SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A powerful new public service campaign called "End Family Fire" launched Wednesday by the Brady Center for Gun Violence Prevention aims to promote awareness for gun safety in the home. The center says eight children are hurt or killed in a firearm accident every single day in the United States. Carol Landale with the Brady Center says the goal of the campaign is to show people that something can be done. According to the center, more than four and a half million children live in homes with loaded and unlocked guns, and three in four know where the guns in their home are stored.The term, “Family Fire” was developed specifically for this campaign and refers to a shooting involving an improperly stored or misused gun found in the home that results in death or injury.The Brady Center’s goal is to introduce “Family Fire” into the vocabulary of the American public, much like "Designate a Driver" and "Secondhand Smoke Kills" became powerful and effective slogans for their respective causes.  1071

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man is accused of having and distributing explicit images of minors.According to a federal complaint that was just unsealed authorities allege Gilad Daniel Reifler knowingly distributed visual depictions of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct and possessed images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.The federal documents say agents used peer-to-peer file sharing software to connect to his computer in January 2017 and obtain more than four thousand images. Agents say they were able to connect to the computer on two other dates and obtain more sexually explicit files.According to the complaint in June of 2017 agents searched Reifler’s home where they claim he admitted to obtaining and distributing child pornography via the same P2P file-sharing program that they used to obtain the images from a device in his residence.Court documents say, “following the execution of the search warrant I reviewed media seized from Reifler’s residents. The results showed over 170,000 images and over 10,000 videos depicting minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct on media seized.”A man who identified himself has Gilad Reifler told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin he had no comment about the allegations.10News tried to get a hold of Reifler’s attorney, but as of this writing have not heard back.The FBI tells Team 10 they can’t comment on anything outside of what’s already in the public documents. 1466

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man claimed four off-duty San Diego Police officers beat up him outside of a local bar.“I have a laceration on the back of my head, three staples, a lot of bruises a lot of cuts on the face,” said Jonathan Felix.Standing in his attorney’s office, Jonathan Felix described a November night he’ll never forget."All I remember is waking up in my own pool of blood a few times,” Felix told 10News.Felix said that after working a shift at a restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter, he stopped by a Mission Valley bar for a drink.He said he lives nearby and uses its parking lot because parking in the area is scarce.According to Felix, before he headed home for the night, he saw four men standing near his car. He said he didn’t know them, but wanted to make sure the valuables he had in his vehicle were safe.He said after a few interactions with the guys, they didn't leave and appeared to be intoxicated.He claimed the men never identified themselves as San Diego Police officers."I felt threatened for my life,” Felix said.Felix's attorney said at some point, Jonathan Felix pulled a gun and held it at his side. The officers surrounded him, and the situation escalated.The San Diego Police department saw it differently, calling the off-duty officers victims of assault with a deadly weapon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heartbroken dog owner is demanding answers from a motel in Mission Valley.Mary Prevost left her 4-year-old German Shepherd alone her room Saturday night when she went to dinner then found out later it had been hit and killed on Interstate 8.“I opened my door and my dog wasn’t there,” said Prevost, “I ran down to the front desk and said my dog wasn’t there and the woman said around 8:30 they had seen a dog running around in the parking lot.”Prevost says the motel staff said they tried calling her but they had dialed the wrong number.The dog owner then drove around Mission Valley as Saturday night turned into Sunday morning — then animal control rang.“She apologized and said that a dog that fit my description with a red collar had been hit on the highway and she was on the side of the road,” said Prevost through tears.“I planned to take her to Coronado beach the next day and instead I picked her up dead on the highway,” said PrevostPrevost had 4-year-old Valkyrie cremated on Sunday, but now she is grappling with Motel 6 management about how this happened.Prevost says the motel's risk managers told her the dog likely opened up the door on its own.“If they just called me or animal control or the police,” said Prevost, ”I could have gotten her because she was alive.”She says the hotel has video of the dog wandering the motel and the parking lot, but they won’t let her see it.Motel 6 has denied multiple requests by 10News for comment.Prevost says it just doesn’t seem fair to blame the dog.“The problem is even if she got the door open,” said Prevost, “they just let her go.” 1622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of activists are upset after the San Diego Police Department rescheduled a Black History Month celebration for the department's current and former black police officers.The department's celebration was scheduled to take place Saturday, February 24th, but was canceled just days before. The group says a committee of officers was appointed to plan the event in January. They think the cancellation was politically motivated. Monica Montgomery spoke during a brief press conference on Monday at the Civic Center Plaza. She thinks the decision to reschedule the event was made after the keynote speaker was announced. The speaker was supposed to be Geneviéve Jones-Wright, the candidate for San Diego district attorney. She's running against interim D.A., Summer Stephan. The police department told 10News the event was rescheduled due to planning conflicts. Lt. Scott Wahl said they plan on notifying officers when a new date is set. The D.A. sent 10News the following statement: "District Attorney Summer was not involved in the planning or the rescheduling of this event." 1143
