SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Tuesday were searching for a man suspected of robbing a taco restaurant in the Mountain View area at gunpoint.It happened shortly before 8:50 p.m. Monday at an eatery on Ocean View Boulevard between South 36th and South 37th streets, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The thief walked up to the counter, pointed a black handgun at the clerk and demanded money from the register, Buttle said.The clerk complied. The gunman fled out the back door and continued running northbound on South 37th Street with an undisclosed amount of cash, he said.No injuries were reported.The bandit was described as a 5-foot-4 Hispanic man in his 20s with a thin build. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Plans to replace an aging terminal at San Diego International Airport cleared a hurdle Thursday, with the Airport Authority Board's unanimous approval of the Environmental Impact Report for its major redevelopment plan.The new Terminal 1 would replace the current 53-year-old terminal, and offer 11 additional gates and upgraded amenities for passengers, including new restaurants, seating, shops and additional security checkpoints.Officials are hoping to break ground on the terminal sometime next year, with the first phase of gates anticipated to open in 2024.RELATED: Travel website ranks San Diego International as best airport in the US"Today, we took an important vote that will help ensure our airport can accommodate expected passenger growth well into the future and ensure our customers and their families are treated to a better airport experience than today's Terminal 1 can provide," said April Bolind, Airport Authority Board Chairman. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate dipped slightly to 3.2 percent in November, with nonfarm industries adding nearly 10,000 jobs, the California Employment Development Department announced Friday. The November unemployment rate is down from a revised 3.3 percent in October and even further below the 3.5 percent rate in November 2017. Total nonfarm employment increased by 9,800 jobs from October to November while total farm employment lost 300 jobs. Nonfarm employment now totals 1,503,800 in San Diego County and farm jobs total 8,500. The trade, transportation and utilities industry added 5,900 jobs month-over-month, the most of any industry in the county. Government was the county's only other industry to add more than 800 jobs, increasing by 2,900. According to EDD data, 1,300 of the government jobs added were in the state and local education sub-industries. The leisure and hospitality industry continued to lose jobs as 2018 recedes further away from the summer months. The industry lost the most jobs of any in the county from October to November at 1,300. Year-over-year data showed an employment increase of 26,400, all nonfarm jobs, from November 2017 to November 2018. A majority of those gains, 16,500 jobs, came in the professional and business services industry. Year-over-year farm employment stayed steady at 8,500 jobs. California's unadjusted unemployment rate dipped from 4.1 percent in October to 3.9 percent in November, according to the EDD. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State University reported 23 new student cases of COVID-19 Sunday, bringing the total number of cases to 621 since the fall semester began Aug. 24.University officials said they were aware of 617 confirmed cases among students and four probable cases.The university has not received any reports of faculty or staff who have tested positive since fall instruction began, SDSU health officials said.The majority of the 621 cases are students living off-campus in San Diego. About 75% of students testing positive live in off-campus housing not managed by the university, with 73% of the cases among the freshman and sophomore classes, officials said.The university said the information is based on cases reported to Student Health Services by an individual or by a public health official."As more private labs administering tests, a possibility exists that not all cases are being reported to Student Health Services," according to the SDSU COVID-19 website.
