SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fixes are coming to elevators in a 14-story high-rise in downtown San Diego where senior tenants have faced challenges performing everyday tasks. But not soon enough for many.Some residents of the 65 and older Tower Apartments community have missed important appointments and had difficulties running errands, like trips to the grocery store, because of elevator outages.Some residents told 10News it's a long-running issue.RELATED: Seniors left with one elevator in 14-floor?San Diego buildingThe building is undergoing renovations - which residents say they appreciate. But they say the upgrades don't make it ok to shut down one of the two elevators and leave them with an elevator that they describe as unreliable at best. "Everybody is extremely upset," resident Carol Clark said. "And the thing is we don't seem to be getting many answers."One neighbor in a wheelchair broke down in tears during our interview. "It's people's safety," he said. "Not just mine, but everybody else."Shortly after running the story on 10News, management with the apartment complex sent a letter telling residents one of the elevators under renovations should be running by the end of June. After that, the other elevator that has had problems will be upgraded.Management said they will also schedule input meetings with residents for next week. 1372
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Former San Diego deputy Richard Fischer has been released from jail months after being sentenced to nearly four years in jail after pleading guilty to multiple assault charges. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, Fischer was released earlier in May on custody credits. "On May 15, 2020 the San Diego County Sheriff's Department received an order from the Superior Court setting forth the custody credits for Richard Fischer," the department said. Fischer was sentenced to 44 months in jail in December of 2019, followed by 16 months of post-release supervision after pleading guilty to four felony counts of assault under the color of authority, two misdemeanor counts of assault under the color of authority, and one misdemeanor count of false imprisonment. The charges stemmed from attacks on 16 women, City News Service previously reported. Fischer was accused of assaulting women while on duty between 2015 and 2017. The victims said Fischer groped, hugged or tried to kiss them. Fischer originally faced 20 felony and misdemeanor charges. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Horton Plaza's sale to real-estate firm Stockdale Capital Partners hopes to revitalize the plaza back to its former glory.10News reported the downtown shopping center was in escrow back in June. Now, plans for the site's future are being released, including a hub for mixed-use offices, retail, and restaurants, according to the firm's plans. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Flu activity is slowing down throughout San Diego County, the County Health and Human Services Agency said Wednesday.Across the county, 14 more flu deaths have been identified over the last week, though 10 of those fatalities happened earlier in the season and have just now been confirmed.A total of 283 flu deaths have occurred in the county this season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Frustrated business owners in the Midway District say an old strip club was a better neighbor than the current property owner, which happens to be a church. The Rock Church bought the strip club, formerly known as The Body Shop, in August of 2018. Now, businesses say nothing has changed except there’s now more trash and drugs. Neighbors say they want the church to clean it up. Noor Shamoon comes to work at Navis Pack and Shop to a very unwelcome sight. “Food, trash feces on wall, on our vehicles.”He says it’s a foul odor and claims people who hang out in the area vandalized the businesses work truck. Employees at the Midas muffler business across the street also say trash and loitering have become huge problems. “We're trying to run a business and it's hard when you have that across the street,” said Gary Stricker. People who work in the area say prostitution is rampant as are drugs. One man reportedly overdosed recently. “I think he maybe shot up some kind of drug or something. We were concerned about him so we called an ambulance,” Stricker said. When The Rock Church dropped the banner over the “nude girls” sign at the former strip club, they promised to clean up the neighborhood. Since the church purchased the property for .3 million, they haven’t touched it. "I hope they do something about that to clean the place up you know,” Stricker said.
