The researchers said they chose fruit flies because their cellular and developmental mechanisms are similar to humans.The researchers said that flies exposed to blue LED light sustained damage to their retinal cells and brain neurons and had impaired locomotion. Even more stunning, some of the flies, which exhibited some brain damage, were mutants that did not develop eyes."The fact that the light was accelerating aging in the flies was very surprising to us at first,” said Jaga Giebultowicz, a professor of integrative biology at Oregon State. “We’d measured expression of some genes in old flies, and found that stress-response, protective genes were expressed if flies were kept in light. "We hypothesized that light was regulating those genes. Then we started asking, 'what is it in the light that is harmful to them,' and we looked at the spectrum of light. It was very clear cut that although light without blue slightly shortened their lifespan, just blue light alone shortened their lifespan very dramatically.” 1708

California's largest public utility provider could face murder or manslaughter charges if it were found responsible for causing the state's recent deadly wildfires, according to court documents filed by the state attorney general.Pacific Gas & Electric Co., or PG&E, could potentially face a range of criminal offenses if any of the wildfires broke out as a result of the utility failing to properly operate and maintain power lines, per an amicus brief filed in US District Court Friday by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra.PG&E, which provides electricity to about 16 million Californians, has been under scrutiny for how it maintains its infrastructure amid questions about what caused the Camp Fire -- the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in the state's history.According to the brief, potential charges range from minor misdemeanors related to clearing vegetation around power lines up to "homicide offenses like implied-malice murder and involuntary manslaughter."The attorney general's office has not come to a conclusion about PG&E's responsibility for the recent fires and is not taking a position on the issue, the brief states.The brief was filed in response to a request by US District Court Judge William Alsup that officials explain what crimes PG&E might potentially have committed if it were ultimately found responsible for the wildfires.In response to Becerra's court filing, PG&E said it is determined to doing everything it can to reduce wildfire risks."PG&E's most important responsibility is public and workforce safety. Bakersfield City Council heard from Pastor Angelo Frazier and several others on a proposal to add the nation's motto "In God We Trust" on Bakersfield Police cars. Some residents consider the proposal an infringement on the first amendment of separation between church and state. City Councelmember Jacquie Sullivan says the proposal will be in the June agenda. Bakersfield Police patrol vehicles may soon have new decals if a proposal by a local pastor moves forward. Pastor Angelo Frazier of the Riverlakes Community Church, says he will be giving a presentation at Wednesday's City Council meeting proposing that Bakersfield add the nation's motto "In God We Trust" on their patrol cars. He says the proposal is not currently on the agenda, but hopes the council will pick up the plan and approve it. Pastor Frazier says he has been working with City Councilwoman Jacquie Sullivan for several years to incorporate the motto into public places. BALTIMORE — The Frederick County State's Attorney's Office in Maryland indicted a man who knowingly transmitted HIV to several women he met on dating sites.According to officials, the Frederick County Police Department started an investigation in 2017 on 34-year-old Rudolph Jericho Smith after different women told authorities that they believed Smith had infected them with HIV.During the department's investigation, officials were able to conduct witness interviews which informed them that Smith knew of his HIV-positive status since 2014. A search warrant for Smith's blood was executed and a detective confirmed his positive status. The department was later notified that Smith continued to meet women on dating sites and had unprotected sex with them without telling them about his status.Smith has been charged with first degree assault, reckless endangerment and knowing transfer of HIV.The Frederick Police Department is asking anyone who may have had a sexual relationship with Smith around or after July 2017 to leave contact information on the 1069
