INDIANAPOLIS — A boy was hit by a car Monday afternoon on the west side of Indianapolis after somehow leaving his Indianapolis Public School. Now, the boy's parents want answers. "They failed me and my child, severely. My son could've been killed," Pearl Barnett, parent of IPS student who was hit by a car, said. "This is a mother's worst nightmare."First-grader, Frank Barnett, who has autism, has been through a lot the past 48 hours."I'd like to see justice for my son. I really would," Pearl said. "Because, unfortunately, he's nonverbal. He can't speak for himself."According to Frank's Individualized Education Program through Stephen Foster School 67, he is never to be left alone. The 7-year-old's mother wants to know how he was able to leave the west side school, somehow wander to a family friend's home nearby, and get hit by a car. "I got in the ambulance, and he had a gauge here where his skull was actually showing. And a busted chin," Pearl said. "I mean he was just covered in blood."Later — a concussion, nearly 50 stitches, and bruising head-to-toe — Frank had to spend the night in the hospital and is now recovering. His mother feels the school screwed up, letting him escape and didn't react quick enough to protect him.All of this happened during dismissal when students are trying to exit the school building — a time when Frank should have been riding home on the bus."He gets curb to curb service due to the autism. And when he gets in one of those moods, depending on what happened at that time of the incident, he runs," Pearl informed. "And they're all aware of this. It's stated in his IEP which I do have that he should never be left unattended. He's always got to be with another adult which he was not."IPS would not speak on camera about this — saying he broke away from a staff member and ran out of the building. School administrators immediately called IPS Police as they searched for him. The school says they followed all of the proper protocols, but would not share what those protocols were. It’s a call you hope your child never has to make, but one day they may have to. Can your child make a 911 call on a smartphone?WTMJ television station in Wisconsin asked parents in the Milwaukee area that very question.“She can go on Netflix and YouTube. Not to call 911, but she knows other things, so that would be something that I could look into doing,” said Mareza Landeros, who has a 2-year-old daughter.“I think kids should know that. I’m not sure if his age would be right because he might just call it just because,” said another mother of a toddler, Jaimie Hull.Kinnyetta Patterson with Milwaukee County’s Office of Emergency Management shows us how simple it is to make an emergency call on a smartphone. You don’t have to know a phone’s passcode.Demonstrating with an iPhone first, Patterson pressed the home button twice. At the bottom left of the screen, the word, “Emergency” pops up. Hit that, she said, and hit it once again to make a call to 911. She showed us with an Android, and for that you need to swipe the screen.Once patched through to the call center, Patterson explained technology only helps pinpoint a broad area. Dispatchers need your address, something parents need to teach their kids.“If you ever have to call 911, it's okay, talk to them, give them your address, give them your name,” said Patterson.Do you think there's a good age where you should be teaching children how to call 911?” Consumer Investigator Kristin Byrne asked Patterson.“I think it all depends on the child. We started with my daughter at two. Some people think two is too young but a 2-year-old can make a phone call,” Patterson said. 1653

It is a truth universally acknowledged that middle seats on airplanes are the worst.Being awkwardly sandwiched in between two people while fighting for elbow room is the bane of most passengers. Now a new design might actually make people want the middle seat -- or at least make the 296

It was a chilly winter night in Greenville, South Carolina and Emerson and Maya were on Girl Scout duty selling cookies outside a store. At one point, a man approached the stand and bought seven boxes of cookies worth , and told them to keep the change, according to cookie manager Kayla Dillard. Then, he went back to the table and said: "Pack up all of your cookies. I'm taking them all so y'all can get out of this cold," Dillard said in a Facebook post. He spent 0 on cookies, she said."What an amazing soul. It was about 34 degrees outside that night and we were there for about two hours already before he came," Dillard told CNN."We all were shocked. The girls were very excited and thankful."Dillard said she does not know the good Samaritan. But his act of kindness surely earned him a place in the girls' hearts for a long time. 854

Justin Bieber says that he has been battling Lyme disease. In an Instagram post on Wednesday, the pop star wrote that it's been a rough couple of years but he's been getting the right treatment. Bieber's post promised that he'll “be back and better than ever.” Lyme disease is transmitted by Ixodes ticks, also known as deer ticks. Lyme can cause flu-like conditions, neurological problems, joint paint and other symptoms, but is curable in most cases. Bieber says he will discuss battling the tick-borne infection on his upcoming YouTube docu-series, “Justin Bieber: Seasons,” which debuts on Jan. 27. 615
