SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - — San Diegans are not allowing the pandemic to dampen their holiday spirit. This much was apparent at the beginning of Taste of December Nights.Within moments of its opening Friday, a line of cars streamed down Park Boulevard, waiting for a chance to order food from about a dozen vendors lined up at Inspiration Point in Balboa Park. "We've been going to December nights every year, but we didn't want to miss it this year," said Jasper Pascual, of National City, who came with his girlfriend Wendee. "It's something new, something interesting."The pandemic has upended decades of tradition, including December Nights in Balboa Park. Thousands normally pack the event in Balboa Park, enjoying holiday decorations, museums and food. This year, the event is a drive through for food vendors, with participants required to stay in their cars and wear masks. Pedestrians, bicyclists and scooter riders are not allowed. "This event obviously is re-imagined, it's different, but again I think it's the type of event that I think is just what some folks will need," Mayor Kevin Faulconer said as he kicked off the event. San Diegans appeared to agree, waiting in stop-and-go traffic to get into one of two ordering lines. A worker from one of the eateries comes to the window, takes an order, and eventually brings the food. Options included coffee, mini donuts, Cajun and kettle corn."Just tell people be super, super patient, bring some music, relax, have fun, enjoy it, because it's going to be a while," said Hellen Silva, who came with her husband and mother. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A family killed in a Logan Heights house fire in October was laid to rest Friday.Jose Antonio Romero Mayo, 44, Nicolasa Mayo-Cortes, 46, and daughter Iris, 21, all died from their injuries following the Oct. 13 fire.Funeral services were held at Saint Anthony of Padua in National City Friday morning.RELATED: Family's oldest son charged in Logan Heights house fire deathsTwo other surviving family members, Wendy and Angel, were out of the hospital and in attendance.After the church service, a funeral procession drove by the house the family once called home. Loved ones shared a moment in front of a memorial placed outside of the charred, boarded-up house on Clay Avenue.Friends of Mayo-Cortes described her as a hardworking mother who went through many hardships but was always resilient. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 46-year-old Oak Park man is being held without bail in San Diego's Central Jail after San Diego Police say he kidnapped a toddler and molested her.Francisco "Freddy" Diaz faces 8 felony counts, including burglary, kidnapping sexual assault and lewd and lascivious acts on a child under the age of 14. His alleged victim is just three years old.The girl's father, Silvester Soltero told 10News he was working on his car when, unbeknownst to him, the "strange" man who lived next door broke into a bedroom window, grabbing his sleeping daughter.Soltero said Diaz' mother brought his daughter home, but she didn't have her pants. “I grabbed my daughter and I was like, baby what happened?" Soltero said his daughter proceeded to tell him the man touched her private parts.  When the father asked who the man was. Soltero said his daughter pointed out Diaz."I lost it," said Soltero.When the father approached Diaz he became hostile.  “He started screaming if you snitch on me I'll kill you," recalled Soltero.The men fought.  Soltero showed a bruise where he said Diaz tried to poke him in the eye with a fork.Eventually, Diaz ran off, but San Diego Police caught him a short distance away.That's when Soltero said things got worse.  He soon learned his neighbor was a registered sex offender.“They should have told me, they should have told me I was living next to a pedophile, If I had known I wouldn’t have brought my daughter around here, there’s no way in hell," he said.Court records show Diaz was convicted in 2006 for molesting three girls on the playground adjacent to Oak Park Elementary School, which is right across from his mother's house.  He was sentenced to eight years in prison, in part because he already had a criminal history.  In 2000, Diaz was convicted of making a terrorist threat and assault with a deadly weapon.Court records show Diaz is schizophrenic and abuses drugs, specifically methamphetamines. A psychologist is quoted in court documents saying, "If he can remain in treatment, and avoid drug and alcohol abuse, he should not pose a danger to the community's children."12 years later, Diaz finds himself back under the legal microscope.Soltero wants to know why a registered sex offender could live right across from a school full of potential victims, and right next door to the home where Soltero's daughter and three other children live.San Diego Police say Diaz was in full compliance with the terms of Megan's Law.  He is required to check in with police every year and he does so, said Lt. Jason Weeden.  Because Diaz' child molestation convictions were misdemeanors, he doesn't have to steer clear of schools and playgrounds.Silvester Soltero says if that's true, the law should be changed.  “If you’re a sex offender you shouldn’t be by a school, period," he said.Diaz will be arraigned before a judge Wednesday.  Soltero says he will be there to make sure justice is done. 3102

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A City Heights native is returning to San Diego as part of the Broadway tour of Miss Saigon.Jackie Nguyen is a member of the ensemble, but says this show has always had a special place in her heart."It was the very first musical that I saw, ever," says Nguyen.Getting the chance to perform in her home town is a thrill for Nguyen, who says about 20 family members and friends will be at each show throughout the weekend."I've always wanted to play the Civic Theater because this is where I first saw my big Broadway musicals in high school," she says. "It's a full circle moment for me."The show also has significance for her family, as Nguyen's mother is from Vietnam and has a similar story to the main character, Kim."When you are introduced to Kim at the beginning of the show, she's 17 and she meets and American GI. My mom, in the midst of the war, when she was 17, she also met an American GI. And they got married and had children from that. And eventually went to America," says Nguyen.That connection makes performing in Miss Saigon even more meaningful every time Nguyen steps on stage."Every night, i know that I am trying to give my family and my mom some type of honor in some way," she says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Clairemont woman received a big shock when she looked at her doorbell camera video and found out who vandalized her truck.Every time Kris Larrabee looks at the scratch across the hood of her truck, she gets more upset."Deeply angry and deeply hurt," said Larrabee. The damage appeared Thursday morning after her husband parked the truck in the driveway the night before, blocking part of the sidewalk. "He came back from a long road trip, exhausted. He parked it there so he could unload it the next day," said Larrabee.Just before 6 a.m. on Caywood Street, their Ring video shows an older woman walking a dog, before she pauses to look at the truck. Immediately, she walks across the driveway and runs her hand along the hood, leaving behind a new scratch. Larrabee says repairs will total several thousand dollars."I couldn't believe it. I was shocked," said Larrabee.The identity of the culprit made her heart sink."She's a mature woman. At her age, she should have known better," said Larrabee.Larrabe was even more taken aback, because her other car has been keyed eight times in the driveway in the past year. She had suspected teenagers. In all, neighbors have reported dozens of similar incidents in the past year. A block away, the owner of a van and another vehicle tells 10News he has also been keyed eight times. In all those incidents, the sidewalk was partially blocked. The neighborhood is an older one with shorter driveways. "This is not the solution. She could have left a note. She could have come to us. There's no justification for the anger taken out on a neighborhood," said Larrabee.A detective has been assigned to the case and sources tell 10News police do know who the woman is. 1739
