SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Friar Faithful won’t be able to attend games in Texas to cheer on their San Diego Padres, but fans can support the squad in this week’s National League Division Series games at Petco Park while in their cars.The Padres’ drive-in watch events will take place at Petco Park’s Tailgate Lot at 1301 K Street.The first game of the best-of-five series against the NL West rival Los Angeles Dodgers is set for Tuesday, Oct. 6. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., and the series will be played at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.Games will be shown on three separate large LED video screens, and fans who attend are encouraged to decorate their vehicles and don brown and gold in support of the team.Part of the drive-in experience includes dining options for four, a reusable bag with four rally towels, a car flag, and four hats.The team is reminding those who attend that health and safety measures will be in place, such as guests remaining in their vehicles unless they are visiting a retailer onsite or using a restroom.Face masks are required for all fans; the team says all staff members at the event will be wearing masks and conducting routine cleaning.There will be 20 feet of space between vehicles to promote more social distancing.Jaclyn Lash, the Padres’ Vice President of Special Events, said, “We’re still in a pandemic, we did everything we did that people stayed in their car or wore a mask. The section affected would be from Broadway down to L Street, where the Convention Center is located. The change could help during big events like the week of Comic-Con and holidays like Halloween. “It’s kinda mayhem,” says Michael Carbone, director of the Chuck Jones Gallery. “As far as trying to get from one block to the other, it could take you 15 minutes.” Carbone says while he loves the crowds during Comic Con, the rent is so high downtown, his gallery is moving to Little Italy.Some suggestions under consideration, according to the GQA: putting in street furniture, plants, local art sculptures or murals and entertainment venues. “Well, the safety factor is you can just stroll, you don't need to look out for cars, and we don't allow bicycles either,” said Sue Meek, a tourist from Scotland who says similar areas function well back home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The big concern for many health care workers during the coronavirus pandemic is their protective gear. “It's a scary time with not knowing exactly what's coming at us,” said Jay O’Brien, a local nurse and a representative for the Sharp nurses’ union.“A lot of nurses are very concerned that we don't have the proper equipment. The biggest concern is the lack of N95 masks,” O’Brien said. The masks block at least 95 percent of airborne particles, but there is now a shortage due to the pandemic.Nurses at UC San Diego said they had been wearing N95 masks when interacting with a suspected COVID-19 patient, but the Centers for Disease Control has loosened their guidelines. Now, they are used only during more complicated procedures, such as intubations.UCSD nurse Tiffani Zalinski wrote over the weekend on Facebook that the N95 respirators were "confiscated by the administration and were being distributed on a case-by-case basis." She was upset over the change, saying she works with patients "fresh out of surgery" and the N95 respirator were “the only thing that is going to protect" her. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The City of San Diego will consider making a significant change to the way voting is done, best known as "ranked choice voting."It would allow voters to list up to four candidates in order of preference, rather than just cast a traditional ballot for one candidate."It's a very interesting system that hopefully decreases some of the negative campaigning that we ordinarily see," Councilmember Mark Kersey, who supports ranked choice, told 10News Friday.In the proposed version of ranked choice that San Diego is considering, the top four candidates in each primary race would advance to the general election, rather than the top two. In November, voters would then rank the candidates by preference. If one candidate has more than 50 percent of the vote on first count, that candidate would win. If no candidate reaches 50 percent, the last place finisher would be thrown out. That person's votes would then be reallocated according to the voters' second choice. The field would continue winnowing until a candidate tops 50 percent.UC San Diego political science professor Thad Kousser says ranked choice allows voters to feel like they are not wasting their vote on a long shot, and helps avoid the idea of voting for the lesser of two evils. "It allows voters to take a sincere vote without throwing away the weight that their vote would have," Kousser said.Kousser also says ranked choice helps keep races from getting as negative.
