BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- On the last trading day of 2010, the Chinese currency, the yuan, strengthened to a record high for a second consecutive day, at 6.6227 per U.S. dollar, after 11 consecutive days of gains.The central parity rate of the currency, also known as the renminbi (RMB), was set two basis points stronger than Thursday's 6.6229, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trading system.China's central bank announced on June 19 it would further reform the formation mechanism of the yuan exchange rate to improve its flexibility.

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday urged Israel and Palestine to stay on the path of peace talks and take constructive moves to advance their stalled peace talks.Wen made the appeal in a message to the Conference in Commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which was held Monday at the United Nations headquarters in New York.Offering warm congratulations for the event on behalf of the Chinese government, Wen stressed that the Palestinian issue is at the core of the Middle East issue.The Chinese government has all along firmly supported the Palestinian people's just cause of restoring their legitimate national rights, and the efforts to continuously push the Middle East peace process forward, Wen said.The talks between Israel and Palestine have now reached a pivotal stage, he said, voicing the hope that both sides will stay on the track,take positive and constructive efforts, avoid any disturbance of the talks, cooperate with international mediation efforts, and constantly promote the negotiation process.He expressed the hope that on the basis of related UN resolutions and the "land-for-peace" principle, an independent Palestinian State with full sovereignty will be established and the peaceful coexistence of Israel and the Palestinian State will be achieved.An early settlement of the Palestinian issue is the expectation shared by all Middle East countries and peoples and the international community, Wen said.As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will as always support the United Nations in playing a vital role on the Middle East issue, he said.He added that China, along with the international community, will continue to make unremitting efforts to seek a just solution to the Palestinian issue and promote peace, stability and development in the Middle East.The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in 1977 designating Nov. 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. BEIJING, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese lawmakers have heard a series of the State Council's reports on the development of ethnic minorities, and regarding the country's health care reform and service industry, at a meeting Wednesday during the bimonthly session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature.The meeting was presided over by Ismail Tiliwaldi, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee.A total of 150 NPC Standing Committee members, including Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, as well as other vice chairpersons of the NPC Standing Committee attended the meeting.Commissioned by the State Council, Yang Jing, minister in charge of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, said in a report to the NPC Standing Committee that the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the central government's supports in policy, planning and funding for the ethnic minority groups and regions had yielded remarkable achievements in the country's economic and social development.In the report, Yang also pledged that the government would continue to step up infrastructure development in ethnic minority regions and spend more on education, medical services and poverty relief.Zhang Ping, director of the National Development and Reform Commission, delivered a report on deepening health care reform at the meeting.The reform had achieved various levels of progress in promotion of medical insurance, grassroots medical services and equal access of health care services for the public, Zhang said.Zhang noted that the government would further expand the coverage of the medical insurance system, intensify supervision over medical service providers and make more progress in the reform of the country's publicly-owned hospitals.Zhang also delivered a report on accelerating the development of the country's secondary industries. HANGZHOU, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun on Tuesday applauded the contributions that Chinese literary writers and authors had made to enriching people's lives and called on them to create more works that are true to life and close to people.Li, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks in a congratulatory letter that was sent to the organizing committee of the fifth Lu Xun Literature Prize, one of China's most prestigious honors.The award ceremony was held in east China's Shaoxing City, the hometown of Lu Xun (1881-1936), one of China's most well-known contemporary authors and essayist, on Tuesday night.Named after Lu, the prize was first awarded in 1986.Writers of outstanding short- to middle-length novels, poems, prose, essays, reportage, literary reviews and theoretical works will receive the award, which is bestowed every two years.
