TIANJIN, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China has become Volvo's third largest market, with more of its car models to go on sale in the world's largest auto market this year, Chief Executive Office (CEO) of Volvo Cars China said in Tianjin.Dr. Alexander Klose, CEO of Volvo Cars China, told Xinhua at the Ninth Tianjin International Automobile Trade Show, being held from Friday to Wednesday.Klose said Volvo Cars had entered a new era of fast development, adding that its sales in China roared in 2010.As of the end of September, Volvo's global sales volume was up 12.5 percent year on year, compared with 52 percent year-on-year rise in China, he said.Volvo also aggressively expanded its dealer network to 98 outlets in 81 Chinese cities this year. Two new Volvo sales centers opened in Beijing within merely one week in early October, about two months after east China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. acquired the Swedish brand from the U.S. auto giant Ford for 1.5 billion U.S. dollars in early August.Dr. Klose said he was confident of seeing tremendous growth in China's auto market in the next five years."As the Chinese government has increased the tax rate for large displacement cars already, we now have a lot of cars below three liters, and I think we'll stick to that strategy, as you can see now the XC60 which was introduced today is just two liters," he said."As the technology advances, we'll probably even see 1.6 liter engines or 1.5 liter engines in the future," he added.Volvo Cars is not the only automaker hoping to take advantage of China's rapidly growing auto market.Bentley, the famous British luxury carmaker, will open a new sales center in China at Tianjin next Thursday, which is the 11th one in China, according to a press release by Shanghai-based Zenith Integrated Communications Corp. (Zenith) Saturday at the auto show.Zenith is the public relations agent of Bentley in China. The automaker has sold 421 limousines to China in 2009, and the goal for 2010 is 777, the release said.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday said the country's 12th five-year development plan, starting in 2011, should reflect the consensus of the entire society and motivate people from all walks of life.He also encouraged national political advisors to actively offer suggestions for the plan.Wen made the remarks in Beijing at a meeting of the Standing Committee of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top advisory body. The national political advisors convened their meeting two days after the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee ended a four-day plenary session that set the outline of the 12th five-year plan, with key objectives in economic restructuring and improving living standards nationwide among others. In Wednesday's meeting, Wen said the State Council, or the Cabinet, would draw up the plan as outlined by the CPC Central Committee. He also said the theme of the 12th five-year plan was "scientific development" and would require China to accelerate the transformation of its economic growth mode, which he called "a strategic task of great urgency."The meeting was presided over by Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee.

The success rate of the bank's projects in China are among the highest in the world, Li said.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (R) meets with World Bank President Robert Zoellick in Beijing, Sept. 13, 2010."The cooperation between China and the World Bank is fruitful and mutually beneficial," he added. The World Bank wishes to further expand cooperation with China and to introduce China's experience of reform and development to other developing countries, said Robert Zoellick.

BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- China began its sixth nationwide population census at midnight Monday to document the demographic changes in the world's most populous country and form basis for policy making.More than 6 million census workers are to knock on the doors of about 400 million households across the country in the following 10 days. Results of the 8-billion-yuan census will be released by the end of next April.WHEN MIDNIGHT CAMEWhen it came to midnight on Monday and the census was officially begun, 28-year-old Wang Yi in Jinan, capital of east China's Shandong, began knocking on a door in an apartment building.A young man with a drowsy look opened the door.Wang, after showing his certificate as a census worker, explained why he had to disturb him at midnight. In the preliminary poll conducted to prepare for the census, Wang and his colleagues could not find him. Neither did the young man respond to the notice that census takers left at his door. The man, who had missed the poll due to business elsewhere, appeared to be very cooperative and quickly fill out the questionnaire which had questions about name, age, job and housing condition. In Zhejiang, a east China province with active private economy, census takers are visiting migrant workers at night. In dim light on a square of Huzhou City, Zhejiang, 16 martial arts performers from Henan living in their vans were interviewed. After the interviews, each of the 16 migrants received a card proving that they had been surveyed so that they would not be counted twice.DIFFERENCE THIS TIMEDifferent from previous census, the floating population this year was registered at where they actually live, rather than where their permanent residence is as written on their ID cards. Also, for the first time people from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as foreigners in the Chinese mainland, are included in the census. But those on short-term business or sight-seeing trips will not be covered. The census will collect data on foreigner's name, age, gender, nationality, educational attainment, purpose and duration of stay. Questionnaires for foreigners are simpler than those for Chinese.Ma Li, director of the Research Center for Chinese Population and Development, said the changes were necessary."To register according to where the floating population are could help us avoid mistakes like registering a person twice," she said.Driven by the fast-paced social and economical development, China's floating population is growing at a rate of 1.24 percent per year and China is now home to some 230 million migrant workers. To register them in the census is very difficult, Ma added.Jiang Xiangqun, a professor with the School of Sociology and Population Studies, Renmin University, noted that some new questions were added to the census form this year, such as health condition, housing condition and social insurance."The population of seniors is growing," he said. "Such question will help the government make policies to provide for the aged."HARD BUT HELPFULAs Chinese people's awareness of privacy grows, census takers are facing difficulty in getting the information they need.Wang Xin was a census taker in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province."In front of our compound there was a lady in her 40s selling pickles," she recalled. "During the preliminary poll, she refused to tell us her phone number."Wang and her colleagues took turns buying pickles from the lady, who finally told them her phone number.Wang's fellow worker, 58-year-old Zhu Rongquan, noted that in some compounds the real estate companies were not very cooperative. "In one compound the real estate company even warned us not to disturb the residents."Zhu had to wait outside in the cold wind, approaching the residents before they entered the building gate."Some residents were sympathetic, asking us to go in and gave us a cup of hot water," he said gratefully.During the door-to-door visit, census takers could encounter various problems.Wang Bin, a 38-year-old worker from Shijiazhuang City of Hebei, could not find a man registered as being born in 1919. After asking many people she learned that the man had died."I have had more than 40 such cases: someone was registered as alive but actually was dead," she said.China conducted its first nationwide population census in 1953. Since 1990 it has conducted the census every ten years. In the last census, China's population stood at 1.295 billion. (Xinhua reporter Wang Ying from Liaoning, Xiao Sisi from Guangdong, Yin Lijuan from Beijing, Ren Liying from Hebei and Liu Baosen from Shandong contributed to the report)

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's work safety supervisor will soon launch a nationwide inspection campaign on coal mines to crack down on illegal mining and prevent deadly accidents.A spokesman of the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS) said Sunday the campaign, which starts on Oct. 10 and lasts until Nov. 30, will check whether accident-prone small coal mines of outdated capacity have been shut down according to state policies.Technological upgrades, merger and acquisition of coal mines will also be examined during the campaign, the spokesman said.According to the SAWS, 1,539 small coal mines of outdated capacity have to be closed in China this year to meet the country's carbon dioxide emission and pollution-reduction requirements.China's annual fatalities at coal mines had dropped from a peak of 6,995 deaths in 2002 to 2,631 in 2009, according to data from the SAWS.Six people were killed and 12 were injured in a coal mine gas outburst Sunday in southwest China's Guizhou Province, a spokesman with the provincial work safety bureau said. The accident occurred at around 1:20 a.m. Sunday in Xinglong Coal Mine in Tongzi County, Zunyi City of Guizhou, said the spokesman.Thirty-five people were working in the mine when the accident happened. Twenty-two people escaped, and another 12 were rescued. One worker missing was later found dead in the mine, and five died when being taken to hospital.
