BEIJING, July 29 (Xinhua) -- The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy had conducted a large scale of live-ammunition training exercise in the South China Sea, according to a front-page report on Thursday's PLA Daily newspaper.The exercise, which was carried out on July 26, brought together a large group of warships, submarines and combat aircraft.During the exercise, warships and submarines from the Navy's South China Sea Fleet performed precision strikes on surface targets by firing guided missiles while surface warships conducted anti-missile air defense operations, said the PLA's official newspaper.A naval aviation fleet also participated in air control operations, according to the report, which did not specify the exact location of the training or the number of participating warships.In overseeing the training, General Chen Bingde, PLA's chief of the General Staff, said that the PLA should "pay close attention to the development of situation and tasks" and make "solid preparation for military struggle which depends on massive military training" .

WUXI, Jiangsu, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Yuan Longping, known as the "father of hybrid rice", said on Sunday that his team was working on a new version of high-yield hybrid rice and might complete it in 2012.Yuan, director of the National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center and a faculty member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, made the remarks at the World Expo's third theme forum, which opened on Sunday in Wuxi, in east China's Jiangsu Province.The new hybrid, the phase-III super hybrid rice, was expected to yield 13.5 tonnes of rice per hectare, Yuan said.The previous hybrid, the second-generation super hybrid, was released for commercial production in 2006, yielding 9 tonnes of rice per hectare, on averageRice is a major food crop that feeds more than half of the world's population, Yuan said.China is now planting 440 million mu (29 million hectares) of rice per year, with an average output capacity of 6.3 tonnes per hectare.Among the acreage, hybrid rice accounts for about 57 percent of the total, with an average output capacity of 7.2 tonnes per hectare."The average yield of hybrid rice is at least 20 percent more than that of inbred rice, feeding 70 million more people annually," Yuan said.China is faced with a challenging grain situation this summer because of strong rainfalls in the south during the summer harvest season. BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- There have been no reports of an epidemic outbreak or public health incident in the northwestern Zhouqu County that was hit by a massive mudslide Sunday, a health official said Wednesday.Zhang Guoxin, vice director of the emergency office of the Health Ministry, made the remarks at a press conference in Beijing.Emergency medical rescue work was coming to an end and now epidemic prevention was the priority for health authorities, Zhang said.At least 702 people were killed and 1,042 others are missing after Sunday's mudslide.A total of 422 injured have been treated as of 10 a.m. Wednesday. All those who were seriously hurt have been sent to hospitals in the cities of Lanzhou and Tianshui, Zhang said.A survivor who was rescued 60 hours after the mudslide has been transferred to the Gansu Provincial People's Hospital and was currently in stable condition."All the injured have been properly treated," Zhang said.Forty-seven civilian and military medical teams with 779 members are working in Zhouqu, nine of whom are extremely well qualified and rank among the best in the country.A total area of 310,000 square meters has been sterilized by the teams.Health authorities have prepared 50,000 pamphlets on health risks for local residents.Zhang said health authorities were attempting to rebuild hospitals and clinics in Zhouqu as quickly as possible.

BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature will discuss the constitutional reform package of Hong Kong, which refers to the amendments to the methods of selecting the city's Chief Executive and forming the Legislative Council in 2012, during a bimonthly session scheduled from Aug. 23 to 28.The draft amendments to Annexes I to the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region concerning the methods for the selection of the Chief Executive was submitted to the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee for approval by Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang.The draft amendments to Annexes II concerning the formation of the city's Legislative Council was submitted to the NPC Standing Committee for the record.The Legislative Council of Hong Kong passed the draft amendments in June, before Donald Tsang gave his consent to draft amendments later in the month.According to Monday's Chairmen's Council of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over by NPC Standing Committee Chairman Wu Bangguo, lawmakers will also continue to deliberate draft amendments to the law on officers in reserve service, the draft law on mediation, as well as the draft law on the application of laws to civil relationships involving foreign interests.Lawmakers will also deliberate for the first time draft amendments to the law of deputies to the NPC and local People's Congresses, draft amendments to the Criminal Law, the draft law on intangible cultural heritages, and the draft revision of the soil and water conservation law.Also on the agenda of the upcoming session are discussions of the reports on implementation of the national economic and social development plan and budgets, among others.
