LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Adopters from across North America will travel to LAX Sunday to welcome some very special new members of their families — dogs rescued from the Chinese dog-meat trade. Two flights will arrive Sunday carrying a total of 27 canines, who will find loving homes in the United States and Canada thanks to the efforts of No Dogs Left Behind — a nonprofit group that rescues dogs from slaughterhouses, dog meat trucks, wet markets, and illegal dog traffickers.Eighteen of the dogs are beagles, and they'll be staying with fosters who work with The Beagle Freedom Project, which is sponsoring the flight along with NDLB and New York-based Rescue Paw Foundation. The remaining nine dogs have already been adopted. They were chosen via emails, phone calls, and even video chats, and will be greeted at the airport on Sunday by their new families, including some who have waited almost a year to meet their new furry friends."It takes a special person to fall in love with one of these sweet survivors over pictures and videos," Brandy Cherven, NDLB's president of adoptions and transports, told City News Service. "They never gave up on their dogs, and we are forever grateful to them. We are overjoyed to finally get them home where they belong."Kristine Wallace, director of operations for NDLB, said Sunday "will be a very exciting and emotional time for everyone involved to see the survivors start their new life as cherished members of a new family."The second flight was arranged to accommodate two larger dogs, a Malamute named Timber and a three-legged Husky named Ingrid whose crates were too large to fit on the first flight. For all the dogs, it will mark the conclusion of a long ordeal that featured a post-rescue quarantine, an overseas flight, and Customs review at LAX.Jeffrey Beri, the driving force behind NDLB, has spent four years on the ground in China rescuing and rehabilitating dogs — the last 10 months under especially tough conditions amid the coronavirus pandemic.Once then animals are rescued, they are taken to NDLB's shelters in China, where they receive medical care, nutritional support, and physical and emotional rehabilitation to make them adoptable. NDLB currently has 150 rescued dogs at its shelters in Beijing, many rescued during the pandemic, and more transport flights are planned as soon as flight space allows. The Los Angeles flights follow two similar flights to JFK Airport in New York last month, where 79 dogs were welcomed by their adoptive families during the Thanksgiving holiday.According to NDLB, as many as 20 million dogs are slaughtered in China every year, most for human consumption and others because of the country's lack of animal welfare laws. The Beagle Freedom Project is a global animal rescue and advocacy nonprofit that is known for rescuing and re-homing animals used in experimental research.More information on the groups' rescue efforts can be viewed at bfp.org, and www.nodogsleftbehind.com. 2979

LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - Video of a woman singing opera at a Metro stop in Los Angeles is going viral. A Metro police officer recorded the video on the Purple Line's Normandie/Wilshire Metro stop Tuesday evening, KABC reported. "4 million people call LA home. 4 million stories. 4 million voices...sometimes you just have to stop and listen to one, to hear something beautiful,” read the LAPD twitter post. The identity of the woman, seen holding bags of possessions, was not immediately available. The song is Puccini's "O mio babbino caro", a popular soprano aria from the opera "Gianni Schicchi". 4 million people call LA home. 4 million stories. 4 million voices...sometimes you just have to stop and listen to one, to hear something beautiful. pic.twitter.com/VzlmA0c6jX— LAPD HQ (@LAPDHQ) September 27, 2019 818

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Scientists say earthquakes that hammered the Southern California desert last summer involved ruptures on a web of interconnected faults and increased strain on a major nearby fault that has begun to slowly move.Research published Thursday in the journal Science says the earthquake sequence ended a few miles from the Garlock Fault, which runs 185 miles (300 kilometers) from the San Andreas Fault to Death Valley. The fault has been relatively quiet for 500 years but now has begun to creep. The quakes began July 4 near Ridgecrest, about 120 miles (190 kilometers) north of Los Angeles.A magnitude 6.4 foreshock was followed by a 7.1 mainshock and 100,000-plus aftershocks. The study was conducted by geophysicists from California Institute of Technology and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. 818

LITTLETON, Colo. — A local woman says she entered the My Oreo Creation contest, her idea was picked as a finalist, yet she's never been acknowledged by Oreo as a winner.Taylor Young, of Lone Tree, submitted her idea for a cherry cola flavored Oreo last May. Shortly after submitting her idea, she received a note from Oreo and its parent company, Mondelez International, Inc., that read, "Dear Taylor Young, Thanks for sending us your idea. We thought it was so delicious, we turned it into this one-of-a-kind creation just for you. Straight from the wonder vault. Enjoy!"They also sent her a small packet with two cherry cola flavored Oreo cookies inside."It is pretty good,” Young said. “I tried it.”Young was on cloud nine. The contest states all finalists are awarded ,000. And it states the person who submits the winning flavor will win 0,000.“I, from what I can tell, was the first person to tweet that idea," Young said. But then, for Young, the contest turned sour. Oreo stopped communicating with her. Months went by and in December, she saw her cookie on store shelves.“I reached out to them and I said, 'I'm seeing that my cookie won," Young said.Oreo finally responded saying in part, cherry cola was already in development — so it wasn't her idea, it was theirs."That's not cool," Young said. "If they claim that they already had it in their back pocket, then they don't need to provide prizes to anyone."Oreo and its parent company did not respond to a request for comment. Young finds the whole thing to be disingenuous.“I'm old enough to realize that life isn't always fair,” Young said. “But, if there was a kid who came up with this - and their mom and dad submitted it and they saw it on the shelves, that's really sad. No one deserves that.” 1804

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Automobile Club of Southern California says it's expecting this year's Thanksgiving holiday to be the busiest in Southern California since 2005, with 4.2 million residents expected to get away for the long weekend. That's a 5.1 percent increase over last year, the AAA said in a statement. The vast majority of Southern California travelers -- 3.6 million or 86 percent of all travelers -- will drive to their destinations, a 5.1 percent increase over last year. Another 476,000 Southern Californians are expected to fly, which is an increase of 5.9 percent from the 2017 holiday, while 123,000 will go by other means, such as train, bus or cruise, which will represent a 1.2 percent increase over last year. The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as five days from Wednesday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 25, and a holiday trip is defined as one of at least 50 miles from home. The all-time record number of Thanksgiving travelers was set in 2005, when 58.6 million nationwide, 6.9 million statewide and nearly 4.3 million in Southern California took holiday trips.RELATED: Check?traffic conditions for your holiday trip``Even with an average 5 percent increase in Thanksgiving holiday airfares over last year, consumer confidence has continued to increase demand for air-travel destinations,'' said Filomena Andre, the Auto Club's vice president for travel products and services.Anaheim is expected to be the third most popular destination for Thanksgiving travelers nationwide, according to AAA's online and travel agency bookings.  A survey of the Auto Club's travel agents reveals the top five destinations for Southern Californians this holiday are: 1) Las Vegas  2) San Diego  3) San Francisco  4) Grand Canyon  5) Anaheim. The transportation analytics firm INRIX, in collaboration with AAA,predicts drivers will experience the greatest amount of congestion Thanksgiving week during the early evening commute period, with travel times starting to increase on Monday. In general, the Auto Club recommends travelers plan an early morning start. If travelers' schedules are flexible, the best days to travel during Thanksgiving week will likely be early today, Friday and Saturday.``No matter when drivers leave for their holiday trips, we remind them, `Don't Drive Intoxicated,'' said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring.``An increase in traffic requires extra focus on the road ahead and we want drivers to remember texting while driving could lead to the same deadly consequences as alcohol-impaired driving.''According to INRIX, the heaviest congestion period in Southern California will be between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, on southbound Interstate 5 between Pacific Coast Highway in south Orange County (Exit 79) and Coast Highway in Oceanside (Exit 54B). The worst time to leave from downtown Los Angeles for LAX via I-110 South over this holiday period, according toINRIX, will be Tuesday, Nov. 20 between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.Southern California gas prices are dropping at a fairly steady pacefrom their highest levels since 2014 but are expected to still be 50 to 60 cents higher per gallon than during last year' holiday. The Auto Club recommends that travelers use a free app like AAA Mobile to shop virtually for the cheapest gas prices along their route.AAA expects to help 101,000 stranded drivers in California and nearly 360,000 at the roadside across the country during this Thanksgiving holiday.Dead batteries, flat tires and lockouts will be the main reasons for members to call AAA for a roadside rescue. AAA recommends motorists take their vehicle to a trusted repair facility to perform any needed maintenance before heading out. 3750
