SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two women are launching a new nonprofit, Black San Diego, to bolster Black-owned businesses locally.It started at a kitchen table over chips and salsa four years ago. Sheri Jones, a real estate broker, and physical education teacher Tinicia Smith wanted to create a hub for Black-owned businesses in San Diego.They created a Facebook group called Black San Diego and now they're more than 34,000 members strong."For the last four years we've been able to collect data and what we realize is that business owners haven't been able to sustain because they don't have the tools," Jones said.She first noticed the issue when she was running her real estate business and went to a conference. She said she was the one Black person there and it was uncomfortable."I knew when I was having trouble, others must be too," Jones said.This week, Black San Diego became official, registered through the government and they're excited to plan workshops to offer those tools to the community. Jones described the workshop as, "an 8-week course where they can go through and get business basics, book keeping, business taxes, really how to formulate their corporation."Newly Appointed Board Member and CEO of Growth 1031 Lance Growth said these workshops are crucial for black-owned businesses like his."I stumbled into my position.. I made so many mistakes and I just had to sit down and learn from those mistakes," he said. "I'm going to send my operations lady, and ask her to take some extra notes on accounting, on marketing, on filing correctly, but it's a really beneficial tool."The workshop costs 0 per business and the nonprofit is launching a donation campaign to sponsor local Black-owned businesses."If the dollar circulates in the Black community then we can unite and produce generational wealth and that's what we're here to do," Smith said.They hope to bring members of their community out and help them elevate their business, "they don't want to step in the front, not get criticized, not get caught up in the chaos. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two San Diego police officers answered an unusual call to duty when an emergency struck, leaving two young children alone.SDPD officers Daniel Clark and Adrianni Vital have been a part of the department for about a year.Last Friday night, police received a call about a father in San Ysidro having a medical emergency, but he did not have any family or others to watch his two young daughters.After he was taken to the hospital, Clark and Vital stayed behind to watch the man’s 2-year-old and 4-year-old daughters.“Just to put a smile on their face, it meant a lot, it was a great interaction; it just made my day,” said Vital. “We just want to show people that we are human, too, and we do want to give back, and sometimes it comes in different shapes and sizes in how we do it."The officers did everything they could to keep the girls entertained so they would not worry about their dad.Using his own experience as a father, Clark learned more about the children’s likes and dislikes, and the officers eventually found out the girls loved the song “Baby Shark.”ABC 10News learned the girls’ father is doing OK and the family was reunited after about two hours. 1190

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two local hikers are back in San Diego and after making a bizarre discovery on a remote trail in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.On a beautiful day two weeks ago, Tyler Hofer and Brandon Follin were in their second day of a hike up Mt. Williamson, the state's second's highest peak."Very remote, very rugged," said Hofer.The 14,000-foot summit was just three hours away when they got a bit off track in a boulder-filled area near a lake."It's called the Williamson Bowl. It's a bowl at the foot of Mt. Williamson," said Hofer.Inside the rocky bowl, the two were stepping across boulders when something caught Hofer's eye."I look down and see what appears to be a different color rock. Instead of gray, it's white," said Hofer.Wedged under a small boulder was a human skull."We just start removing rocks about one to two feet in diameter," said Hofer.Under those rocks was a skeleton, mostly intact."The arms were crossed on its chest ... as if you were lying in a casket or coffin ... almost as if someone laid it there peacefully," said Hofer. Also buried in the rocks: the remnants of a leather belt and rubber shoes. "In shock and in awe of what we found and the context in which we found it," said Hofer.The two reached the summit to get cell service and reported their findings to Inyo County deputies. Investigators say there are no signs of foul play and no matches to any missing persons reports. Based on the state of decomposition, the coroner believes the skeleton is several decades old."I'm just honored to be part of uncovering this mystery, because that's what it is," said Hofer.Hofer, a local youth pastor, is hopeful the discovery will lead to answers."That gives me a lot of joy knowing someone is going to get closure. That is someone's loved one," said Hofer.Investigators say they're following up on tips that have poured in. They also plan to conduct DNA tests, before matching results against genealogy databases. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two men are dead and a woman is in critical condition after a car crashed into a Mission Valley bus stop Thursday.A driver collided with the three pedestrians in the 7500 block of Metropolitan Drive around 11 a.m. The driver remained at the scene for San Diego Police.One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The other male victim was later pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. Both victims were identified as men in their 40s.A 49-year-old woman was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, police say.Police and a friend of the female victim say the three pedestrians were sleeping behind the bus stop with their belongings at the time of the crash. Jessica Nelson said she knew the 49-year-old woman and brought her some clothing and make-up earlier that day. She said she tried to convince her to go eat with friends, but the woman stayed with her husband, according to Nelson.Nelson said the pink bags strewn about the crash sight belonged to the victim, she called Kelly.Nelson said she met Kelly a year and a half ago at the bus stop where the accident took place. She said they are both battling heroin addiction and frequent the methadone clinic nearby.San Diego Police are investigating the crash.10News is monitoring this breaking news. 1301
