As Democrats and Republicans battle over key swing states, some unexpected voting communities could play a significant role in the outcome. With Kamala Harris being the first-ever woman of Jamaican and Indian descent on a major party ticket, the South Asian community is mobilizing like never before.Young, professional, and politically savvy South Asian Americans, like Sabina Bokhari, are beginning to flex their electoral power.“This is a momentous election, as was the last one and so I have definitely upped my political engagement in all the ways that I can,” she said."The Republican Hindu Coalition" and "South Asians for Biden" are two groups driven by very different political ideologies that are presenting potentially strong voting blocks. Dr. Sumit Ganguly, a professor of political science at Indiana University, says they could play a key role in down ballot races.“It's a disproportionately affluent electorate. And it's an electorate that's growing. It could make a huge difference in Senate and House races,” said Ganguly.South Asian Americans have traditionally high voter turnout and have grown to become the second largest immigrant group in the U.S. They also tend to lean democratic.A post-2016 election survey indicates that 90% of Bangladeshi Americans, 88% of Pakistani Americans and 77% of Indian Americans voted for Hilary Clinton.President Trump has made a major play for the Indian vote. Last year, he held a large rally in Texas alongside Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and attracted a crowd of 50,000 Indian Americans. This week, "South Asians for Biden" launched a digital ad campaign series featuring celebrities encouraging South Asians to vote blue.“I know a lot of the aunties and uncles tend to be much more conservative and kind of lean Republican for sure,” said actor Sendhil Ramamurthy. “I think it's up to younger people, younger than myself, to try and change some minds.”Author and filmmaker Gotham Chopra along with his father Deepak, sister and his niece, a first-time voter, put out their own video stumping for Biden and Harris.“We all, three generations, feel very strongly about the stakes of this election and decided to participate in it,” said Chopra.Making inroads at the highest levels of government, Bokhari says means the power of the South Asian vote is being recognized and paving the way for future generations.“Young South Asians and young South Asian women who do want to occupy a role in our government one day it's important to have that representation,” said Bokhari. “So, we know that we can, and to be able to represent our communities to the best of our ability.” 2644

As calls for police reform permeate among supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement, the Fraternal Order of Police announced on Friday it has endorsed Donald Trump for president. The FOP, which is the nation’s largest police union with 355,000 members, endorsed Trump for the second time. The union has not endorsed a Democrat for president since 1996. The FOP endorsed George W. Bush in 2004 and 2004, John McCain in 2008, and did not issue a formal endorsement in 2012.“During his first four years, President Trump has made it crystal clear that he has our backs,” FOP President Patrick Yoes said. “Our members know that he listens to the concerns of our brothers and sisters in uniform and is able to make tough decisions on the issues most important to law enforcement. President Trump is committed to keeping our communities and families safe.”While Democratic nominee Joe Biden did not win over the support of the FOP, the Biden campaign responded on Friday by announcing it has garnered support from 190 law enforcement officials throughout the US.The list distributed by the Biden campaign includes current and former sheriffs, prosecutors and attorneys general.“Joe Biden has always stood on the right side of the law and is offering a much needed vision for our Nation. When asked the question, would you feel safe in Joe Biden’s America? The answer is yes,” said Retired Chief and former President of the Major Cities Chiefs Association, Tom Manger. “I’ve worked with Vice President Biden for years and know that he can heal the divide in our Country. He has condemned violence of all kinds, and there is no question that I would feel safe in Joe Biden’s America.”Previously, Yoes expressed his support for “Operation Legend,” a program launched by the White House to send federal agents to cities dealing with unrest following the death of George Floyd.“Law enforcement and the maintenance of public safety is primarily the responsibility of local governments,” Yoes explained. “But in too many of our cities, the violence has reached such levels that local agencies need additional resources. Our men and women in uniform in these jurisdictions are demoralized by anti-police rhetoric and they are exhausted from lengthy shifts in response to the pandemic. They desperately need the help that the President is going to provide.” 2353

Amid the pandemic, food banks are on average serving 60% more families than a year ago, according to a recent analysis by Feeding America. The analysis found that 80% of food banks in the Feeding America network have seen an increase in demand amid the pandemic.Despite this jump in demand, the organization says that food banks have “become accustomed” to increased demand for services. Feeding America’s analysis says that 40% of those going to food banks this year are doing so for the first time.Compounding issues for many families, food prices have jumped in the last year, according to USDA analysis. According to the USDA, the average cost of food prepared at home has increased 4% from October 2019 through October 2020. In the last 20 years, the average increase of food prices per year is 2%.The increase in prices has been most pronounced in meat, poultry and dairy. From October 2019 through October 2020, meat prices jumped 6.6%. Previously, meat prices generally increased 3% a year. The issue of increased prices was something that Feeding America leaders addressed last month as lawmakers have failed to come to an agreement on a new stimulus plan.“With food prices increasing at the fastest rate in 50 years and predictions that 1 in 4 children could face hunger this year, a 15 percent increase to the maximum SNAP benefit is the most effective way to meet the moment,” Kate Leone, Chief government relations officer at Feeding America, wrote. “Boosting SNAP benefits will provide families more resources to purchase the food they need through purchases at local grocers and businesses, which will stimulate economies across the country.“With the nation’s public health and economic crises continuing without an end in sight, our economy and families are being pushed to the very brink. We need our government to invest in the hunger-relief measures today because families struggling with hunger need it now.”Feeding America said that Americans can help by volunteering at their local food bank or donating to their local food bank or Feeding America’s COVID-19 Response Fund. Feeding America said that 60% of food banks in its network are in need of volunteers. 2188
