SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The cities of Escondido and La Mesa are taking measures to help restaurants expand outdoor dining after a rollback of indoor dining in the county due to surging coronavirus cases.Starting Friday, Escondido will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction on Grand Avenue, between Maple Street and Juniper St., to allow restaurants to expand temporary outdoor seating. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sunday morning's rain caused crashes on roadways, damage to construction zones and danger in Sunset Cliffs.One of those crashes had Cristal Ramirez in the passenger seat. "I was supposed to drive for brunch but my friend picked us up and I was glad because I didn't want to drive in the rain," she said.She said as they took the connector from the 163 to the I-8 West they started sliding, "I think we were driving a little too fast because of the rain." Ramirez said they grazed the guardrail. The tires were out of alignment, making it necessary to call for a tow truck."We were like what the heck this is wild!" She said.The group didn't let the accident ruin their afternoon, they continued on in Ramirez's car to Sunset Cliffs.The danger still lurking behind yellow caution tape, draped along the edge of one part of the cliff. From where she and her two friends stood, you could see the cliff carved away underneath the seemingly solid edge."I didn't think about it, I was like 'Oh we're close to the edge.' and we started playing around and I was like, 'Oh we probably shouldn't be playing this close to the edge," Ramirez said when she realized the danger.South of Sunset Cliffs, another problem at the Silver Strand State Beach exit off SR 75. The rain caused metal plates covering trenches in a construction area to bend inward.Crews rushed out to reinforce the plates to make them safe, adding wood supports. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The fate of a local little league is up in the air after a string of costly break-ins dating back six months.At the Sunshine Little League fields off Federal Boulevard, it's not all sunshine and baseball joy."It's unfair, and I just don't like it," said Isaac Lopez, 11, who plays in the league.Two different break-ins were discovered over the weekend. Locks were broken and doors were pried open."It's upsetting. These kids don't deserve this," said league president John-Mario Pujol.The thief cleaned out the snack bar. Stolen from storage sheds: umpire gear and all of the equipment for the kids in the older division, including bats, helmets, gloves, and catcher's gear sets."It's just so petty. Kids are one thing that should be hands off. Stay away from messing with the youth," said Pujol.The break-ins are the latest in a series dating back six months, with more than six in all. In those cases, more equipment and food disappeared. In other incidents, homeless individuals have been found sleeping in the sheds. The total loss from theft and damage is nearly ,000. Pujol says for a low-income community, the loss is painful."We're hurting, in a tough position," said Pujol.The position is made tougher because of COVID-19. Fundraisers have been canceled. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The former gang member who killed San Diego Police officer Archie Buggs in 1978 was granted parole suitability Thursday.Jesus Cecena was 17 years old when he opened fire on Officer Buggs during a traffic stop in Skyline. According to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, Cecena fired five times at Buggs, then paused, walked toward the fallen officer and fired a final bullet into his head at point blank range. The officer died on the street, his hand still on his service revolver.Cecena was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His term was later modified, due to a change in law making him eligible for Youth Offender Parole.Cecena has been denied parole at least 13 times.
