SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is hoping to stamp out a portion of city litter with newly installed cigarette butts receptacles along San Diego Bay.The Port of San Diego installed 31 of the cigarette butt receptacles in partnership with TerraCycle, which developed the disposal stands.Staff from the Port's General Services Department will be in charge of emptying the receptacles and shipping the used cigarette butts to TerraCycle, who in turn will process them to be used in recycled products.RELATED: San Diego County residents still disposing of more waste than other Californians"Reducing litter is a critical step in protecting San Diego Bay, our precious natural resource. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego business leaders reacted with alarm to President Trump's plan to slap tariffs on goods imported from Mexico.On June 10, the President plans to place a 5% tariff on items like avocados, tomatoes, cars and medical devices that come from south of the border. They would increase until reaching 25% on Oct 1. Trump says the tariffs would continue until Mexico addresses the issue of migrants at the border. The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce has come out strong against the tariffs. The Chamber says Mexico is San Diego's biggest trade partner, with a .5 billion manufacturing supply chain that's now at risk. Jerry Sanders, the chamber's CEO, says every manufacturing job in Tijuana leads to half a new job in San Diego. "If consumers cut back because of the price of goods, that means there will be fewer jobs and there will be less production on both sides of the border," he said. Some consumers already appear wary. Mancher Nasar, who lives in Rancho Bernardo, said he expects his grocery bill to rise as the tariffs kick in. "I'm concerned about middle class families," he said. "You're putting a 25% tariff but you're not getting 25% more in your paycheck."University of San Diego economist Alan Gin said tariffs are normally used for economic purposes, not political ones. "This is as far out as we've ever seen in the use of tariffs," Gin said. Gin said San Diegans will feel them, but that states like Texas and New Mexico will fare worse. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican whose term ends next month, revealed he is considering running for governor in an interview Thursday with the Los Angeles Times.The race will be tough for any Republican, according to political analyst John Dadian, because registered Democrats far outnumber Republicans in California. Those registered with no party preference also outnumber Republicans. “The uphill is he’d have to pull in all the people that are neither democrat or republican, but it’s certainly possible," Dadian said.According to Dadian, many political pundits consider Faulconer to be the most viable Republican in a general election, citing his record as a moderate mayor who frequently cross the aisle to work with Democrats on issues such as climate change. Faulconer's PAC raised more than 0,000 in the first half of the year, with the biggest donations coming from outside San Diego, which Dadian says is another indication of Faulconer's viability.Dadian says he expects Faulconer to spend much of his time traveling the state once he leaves office to build his profile and introduce himself to voters away from his home base.
