LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The U.S. Justice Department in Los Angeles announced today that it has obtained an additional .4 million for servicemembers whose vehicles were repossessed by Wells Fargo Bank in violation of federal law.Wells Fargo reached a million settlement with federal prosecutors last year over allegations it illegally repossessed more than 400 cars owned by members of the military without a court order. The settlement resolves alleged violations of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which protects service members against certain civil proceedings that could affect their legal rights while they are in the service. The additional amount brings the total compensation under the settlement to more than .1 million and the total number of servicemembers eligible for relief to more than 860."The SCRA provides important protections and is intended to prevent unnecessary financial hardship for the brave women and men who serve in our armed forces," said acting U.S. Attorney Sandra R. Brown."Losing an automobile through an unlawful repossession while serving our country is a problem servicemembers should not have to confront. We are pleased that Wells Fargo is taking action to compensate these additional servicemembers as required under the settlement with the Justice Department."The settlement covers repossessions that occurred between Jan. 1, 2008, and July 1, 2015. The agreement requires Wells Fargo to pay ,000 to each of the affected military members, plus any lost equity in the vehicle with interest.Wells Fargo also must repair the credit of all affected soldiers. The agreement also requires Wells Fargo to pay a ,000 civil penalty to the United States and to determine, in the future, if any vehicle it is planning to repossess is owned by an active duty service member. 1823

LOS ANGELES (AP) — As the coronavirus pandemic forced people to stay put, it gave sharks a travel passport and scientists a rare opportunity. Ocean spots cleared of fishing boats and other intrusions saw increased and even unusual marine life behavior, and Discovery Channel’s Shark Week jumped through hoops to capitalize on the brief window. Its 32nd annual Shark Week slate includes a pair of shows taped earlier this year during the lull. The virus-related shows are “Shark Lockdown,” airing at 10 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, and “Abandoned Waters,” airing 8 p.m. Eastern on Monday. A record 24 shows will air during Shark Week, which starts Sunday and continues through Aug. 16. 687

hit him, she did something that would cause him to shoot her."But the crime took place in a small room with clutter and there was no sign of a struggle, he said.Scott wasn't injured and didn't have any marks on him, but there is a telling sign on Kanokwan's head, the lawyer said."When the officer was describing the wound, the officer describes a black ring around the wound that only happens when a gun is very, very close to somebody’s head. So we’re talking like an inch away or so," the lawyer said.Just a couple weeks ago, Scott filed for divorce. Now, he’s waiting to see if the District Attorney's Office decides to press charges and take him into custody. This story was originally published by Ivan Rodriguez at KMGH. 2272

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — A helicopter crashed offshore near Jones Inlet Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.Officials said the pilot, a 64-year-old man, appeared to be attempting a controlled descent at Meadow Island at around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. The chopper landed in an area with about three feet of water.Rescue crews from the Coast Guard and several other local agencies responded. The pilot was rescued from the aircraft and taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, including a facial laceration and back and rib pain. He was the only one on board. There was also some damage to the helicopter.Chief Petty Officer David Turner of the U.S. Coast Guard said he did not know the cause of the crash, nor did he know details of the flight plan. There was very thick fog in the area Wednesday, and while Turner did not know if it was a contributing factor to the landing, he said it's difficult to operate in those conditions.Visibility was only a half-mile in the area at the time of the incident with misty conditions in the area."I kept on hearing this helicopter, circling and circling, and after a couple of circles, it didn't sound right to me," said Damian Walsh the man who helped rescue the pilot and took video of the immediate aftermath.Walsh was out on his boat when he says a thick fog quickly rolled in around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon."It turned pretty quickly probably had about 20 yards of visibility," he said.He and another boater rushed to the scene after hearing a loud splash. One coast guard officer told Walsh that the pilot fell 1,000 feet in three seconds. The helicopter fell into shallow water."He was lucky; if he fell 50 yards over, he wouldn't have survived," Walsh said. "I got him on the boat; I called his wife, let her know he was alight."Walsh said he and a couple of other Good Samaritans got him over to rescuers."They wouldn't have found him in that fog. I was in the right place at the right time," he said. The investigation into the landing is ongoing. This story was originally published by Corey Crockett and Cristian Benavides on WPIX in New York City. 2123

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California dam could fail during an extreme storm and send water flooding into Mojave Desert communities that are home to about 300,000 people, authorities said Friday. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that it has changed its risk characterization of the Mojave River Dam from low to high urgency of action. The Corps says it estimates that only 16,000 people in those communities would be affected by flooding. The earthen dam was built in the 1970s near the San Bernardino Mountains northeast of Los Angeles. It was designed for flood control and is usually dry.The 200-foot-high (61-meter-high) dam has never breached but an assessment last year found that during an extreme storm, water could flow over the top and erode the dam. That could threaten Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville, Barstow and even the tiny town of Baker, more than 140 miles (225.3 kilometers) downstream. The chances of such a storm are only about 1-in-10,000, said Luciano Vera, spokesman for the Los Angeles district of the Army Corps of Engineers. However, "all it takes is one event ... one Katrina, one Hurricane Harvey," Vera said. "These storms are happening more and more, so this is our way of looking toward the future."The corps has been working with local communities on emergency preparation plans and will also begin a study on upgrading and strengthening the dam, Vera said.Since 2005's devastating Katrina, the corps has been looking at all of its 700 dams nationwide. In May, the corps upgraded the risk characterization of Prado Dam to high urgency. That dam is located on the Santa Ana River in the Los Angeles suburb of Corona. Dozens of Southern California cities with about 1.4 million people live downstream.Work to improve the dam has been under way since 2002 to increase the amount of floodwaters and sediment it can store. In 2017, some 200,000 people in three Sierra Nevada counties were forced to evacuate after spillways at the Oroville Dam crumbled and fell away during heavy rains.Flooding didn't happen, however, and the dam has since been repaired. 2092
