Like cinnamon apple smells of apple pie and childhood, vanilla. You know many people love the scent of a warm home kitchen or the scent of outdoors and flowers and gardens and grass. As of Monday morning, more than 11 million people in the U.S. are confirmed to have contracted COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, a database kept by Johns Hopkins University.That means about 1 million Americans have been diagnosed with the virus in the last seven days. The U.S. passed the 10 million case threshold on Nov. 9.COVID-19 has been spreading at a frightening pace within the U.S. in the month of November. For the past 13 days, at least 100,000 Americans have been diagnosed with the virus each day, a stretch that includes seven days that set records in the number of new daily cases.The spike in cases has also led to an increase in hospitalizations across the country. According to the COVID Tracking Project, about 70,000 Americans are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 complications, the most since the pandemic began.Several Midwest states like Iowa and South Dakota have reported that their hospitals are near capacity as they fill up with COVID-19 patients.The U.S. has also seen an uptick in deaths linked to the virus in the past month, though according to the COVID Tracking Project, death rates remain below where they were during case spikes in the spring and summer. As we all prepare for a drastically different school year, parents are trying to figure out how to balance their work and virtual learning for their children as many districts across the country announce students will have at least a portion of their instruction at home.Uma Samynathan, owner and director of a Code Ninjas franchise in San Diego, showed her facility that includes a "Game Builders Club.”“We teach them how to build their own world rather than have them play a customized world on a tablet,” Samynathan said.She says her franchise was the first on the west coast. Two years in, she's encouraged and inspired by how fast kids learn.“What I love most is connecting with the kids and getting excited about the way they learn,” Samynathan said. “They are so unique, each one of them. If they (watched) a YouTube channel last night, they can tell me what was so interesting about the channel immediately. They’ll go to the rowlocks camera and start implanting that same thing."They've been doing virtual learning all summer, and they're about to do it a lot more. This time around though, many franchises like Samynathan's are offering parents a helping hand by providing assistance with a student's distance learning and provide some coding fun on the side."We can offer a STEM-based learning where they can learn coding, robotics, and they can do academics, homework,” Samynathan said. “If they’re going to cover a subject at school, we do it prior so they have a better understanding in doing that particular subject.”Some Code Ninja centers, like the one in Los Alamitos, California, sent out a survey to parents. They're taking about hiring an elementary school teacher to help proctor the learning so parents can work and kids can stay on task in their classroom while learning online. Authorities have removed 23 passengers from a Carnival Cruise Line ship in Australia after a series of brawls, New South Wales police and Carnival said in statements.Cellphone video from the ship shows passengers tussling with each other, and with security officers, outside a nightclub and by a swimming pool amid shouting and screams from alarmed onlookers.Carnival said police on Friday removed "a large family group who had been involved in disruptive acts aboard Carnival Legend. Our security team responded in several instances to extremely unruly behavior by these guests. One particular altercation in the nightclub began when the group physically attacked other guests."Police said they were told several men fought in the early morning hours Friday while the ship was about 220 kilometers (137 miles) off Jervis Bay. At 16 years old, Gabe Richards has been working hard to get good grades.He's secured straight As while being a part of the special education program at Marysville High School in Michigan.But, after getting invited to be honored at an academic awards ceremony Monday night, Gabe said he was disappointed to be told at the event that his invite was a mistake."We were really excited and don't get the chance to celebrate achievements all the time," said his mother Stefanie Grassel.Grassel said the faculty did apologize and acknowledge they mistakenly sent an invitation letter.However, as a mother, Grassel said she wants to see the policy changed to become more inclusive."It sends the message that they are less than a general education student, and that's wrong," she added.Richards also told us he feels disappointed after what happened. District superintendent Shawn Whiteman refused to do an interview in response to what happened. Instead, he issued the following statement addressing the matter:"The criteria for students to receive the distinguished “Academic Award” from Marysville High School are a GPA greater than or equal to 3.5 and that they are enrolled in a certain amount of academic-based classes.After speaking with our high school principal, it was evident that a mistake was made when identifying students for this award, due to the fact that a letter was sent home inviting a student to the ceremony who didn’t meet the full criteria.It is clear that the high school made an error in identifying students for this year’s award and we respectfully apologize for any grief this has caused.  Because of this, we will be taking corrective action so that this does not happen again in the future." 1768
