While negotiations continue in Congress to reach a deal to avert a partial government shutdown, there is virtually no chance a vote will happen Friday night -- all but assuring there will be a government shutdown at midnight. The House has adjourned, and Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn says there will be no vote Friday night in the Senate.Barring any very unexpected change, the third government shutdown of the year will happen.Vice President Mike Pence, budget director Mick Mulvaney and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, were on Capitol Hill on Friday afternoon meeting with senators, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, about finding a solution. The President has repeatedly said he is unwilling to accept anything less than billion for his long-promised border wall. But the fact that the billion border wall is viewed as a measure that would be impossible to pass in the Senate indicates that votes aren't there on the Hill to meet the President's demand.Funding for roughly a quarter of the federal government expires at midnight, including appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and other parts of the government. 1266

While restaurants in some states start to open their doors to dine-in customers, bars and nightclubs are still closed in most places. Now, those businesses are getting creative when it comes to connecting with customers."My bar manager called me in the middle of the week saying she just saw a club in L.A. doing a DJ livestream and she said we should do that, too, to keep our customers well connected," said Chris Dauria, owner of Johnny's Hideaway in Atlanta, Georgia. Before COVID-19, Johnny's Hideaway would see up to 700 customers on a Saturday night. Their first virtual DJ livestream several weeks ago drew just as many viewers."It was really cool that 700 people were sitting in their living room or wherever, in their pajamas dancing around to the junk we play every night. That’s pretty cool," said Dauria.Johnny's Hideaway isn't alone. Nightclubs across the country are holding music livestream events, reaching out to their customers on social media and encouraging them to tune in. Stereo Nightclub in Chicago has been livestreaming DJ sessions with more than 33,000 people watching. Marquee nightclub in New York is doing the same."He's in the DJ booth by himself with one of my other DJs taking requests and doing the social media thing like 20 feet away from him. It’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen," said Dauria. Dauria plans on holding live DJ sessions every weekend until they open their physical doors to dancing customers. "It's been really tough because I have a restaurant license, but we’re primarily known as a dance club. I get hit at least two to three times a day on social media with 'Hey, when are you going to open, don’t worry about COVID, we'll be safe when we dance,' just crazy requests," said Dauria. He says the livestreams are the only way they've been able to connect with roughly 90% of their customers. They have a restaurant in the club, as well, that has opened to diners, but most of their business comes from dancers on the weekends. "I think the one thing I’ve learned from this is, there are a ton of people out there who feel that it's their home away from home. They go there and dance and have a release and I think it’s important so at least by us just doing this four hours a week, there’s a Hideaway out there that’s coming back soon. Whenever it happens, it happens," said Dauria. These clubs are giving customers some happiness and music to dance to even if it's from the couch on Saturday nights. 2470

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act into law -- a move sure to be hailed by the territory's pro-democracy protesters, who have been calling for the law since the summer. The US has long maintained a special trading relationship with Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous territory where mass protests have erupted continuously since June over perceived infringement on its autonomy by Beijing, among a host of other issues. The new law will require the US to annually confirm that Hong Kong's special freedoms are being maintained by Beijing -- failure to do so could result in Washington withdrawing the city's special status, a massive blow to the Hong Kong economy. The bill also lays out a process for the President to impose sanctions and travel restrictions on those who are found to be knowingly responsible for arbitrary detention, torture and forced confession of any individual in Hong Kong, or other violations of internationally recognized human rights in the Asian financial hub. However, the US President's statement also indicated the administration would only enforce parts of the measure -- as it interferes with the President's ability to conduct foreign policy."Certain provisions of the Act would interfere with the exercise of the President's constitutional authority to state the foreign policy of the United States. My Administration will treat each of the provisions of the Act consistently with the President's constitutional authorities with respect to foreign relations," the White House said in a statement. In a personal signing statement, Trump added that he had signed the bills "out of respect for President Xi, China, and the people of Hong Kong."They are being enacted in the hope that Leaders and Representatives of China and Hong Kong will be able to amicably settle their differences leading to long term peace and prosperity for all."The Chinese government last week criticized the measure as one that "neglects facts and truth" and "blatantly interferes in Hong Kong affairs and China's other internal affairs."In a statement released by China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs last week, spokesperson Geng Shuang said "China will have to take strong countermeasures to defend our national sovereignty, security and development interests if the US insists on making the wrong decisions."The state-owned People's Daily also described the bill as "a piece of waste paper," and a "serious provocation against the entire Chinese people" in an editorial published Thursday.Trump's announcement comes at a delicate time for US-China relations, as trade negotiators appeared to be edging closer to a trade deal between the US and China. On Tuesday, Chinese Vice Premier Liu He and his US counterparts, Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, spoke on the phone to discuss trade negotiations, according to China's Ministry of Commerce."Both sides discussed each other's core concerns and reached a consensus on how to resolve these issues. Both sides agreed to maintain communication on the remaining matters in (trade) talks regarding a phase one agreement", the Commerce Ministry statement read. 3213

When Jill Lorentz was in her 20s, she said her mother started showing signs of forgetfulness. “As we got a little bit older, she started having mild memory loss and we didn’t think anything of it really," she recalled. "We just thought it comes with age.” However, she later learned her mother had Alzheimer’s Disease, a form of dementia.“She would ask you the same question that you had just answered,” Lorentz explained.Dementia causes a decline in memory, language, and problem solving.“The disease takes them in a place in the progression where they start losing the ability to go A to Z on any action,” Lorentz said. Lorentz saw this happen to her mom over the years, and eventually, to other members of her family, too. “We have had eight people in our family with some type of dementia,” she said.Every 65 seconds, someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer’s Disease. Nearly six million people in the U.S. over the age of 65 are living with it, according to 2020 stats from the Alzheimer’s Association. “A lot of the focus is on today, what do we do now that we don’t have a cure and every little in the way of a treatment,” Amelia Schafer, the executive director of Alzheimer’s Association Colorado Chapter, said. “We now have more people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia than ever in our country and when we look at the trajectory we know it’s not slowing down.”One of the biggest risk factors is age.“Age is the number one risk factor so as we are aging as a population here in the U.S. it’s possible we’re more at risk,” said JJ Jordan, the Community Chair for Dementia Friendly Denver, a nonprofit that educates communities about dementia. As more people enter the later years of their life, with more awareness and more knowledge of the warning signs, different types of dementia are able to be diagnosed easier today than before.“I get about 90, 95 percent of my diagnosis from talking to them, getting to know them,” Dr. Samantha Holden, a behavioral neurologist with University of Colorado Health, said. “Even though we can’t cure these things, we can definitely manage them and make sure we’re improving people’s quality of life.”That’s where caregivers like Lorentz play an important role in the life of someone who has been diagnosed. After learning lessons taking car of her mom, she is now a caregiver to her sister, Judy, who also has dementia and lives in another state.“The one thing that I’ve done with my sister is having really open and honest conversations with her and having a safe place for her to come,” Lorentz said. 2561
