Have you ever wanted to know exactly what your dog is thinking? Pet owners around the country are starting to get the answers, with help from a device teaching animals how to talk."I really wanted a smart dog because I was pretty invested in the training process," said Alexis Devine, from Tacoma, Washington.Devine knew early on she wanted to test the boundaries of communication with her Sheepadoodle, Bunny. She was inspired by speech pathologist Christina Hunger, who went viral for teaching her dog how to talk with an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system. These devices are typically used in speech therapy to help non-verbal people to communicate. "I thought when we get our puppy, I have to try this out, and I bought the buttons long before we got Bunny," said Devine. Devine started small, purchasing a few sound buttons from Amazon. "Outside" was Bunny's first word. Devine pressed it every time they left the house, and soon enough, Bunny was pushing it on her own to go outside."She uses 'park' and 'beach' constantly, 'outside' quite a bit. She uses 'walk' a lot, 'ball', 'tug', and 'hippo' are really popular. 'Love you, mom,' are really popular," Devine said. Now, with over 40 buttons, Bunny is starting to form sentences."One of her longest sentences to date was, 'Home. Concerned. Soon poop, yes,' which felt very much like a toddler," Devine explained. "Like, 'I have to poop right now. We're in the house. I don't want to be.'" In addition to narrating what's happening around her, Bunny communicates what she wants and how she feels."A couple of days ago she pressed 'help' and then 'ouch' and put her left front paw on my hand, and I started looking between her paws and found a foxtail," Devine recalled. An invasive grass, foxtails are razor-sharp and can burrow into a dog's paw, causing infection."Who knows what's actually going on here, but I think if it's possible for our animals to tell us when and where they are in pain. It could revolutionize veterinary science," said Devine. Devine is now beta testing the FluentPet soundboard, a hexagonal tile grid created specifically for animals. The company combined ideas from speech-language pathology and cognitive science to develop intuitive arrangements designed to help owners and pets remember word locations. Everything Bunny says is recorded on video and sent to researchers studying how dogs understand words. The company is working with the Comparative Cognition Lab at UC San Diego, which studies the cognitive behavior and abilities of children, adults, and a variety of non-human animals."Does it matter if they start as a puppy or if they start later in life? Does it matter what breed they are? Does it matter what gender they are?" wondered Devine. They'll also be looking at processing time. Devine says their small group of beta testers is learning responses can take anywhere from 10 to 40 seconds. Bunny is now talking to people around the world. On TikTok, @what_about_bunny has amassed over 3 million followers and nearly 300,000 on Instagram. Thousands have ordered sound buttons through Amazon or FluentPet to teach their dogs, and cats, how to talk. One talkative feline, @billispeaks, is capturing the hearts of thousands on social media. She's often spotted pressing her favorite word, "mad." "I think what I would like the takeaway for everyone to be is--not 'Oh my god, our dogs can talk' but 'Oh my god, our dogs have been saying these things all along and we haven't been listening,'" said Devine.Devine says she remains skeptical. While Bunny's words make sense some days, they don't on others. She hopes they'll learn more as new dogs are studied."It's too early, but I'm really excited to see what comes out of it," she said.Either way, she says it's been an incredible tool to bond with Bunny. For those unsure where to start, FluentPet created a community-built guide with tips and tricks, do's and don'ts, and how-tos for modeling the most common first concepts. 4002

Google is releasing an updated version of its high-end Pixel phone packed with new camera tricks, a Chrome OS tablet and its first smart-screen device with Google Assistant.Put another way: Google is taking on the iPhone, the Surface Pro and the Echo Show. The company announced on Tuesday the new Pixel 3, Pixel Slate and Google Home Hub. All three are additions to its "Made for Google" lineup and were announced at a press event in New York City. The trio represent the latest update from Google's two-and-a-half-year-old hardware division, which is finally building a single, cohesive Google device brand."We've realized that if we wanted to push the envelope on innovation, we really needed to have a focused hardware effort," Rick Osterloh, Google's SVP of hardware, told CNN Business during an early look at the new products. "That meant combining the very best of Google's technology — our AI, our software and all of the hardware that we're building — to create a great user experience."The launch of a device with an always-on microphone and a camera comes at a critical time for the company. On Monday, Google acknowledged a previously undisclosed vulnerability that had to potential to expose Google+ accounts, but no evidence of a breach was found. 1267

General Electric was blasted on Wednesday by workers, retirees and shareholders bemoaning the downfall of the company they love.At its annual meeting, GE got an earful from employees and investors who pleaded with management to right the ship after a disastrous year."I believe it was arrogance and a series of bad business decisions," former employee Bill Freeda said. "Our board of directors clearly has been AWOL."Another shareholder said: "GE, which was once one of the preeminent companies in the world — the bluest of blue chips — is now an embarrassment."The past 12 months has been one of the darkest periods in GE's 126-year history. A cash crisis, brought on by years of bad deal-making, forced GE to cut its dividend in half and lay off thousands of workers. GE's stock price has crashed by 50%, and calls to kick it out of the Dow have grown louder.Despite the deep criticism of past and current GE leaders, the company's nominees to the board were all elected on Wednesday. None of the shareholder proposals calling for reform were adopted, though one pushing for splitting the CEO and chairman roles received strong support.John Flannery, a veteran GE executive who replaced longtime chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt last year, said he remains "extremely proud" of the company despite its "immensely disappointing" results."We're keenly aware of the pain that our performance has caused," he said.Flannery urged investors and employees to keep the faith and said results from the start of 2018 offer hope."I want all of you to be proud of the company and not lose heart," he said. "I assure you we will not let up until this job is complete."Former GE workers slammed the company for eliminating their supplemental health insurance plans."We built the company. We put it where it is today," said Ron Flowers, president of the Retiree Association of General Electric."Don't just think financially," Flowers urged the board. "Think morally also."Other retirees lamented GE's billion pension deficit, the largest among S&P 500 companies. They questioned whether the pension fund, whittled by years of low rates and inattention, will be around to support them.Flannery said the pension fund is running a "significant deficit," but he said maintaining its integrity is "a deep priority for us." He noted GE recently announced plans to contribute billion to the fund.Freeda, a GE retiree, slammed Immelt for having a back-up jet fly around the world with him on some trips. (GE has said it stopped that practice in 2014. Immelt told the board last year in a letter that he "did not have time to personally direct" the day-to-day operations of GE's corporate air team. He said use of the spare plane was halted once he became aware of it.)"Shareowners should wonder: Were there other serious business abuses?" Freeda said. He called for an independent investigation into questionable business practices under Immelt and urged GE to consider clawing back the former CEO's bonuses.Flannery said that the GE board would take "appropriate steps" if "evidence of serious misconduct" were to emerge. A spokesperson for Immelt declined to comment.GE shareholders voiced stronger support for a proposal aimed at boosting oversight by splitting the CEO and chairman roles. About 41% of shares were cast in favor of the bid, up from 24% last year.In light of accounting concerns at GE, shareholder support for KPMG as the company's auditor dropped sharply. Just 65% of shares were cast in favor of ratifying KPMG, down from 94% last year. KPMG has been inspecting GE's books for 109 years, leading critics to argue they've become too cozy.Martin Harangozo said he was fired by GE with no severance after raising questions about "bad" accounting."GE transitioned from an honest company to a dishonest company," Harangozo said.Underscoring the challenges facing GE, Moody's lowered its credit outlook on the conglomerate to negative on Wednesday because of the expected costs of a Justice Department investigation into its subprime-mortgages business.Moody's warned it could downgrade GE's credit rating if the company fails to improve cash flow significantly or if revenue keeps shrinking at the beleaguered power division. GE shares dropped nearly 5% on Wednesday, leaving them down 53% over the past year. One retiree pleaded with Flannery to turn around the company — fast."My whole life has been GE," he said. "Give it all you've got. We're with you." 4465

HOOVER, Alabama — One week after Alabama police said they killed a mall shooting suspect -- then said he probably wasn't the shooter -- authorities say they've arrested the real assailant.Erron Brown, 20, was arrested Thursday at a relative's home in South Fulton, Georgia, US Marshals supervisor Frank Lempka said.Brown faces one count of attempted murder for the Thanksgiving night shooting at Riverchase Galleria Mall, an upscale shopping center in the Birmingham suburb of Hoover.Moments after the shooting, a Hoover police officer working security at the mall shot and killed a different man -- Emantic Bradford Jr. And over the past week, Hoover police kept changing their story about why he was shot.First, Hoover police said a 21-year-old suspect -- later identified as Bradford -- shot and wounded an 18-year-old man and a 12-year-old innocent bystander. Then police said Bradford probably didn't pull the trigger, but he did brandish a gun. Then they said Bradford had a gun in his hand, but didn't say that he was threatening anyone with it. (The Bradford family's attorney said the young man had a legal permit to carry a weapon.)All this has led to growing accusations of racial profiling and demands for answers. But the case has been turned over to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), which said Wednesday that it will "not release information concerning pending criminal investigations."On Thursday, Hoover city officials held a news conference asking ALEA to release "limited information" on the case to the public. Council member Derrick Murphy noted that protesters had been demonstrating this week outside the mayor's home.City officials did not say what "limited information" they wanted the state to publicize. But Murphy said the city is asking the state to release that information by noon Monday."We have also discussed a follow-up plan in the event that we don't receive the information by Monday at noon," Murphy said. In that case, Murphy said, Hoover Police Chief Nicholas Derzis will decide "whether or not to release limited information on his own."When asked why city officials wouldn't take questions at Thursday's news conference, City Administrator Allan Rice says they wanted to wait until Bradford's funeral Saturday before releasing any information related to the investigation.Rice says he doesn't know what type of limited information might be released Monday. The Hoover officer who was working as security at the mall when he killed Bradford is on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.Meanwhile, the 18-year-old shooting victim, Brian Wilson, and the 12-year-old girl who was hit by a stray bullet are recovering from their injuries.Wilson's attorney, John C. Robbins, issued a statement offering condolences to the Bradford family -- and calling for more dialogue about police shooting deaths of black men."The Wilson family hopes that this tragic event will lead to real, open and honest dialogue not only between the African-American community and the police, but also the entire community must be involved in this discussion," Robbins wrote."Reckless police shootings of young black men must stop. But they will not end until there is rational and productive communication between the entire community and the police force, whose duty it is to protect that community."The-CNN-Wire 3364
