The Farmers’ Almanac has released its wintertime forecast for 2020-21 on Monday, and said it is expecting a cold, snowy winter for much of the United States.Where it is normally cold enough to snow in the US, the Farmers’ Almanac predicts above average snowfall in most areas. From the Mississippi River to the east, the US is expected to see below normal temperatures. The northern Plains and Rockies will also see colder than average temperatures according to the almanac. The Pacific Northwest could see some of the most pleasant weather of the winter in the US, with mild and dry conditions expected there. The southwest is expected to see normal temperatures.Snow lovers, before you get too excited by the forecast, know that long-term forecasts have a tendency to be off.Last year, the Farmers’ Almanac predicted a “Polar Coaster Winter” for much of the US. Those predictions did not come to light, especially in the Midwest, which had a well above average winter.Still, the Farmers’ Almanac stands by its projections."Preparing people for the unexpected is more important than ever," states editor Peter Geiger, Philom. "Our job as editors of the Farmers' Almanac is to pass down valuable tips and advice to help our readers thrive, no matter the obstacles."To see more detail on the Almanac's forecast, click here. 1328

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday that it’s investigating salmonella cases linked to pet bearded dragons and hedgehogs. The CDC said that 13 salmonella infections in eight states have been potentially tied to handling the pets. The CDC confirmed that seven of the infections resulted in hospitalizations. Ten of the 13 ill people reported contact with a bearded dragon. Those who reported illnesses said they purchased bearded dragons from pet stores, but a common supplier has not been identified. The CDC said that two similar outbreaks were tied to hedgehogs in the last decade. The CDC offers owners of pet bearded dragons and hedgehogs the following tips:Always wash hands thoroughly with soap and water right after touching your pet or anything in its environment.Don’t kiss or snuggle your pet because this can spread Salmonella germs to your face and mouth and make youKeep your pet out of your kitchen and other areas where you eat, store, or prepare food.Clean items you use to care for your pet outside the house, if possible. If you clean the items indoors, clean them in a laundry sink or bathtub. Make sure to thoroughly disinfect the area right after.Don’t let children younger than 5 touch the bearded dragon or hedgehog because young children are more likely to have severe Salmonella illness. Before bringing home a new pet, research the pet’s needs and see if it’s a good fit for your family. 1444

The Department of Homeland Security formally requested that the Pentagon extend the deployment of active-duty troops on the southern border Friday, potentially extending their deployment 45 days beyond the original deadline of December 15."Given the ongoing threat at our Southern border -- today the Department of Homeland Security submitted a request for assistance to the Department of Defense to extend its support through January 31, 2019," Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Katie Waldman told CNN in a statement."This request refines support to ensure it remains aligned with the current situation, the nature of the mission, and (Customs and Border Protection) operational requirements," she added. The Pentagon confirmed receipt of the request but said Secretary of Defense James Mattis had yet to sign off on it:"We have received the Request for Assistance from the Department of Homeland Security, it is with the Secretary (of Defense) for consideration."There are currently some 5,600 troops at the border, divided among Texas, California and Arizona.President Donald Trump sent the troops after spending the weeks leading up to the midterm elections decrying a procession of migrants that was still thousands of miles from the US border. Last week, Trump granted the troops new powers to aid in "crowd control, temporary detention and cursory search" while protecting Customs and Border Protection personnel from the migrants, should they engage in violence.Defense officials have suggested that some of the troops, primarily engineers involved in enhancing infrastructure at points of entry, could be drawn down in the relative near term as those tasks are completed. Two officials tell CNN that the number of trumps assigned to the mission is likely to drop to 4,000 as a result.Other functions, including helicopter support to help move Customs and Border Protection personnel to different areas along the border, are likely to continue. The deployment's extension means the Pentagon's initial cost estimate of million for the border deployment is likely to increase as that estimate was based on the mission ending on December 15. 2175

The erratic stock market just made a serious comeback.Fears about slowing earnings growth sent the Dow careening 549 points lower on Tuesday before the index raced back to life.By the closing bell, the Dow was only down 126 points, or 0.5%.Similarly, the Nasdaq closed down 0.4%, erasing the vast majority of a 2.6% plunge. The index also climbed out of a technical correction, a 10% decline from prior highs. The S&P 500 suffered its fifth straight loss. But the broad index finished just modestly lower after touching its weakest point in nearly four months.Market veterans saw little reason for the dramatic recovery -- other than the fact that stocks had gotten to oversold levels."It was an impressive day. We reversed on very little news," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley FBR.Hogan pointed to how the rebound was led by two of the most beaten-down corners of the market: homebuilders and chip makers.Stocks sold off early on Tuesday after major US companies reported gloomy results and guidance. Disappointing numbers from Caterpillar and 3M reinforced ongoing concerns about how long blockbuster profits can last, especially given tariffs and rising costs."Investors are skittish about whether we've seen a peak in earnings," said Mark Luschini, chief market strategist at Janney Capital Management. "It's a schizophrenic market environment where things that didn't matter suddenly do."It's been a scary month for investors. The Dow and Nasdaq are on track for their worst months since January 2016."The market is fragile," said Rich Guerrini, CEO of PNC Investments. "But we're telling our investors to relax. We're in a correction. I think the market does have some legs left."The CNN Business Fear & Greed Index slipped further into "extreme fear." A month ago the gauge of market sentiment was flashing "extreme greed."Wall Street was also spooked by extreme turbulence in China, the epicenter of the trade war. The Shanghai Composite dropped 2.3% overnight. The sell-off wiped out a chunk of Monday's spike, the benchmark index's best day since March 2016. 2114
