WASHINGTON — The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose last week to 898,000, a historically high number that is evidence that layoffs remain a hindrance to the economy’s recovery from the pandemic recession that erupted seven months ago. Thursday’s report from the Labor Department shows that the job market remains fragile, and it coincides with other recent data that have signaled a slowdown in hiring. The economy is still roughly 10.7 million jobs short of recovering all the 22 million jobs that were lost when the pandemic struck in early spring. 578

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- An Escondido woman accused in a vehicle crash that killed four people, including two children, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to all charges levied against her.Ashley Rene Williams pleaded not guilty to four counts of murder and four counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated during her initial court appearance, which was via video conference.The 28-year-old’s bail was set at million.According to Escondido police, just before 8:30 p.m. on May 5, Williams was driving northbound near Oak Hill Drive and San Pasqual Valley Road when she struck two adults and two children walking in the area.Abel Valdez, 33, and 11-year-old Emmanuel Riva died at the scene. Ten-year-old Yovanny Felix and 50-year-old Carmela Camacho were rushed to the hospital, where they later passed away.The boys were brothers, and Camacho was their grandmother. Valdez was Camacho’s boyfriend, according to a GoFundMe established for the family.Williams was taken to the hospital after also suffering injuries.Following an investigation that involved the analysis of evidence that included cellphone and vehicle computer data, lab test results, and roadway measurements, Williams was arrested at her home on June 4.Prosecutors said Williams was under the influence of drugs and using her cellphone at the time of the collision.10News learned Williams’ driver’s license was already suspended as of Feb. 18, 2020, due to a drug-related offense. DMV records showed she was also involved in a non-alcohol related crash on Dec. 16, 2019.San Diego County Deputy District Attorney Laurie Hauf said, “We believe she is a danger to the community, to the safety of the public, having been advised the last time that driving while intoxicated could kill somebody and she did it anyway.”A readiness hearing for Williams is set for July 7, with a preliminary hearing scheduled in the case for Aug. 20. 1909

A decision on those events will be made later.Disney hopes to open the Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom parks on July 11, followed by Hollywood Studios and Epcot on July 15, but with new safety guidelines and limited crowds.The theme park will require employees and guests to wear masks and get temperature checks at park entrances.In order to keep capacity down, guests will need to make a reservation for park entry in advance. (KGTV)—  Hundreds of volunteers and voters attended the “Moms Demand Action” Rally in Vista.They gathered, rallied, and went door to door, advocating for what they call, “common sense gun legislation.” They featured a special guest speaker, Fred Guttenberg, who lost his daughter to an active shooter in Parkland, Florida this February. With only two days left until the deadline of voter registration, volunteers are ramping up their last-minute pushes. 10News followed a few volunteers on their door knocking routes in Vista. They said every step they took was to garner every vote for their cause. “We need to vote like our lives depend on it, because they do,” Wendy Wheatcroft, California Chapter Leader of “Moms Demand Action,” said. It’s something Fred Guttenberg knows all too well. “My daughter was… my life… she’s gone,” he said. His daughter, Jaime Guttenberg, was 14 years old when she was killed at Stoneman Douglas High School. “When you live through what we’ve lived through, it ain’t easy,” Guttenberg said.Guttenberg said since his daughter’s death in February, his life mission has changed. It is now to get people around the country to the polls, and advocate for what he calls “common sense gun legislation.”“I support the 2nd Amendment,” Gutenberg said. “My father-in-law owns guns. I have no problem with legal gun owners. It is an effort to keep weapons out of the hands who intend to kill others.”That is the message he hopes will resonate with voters across the aisle.“I am here today for one reason.
