace and stability, promote regional and global economic growth and to deal with global challenges."A healthy and stable China-Australia relationship complies with the interests of the two countries and peoples," said Xi.Xi said that China and Australia should increase high-level visits and exchanges at various levels and cement mutually-beneficial cooperation in areas like trade, energy, environmental protection, technology and culture.

BEIJING, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday called for more efforts to cut emissions and conserve energy to meet the country's target set by the 11th Five-Year Plan.According to the plan laid out in 2006, China will cut its per unit GDP energy consumption by 20 percent compared with 2005 levels by the end of 2010.The task of fulfilling the goal was still tough , Wen said at a State Council meeting, adding that this year would be particularly difficult as the first quarter had already seen rising energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) in the major industrial sectors.In the first three months, six major industries, including steel, power and non-ferrous, saw a 3.2 percent growth in energy consumption per unit of GDP, Wen said.  Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C) addresses a State Council meeting of conserving energy and cutting emissions in Beijing, China, on May 5, 2010. BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China's drought relief authorities said Tuesday heavy rains had eased the drought in southwest China's Sichuan Province, but dry weather and high temperatures continued in other affected regions.Compared with data collected last Sunday, people and livestock facing shortage of drinking water in Sichuan had decreased by 500,000 and 560,000 respectively by Tuesday, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH).Heavy rains also reduced the area of affected arable land in Sichuan by 2.33 million mu (155,333 hectares) by Tuesday, according to the SFDH.However, drought still persisted in other areas, including the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as rain in these regions was far from adequate.As of Tuesday, drought had left 24.62 million people and 18.08 million livestock short of drinking water, said the statement.

  

BEIJING, June 1 (Xinhua) -- China Tuesday released details of its green-car subsidy program designed to boost the nation's auto industry and cut vehicle emissions.Through the program, subsidies of up to 60,000 yuan (8,784 U.S. dollars) will be given to buyers of pure electric vehicles in the five cities chosen for the pilot program, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement on its website.Buyers of plug-in hybrid cars will receive up to 50,000 yuan in subsidies.The cities chosen for the pilot program are Shanghai, Changchun, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Hefei.China is the world's largest auto market.
