BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai Pudong Development (SPD) Bank said its first-half-year net profit rose 33.92 percent from one year earlier due largely to lending boom and increased commission fees.Net profits climbed to 9.08 billion yuan (1.34 billion U.S. dollars) in the first six months of this year, the Shanghai-based lender said in a statement filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange late Sunday. Its growth in profits stemmed from rising operating revenues, a result of growing net interest earnings, increased fee incomes and the improved quality of assets, according to the statement.Earnings per share stood at 0.791 yuan, up 20.21 percent from one year earlier. Also, operating revenues grew 36.42 percent to 22.75 billion yuan in the first half of 2010, it said.Total assets for the commercial bank hit 1.781 trillion yuan by the end of June, up 9.77 percent from the end of 2009.

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) - China's top economic planning agency Thursday urged authorities nationwide to step up supervision to stabilize prices in food, transportation and tourism during the upcoming holidays.Focus should be attached to cracking down on price rigging, including circulating misleading or false information about price hikes, commodity hoarding or forcing up prices of grain, cooking oil, meat, eggs and dairy products, said an official from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).The official also asked involved departments to ramp up measures to regulate prices of public transportation and in the tourism industries, while curbing arbitrary price hikes and irregular charges.Complaints and reports from the public will be accepted at hotline phone number "12358", said the official. This year's Mid-autumn Festival holiday is Sept. 22 to 24, and the National Day holiday lasts from Oct. 1 to 7.

BEIJING, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese trawler captain Zhan Qixiong arrived safely in Fuzhou, capital of southeast China's Fujian Province early Saturday morning by a chartered plane after he was illegally detained by Japan.Crowds gathered at the captain's home in Gangfu Village, Jinjiang City of Fujian Province while the his wife and son left for Fuzhou, the provincial capital for family reunion."I was so happy when I was told that my brother would soon return," said Zhan Yuehong, a sister of the captain. "After all these sleepless nights, I can finally have a good rest now."The sister said she is preparing a bowl of noodles with eggs for her brother, a local tradition to keep off bad spirits when a family member returns from an ordeal.Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement after the captain's return that the Chinese government expressed "strong protest" against Japan, whose detention, investigation or any form of judiciary measures for the Chinese trawler and fishermen are unlawful and invalid.China asked the Japanese side to make apology and compensation for the incident, the statement said. It also said the two sides should resolve the problems of Sino-Japanese relationship through dialogue and consultation. On Sept. 7, two Japan Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler collided in waters off China's Diaoyu Islands. On the following day, the Japan Coast Guard illegally seized the Chinese trawler and detained the trawler's captain and 14 fishermen on board, drawing strong protests from the Chinese government and people. The Japanese side freed the 14 fishermen and the boat on Sept. 15, but continued to hold the captain. A Japanese court announced on Sept. 19 the trawler captain's detention would be extended by another 10 days.China has repeatedly urged Japan to unconditionally release the Chinese captain to avoid further damaging bilateral ties, warning "strong counter measures" if Japan failed to do so.China has already halted bilateral exchanges at and above the provincial and ministerial levels. It has also suspended contact with Japan on the issue of expanding aviation rights between the two countries."The Japanese side bears full responsibility for the current situation, and it shall bear all the consequences that arise," Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said when meeting with Chinese nationals and Chinese Americans in the United States. In the mean time, the number of Chinese citizens traveling to Japan as tourists has already declined. Many Chinese citizens and businesses have recently canceled their planned trips to Japan.Observers of Sino-Japanese relations said the prolonged detention of a Chinese trawler captain "severely harms" Chinese people's trust in Japan and undermines the "sound interactions" the two countries have achieved in recent years.Since the collision happened on Sept. 7, "Diaoyu Islands" and "Zhan Qixiong" have become the most searched terms in China's Internet community. Also, Internet bulletin boards on several major Chinese news portals have been overwhelmed with messages call for Japan to immediately and unconditionally release Zhan. The messages said that the Diaoyu Islands have always been an integral part of China and it's within the rights of Chinese fishermen to fish in the waters around the islands. The Diaoyu Islands have been Chinese territory since the early years of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Maps printed in Japan in 1783 and 1785 that marked out the boundary of the Ryukyu Kingdom show that the Diaoyu Islands belong to China.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's growth is projected to average 10.5 percent in 2010 and 9.6 percent in 2011, driven by domestic demand, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a report Wednesday. The Washington-based international lending agency made the projection for the annual fall meetings this weekend of the 187-nation IMF and its sister lending organization, the World Bank."The slight moderation in recent activity is expected to continue through 2011 in light of tighter quantitative limits on credit growth, measures to cool off the property market and limit bank exposure to this, and the planned unwinding of fiscal stimulus in 2011," the IMF said in its report. The report said this year's sustained growth in retail sales and industrial production confirms that private sector activity has advanced beyond the lift from government stimulus."On average over 2010-11, private domestic demand is poised to contribute two-thirds of near term growth, and government activity about one third, whereas the contribution from net exports will be close to zero," the report said.Despite the robustness in domestic demand, the pickup in inflation in 2010 reflected mainly higher food prices rather than core inflation, the report said. The report said China's increasingly wide trading network is driving growth in numerous economies, especially commodity exporters. The report said Asia's medium-term growth depends on the rebalancing of drivers of growth -- greater reliance should be put on domestic markets instead of foreign demand. The report said such a rebalancing in China, the world's second largest economy, is critical to enhance the role of household consumption in domestic growth. The report also recommended that China implement reforms to health care, education, and pension systems to enhance the social safety net.

URUMQI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) - China will upgrade an annual trade fair held in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to a leading trade platform in the heart of Eurasia and to boost cross-border economic cooperation in a region vulnerable to unrest and violence. The China Urumqi Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Fair, which closed here Sunday, will be re-launched as China-Eurasia Expo beginning next year, government organizers said, and it will become an important exchange platform for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which includes China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan."The upgrading is overall and comprehensive," said China's Minister of Commerce Chen Deming, who heads the China-Eurasia Expo Organizing Committee. He said the Expo will serve as China's platform to reach out to the entire Asia and Europe rather than just central and south Asia.People visit the 19th Urumqi Trade Fair in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Sept. 4, 2010. The five-day annual trade fair closed on Sunday. The Chinese government has decided to upgrade the Urumqi Trade Fair to the China-Aisa-Europe expo since 2011.Though details of the expo is not yet clear, organizers and observers said it might include talks to ink trade pacts between regional economies and will cover diplomatic and cultural issues as well.Foreign trade contracts signed at this year's fair totals 3.613 billion U.S. dollars, organizers said, while project contracts --including domestic deals--reached 126 billion yuan and cover a broad field of mining, crude oil processing, construction and tourism, among others.Xinjiang, which has a large proportion of ethnic Uygurs in its population and lies at China's far west bordering Central Asian states, including Pakistan and Afghanistan, is a region vulnerable to unrest and terrorist threats. In July 2009, 197 people were killed while 1,700 were injured in the country' s worst riots in decades in Urumqi. Authorities blamed separatists and extremists for inciting the violence. In the wake of the riot, the central government also ramped up development drives in this remote and largely underdeveloped region, aiming to root out the seeds of unrest. But the air of the city remains tense and security measures were re-enforced over the past five days during the fair. No violence or security issues were reported.Zhang Chunxian, the top official in Xinjiang, said holding the China-Eurasia Expo would help remake Xinjiang as a key region for China' s opening-up to its western neighbors.Ying Qian, an expert on regional cooperation with Manila-based Asian Development Bank, told Xinhua that the central government's policy supports for Xinjiang, such as taxation reform for crude oil and natural gas, and tax exemptions and reductions for enterprises in poverty areas, and increased fixed investment will undoubtedly increase the speed of economic growth and attract more domestic and foreign investments to Xinjiang. He said those fixed investments aimed at enhancing Xinjiang's position as the land bridge to connect rest of China to central Asia and beyond will yield most economic benefits for Xinjiang, as well as for rest of member countries of the ADB-supported Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program. The program, initiated in 1997 to encourage regional cooperation, includes Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, China (focusing on Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The ADB economist said the investments should include key transport links, trade logistics facilities, and most importantly, border crossing points improvements."The CAREC countries need to turn their landlocked status into a land link for Eurasia, and to enable businesses to more readily access regional and global markets," said Ronald Butiong, the ADB economist who heads the CAREC Unit.
