— and suspended.Awtrey, a transgender student, had been looking forward to his breast reduction surgery — known as a "top surgery" — for so long. When it was finally complete earlier this month, he shed tears of joy."I full-on started balling and crying because this was something I wanted the last 10 years of my life," Awtrey said.He was a student at Welch College in Gallatin, Tennessee, who was planning to stay with a Christian couple as he healed from the surgery. But when they found out what it was for, he says they told him he wasn't welcome anymore. After a roommate outed Awtrey last year, he says Welch College officials told him to keep quiet."I wasn't allowed to have an opinion when something was talked about, when others made transphobic jokes or teachers made transphobic jokes. Those things would hurt me but I wasn't allowed to comment on it," Awtrey said. And Awtrey says when the college found out about his surgery, they told him he couldn't return to the dorms, and eventually suspended him for two terms.Welch College is a private university, so it isn't subject to the same laws forbidding discrimination that public universities are."These things are just part of a problem that is now pervading all of society," Awtrey said. "When Welch College kicked me out, they essentially said I did not deserve an education at their college."In a statement, Welch College President Matt Pinson said:"Welch College believes that all persons are created in God’s image and thus have inherent dignity and should be treated with respect, compassion, and love. The College holds that God created humanity in two distinct and complementary sexes: male and female. The College acknowledges that the Fall of humanity into sin has introduced brokenness into God’s good creation, including in the realm of human sexuality. For example, some individuals experience a distressing confusion about their gender identity, perceiving a conflict between their biological reality and their psychological self-understanding.Welch College believes that individuals experiencing such confusion—and the distress that usually accompanies it—should be treated with love and compassion. The College also believes that attempting to alter one’s bodily identity constitutes a rejection of God’s design for humanity. The College is also aware that such attempts all too rarely deliver on their promises to alleviate psychological and emotional suffering. The College thus invites all transgender individuals to trust fully in Christ and experience renewal in the gospel. On Friday, August 2, Welch College learned that one of its students had undergone surgery in an effort to conform her body to her belief that she is male. Given the incompatibility of such an action with the College’s beliefs and expectations for members of its community, the College informed the student that while she could not continue living in a dormitory, the College would provide hotel accommodations and funds for food during her recovery period. The College later offered to provide in-home health care for the student, which the student declined, stating she did not need it. Reports that the College responded inappropriately or unlovingly to the student’s situation are inaccurate.Pinson also said, “Welch’s community standards hold that students are to obey God’s revealed will in Holy Scripture and avoid behaviors that constitute a rejection of the divine design for human sexuality. Our desire is to show individuals experiencing gender confusion the love and compassion of Christ while bearing witness to God’s design as revealed in Holy Scripture for his human creatures as male and female. We believe that a commitment to historic Christian teaching on human gender and sexuality must ever be melded with love, compassion, and sensitivity to people who are made in the image of God. Welch informs all members of its community of these beliefs, on which its decisions regarding admissions, hiring, housing, etc., are based. We will continue to pray for all people experiencing gender confusion while also honoring the values of this institution and its sponsoring denomination, which are shared by the Christian tradition over two millennia.Pinson continued, “Throughout Yanna’s time at Welch, we have treated her [sic] with love, respect, compassion, sensitivity, and privacy, though we always clearly communicated our community standards regarding gender identity. We at Welch love Yanna and have shown her that love in a way that accords with our deeply held religious beliefs.”This story was originally published by 4599

You’ll want to look up at the night sky Monday, because the much-anticipated “Christmas Star” is set to be at its brightest. The “Christmas Star” in a nickname that’s been given to the astronomical event when Jupiter and Saturn will get so close together, they’ll be especially vibrant and visible to the naked eye.During this “Great Conjunction,” the two planets will be the closest they’ve been to each other in nearly 400 years and it’s been about 800 years since the alignment occurred at night, allowing everyone around the world to witness it.Monday night, NASA says Jupiter and Saturn will appear so close that a pinkie finger at arm’s length will easily cover both planets in the sky. Those trying to catch a glimpse of the conjunction are encouraged to look toward the southwest sky just after sunset. NASA says you should find a spot with an unobstructed view of the sky, like a field or park. The planets can be seen with the unaided eye, but if you use binoculars or a telescope, you may be able to see Jupiter’s four large moons.Though from our vantage point, the planets will appear very close together, NASA says they’ll actually remain hundreds of millions of miles apart in space. The conjunction is also happening on the same day as the winter solstice, but the timing is merely a coincidence.“Conjunctions like this could happen on any day of the year, depending on where the planets are in their orbits,” said Henry Throop, astronomer in the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “The date of the conjunction is determined by the positions of Jupiter, Saturn, and the Earth in their paths around the Sun, while the date of the solstice is determined by the tilt of Earth’s axis. The solstice is the longest night of the year, so this rare coincidence will give people a great chance to go outside and see the solar system.” 1874

— one of the first efforts to measure the breadth of the assaults -- found that at least 170 county, city or state government systems have been attacked since 2013, including at least 45 police and sheriff's offices. The firm compiled all known instances of ransomware infections of local government systems, a type of cyberattack that encrypts a computer's files, where the attacker demands payment — usually in bitcoin — for a key to unlock them. The federal government and the FBI do not track the attacks nationwide.22 known attacks this yearThere have been 22 known public-sector attacks so far in 2019, which would outpace 2018, and that does not take into account that attacks often aren't reported until months or years after they're discovered. The latest major city to be hit is Baltimore, which was infected with ransomware Tuesday. It has quarantined its networks and been forced to provide most of its municipal services manually."It's frustrating. It's unfortunate. -- or stand your ground laws -- as part of their defense, since Guyger believed she was in her own apartment. Guyger's actions were reasonable, defense attorneys said, and any ordinary person could have made the same mistake in a similar situation."The law recognizes that mistakes can be made. It's always tragic. The law's not perfect. It's tragic, but you have to follow this law," attorney Toby Shook told the jury.Shook urged jurors to look at the case "calmly" and not decide on emotion, sympathy, or public pressure. "But you have to use the discipline not to do that," he said."That's hard, especially in a case like this," he added. "You'll never see a case like this, that's so tragic. So tragic. It's hard to do as jurors. Who would not have sympathy for Botham Jean? Wonderful human being -- died in these horrible, tragic circumstances. Who would not have sympathy for his family or anyone in that position? Everyone does, but that is not part of your consideration as a jury."Prosecutors argued self-defense is thin legally because Guyger was not in her own home. She acted disproportionately, prosecutors said, and had less lethal options available, like using her stun gun or mace, rather than acting immediately with deadly force."Self-defense is an option of last resort. She killed him unreasonably and unjustifiably," said lead prosecutor Jason Hermus. The self defense argument should apply to Jean, not Guyger, they said. "It's not her apartment. There was not force. It's not occupied. She doesn't need castle doctrine," said Assistant District Attorney Jason Fine. "No. This law is not in place for her, it's in place for Bo."Hermus argued it was "absolutely unreasonable" that Guyger missed numerous signs, including a bright red doormat outside Jean's door, that indicated she was at the wrong apartment.Hermus had the final word in closing arguments, walking right up to Guyger in her seat, pointing at her, looking her in the eye, and forcefully urging the jury to tell Guyger: "You will be held responsible for what you did and whether or not you want to accept responsibility, it will be forced upon you."And by God in Dallas County, Texas," he continued, "there will be a consequence for you walking in and shooting an unarmed, defenseless man." 2276
