SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego declared Thursday, August 6, as "Officer Jonathan Wiese Day."Wiese was the San Diego police officer who saved two-year-old twin girls after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs in June. The officer also saved the girls' father from the water. On Thursday, a proclamation was read and presented during a virtual Rancho Bernardo Community Council meeting.Wiese said he didn't rescue the girls for recognition, but said it was nice to see community support. The rescue happened early in the morning on June 13. Wiese, a K-9 officer, rappelled off a cliff using his 100-foot long dog leash to help.Wiese told 10News he is actually scared of heights and was thankful that it was dark the morning of the rescue. He joked that his wife told him he wouldn't have to wash the dishes on his day and that he hoped he'd get a free cup of coffee.Wiese was also the officer that helped take the suspected Poway Synagogue shooter into custody in April 2019. 989

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The cost of housing in California isn’t just affecting first-time home buyers, it’s also taking a toll on retirees, according to a report from Global Atlantic Financial Group. The research, based on data from more than 4,000 people nationwide, found that retirees in California spend nearly ,575 a month: 30 percent more than the average retiree in the U.S. at ,008.Housing costs that build up during working years also take a toll. Nearly half of California’s non-retired residents ages 40 and up owe an average of 4,876 on their mortgages, compared to the national average of 4,770. Global Atlantic claims that sky-high housing expenses force California residents to make sacrifices during retirement, including cutbacks on restaurants and entertainment, travel and vacations and charitable giving. Almost 40 percent of retirees nationwide are spending more than they expected."Many Americans adjust their lifestyles and cut spending once they see how quickly costs can add up in retirement," says Paula Nelson of Global Atlantic. She says it's an important lesson for those currently in the workforce to understand. "While older retirees are collecting income from employer-sponsored retirement plans, such as pensions, younger and future retirees may not receive the same benefits. Not only have pensions gradually become less common, but the data shows that younger retirees are also less likely to have much saved in other defined contribution plans, like 401(k)s," says Nelson.More than half of retirees wish they'd handled their financial planning differently, according to analysts. The top three regrets include not saving enough, relying too much on Social Security, and not paying down debt before retiring. 1758

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The memories came flooding back for Vietnam veteran Ray Hildreth as he returned to Camp Pendleton 50 years later. He wanted to tour his old unit, the 1st Recon Battalion."Looking at the mountains, I remember having to run up and down them!"And while the current 1st Recon Battalion Marines may not recognize Hildreth, they know his story. In June of 1966, Hildreth's unit was stationed on Hill 488 in the jungles of Vietnam. Before the week was over, they would fight the battle that would make them the most highly decorated small unit in the entire history of the U.S. military, winning a Congressional Medal of Honor, four Navy Crosses, thirteen Silver Stars, and eighteen Purple Hearts—some of them posthumously. There were just 18 of them when they encountered the enemy, a battalion of over 200. "Early on in the battle, and all the Marines here can identify with this, the NVA yelled out 'Marines you die in an hour,' and we had some colorful words to say back to them, and said, come and get us," remembers Hildreth. The late Staff Sergeant Jimmie Howard served as platoon leader with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion and led the defense of Hill 488 when attacked by the North Vietnamese.Howard had combat experience from Korea, and Hildreth credits the leader with keeping them alive. "Sergeant Howard said, 'Laugh at them!' And we did, we laughed out loud at them. Later I went back to Vietnam, 2011. I met one of the NVA we fought against. I asked him, what did you think when we laughed at you? He said we thought you were a much bigger unit. And it was that laugh, I'm sure of, that made them not just try to walk over the top of the hilltop and take us," said Hildreth. When they were out of grenades, the men began throwing rocks. "If we hadn't laughed at them, by sheer numbers, they could've walked across the top of the hill and killed us. At the end of the day, there were maybe eight rounds of ammunition left between us."The unit killed an estimated 200 people.Of the 18, all were wounded, and six died. Hildreth wrote a book about the battle, titled Hill 488."I thought people needed to know about the battle, not everyone went over there took drugs and smoked pot," said Hildreth. "We went over there with a different outlook, we're supposed to be here, there's a reason for it, and we done our job. We didn't protest."During the visit, Hildreth was accompanied by some of Staff Sergeant Howard's family members. 2456

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Gaslamp Quarter Association has plans to turn a section of Fifth Avenue into a pedestrian friendly promenade. The section affected would be from Broadway down to L Street, where the Convention Center is located. The change could help during big events like the week of Comic-Con and holidays like Halloween. “It’s kinda mayhem,” says Michael Carbone, director of the Chuck Jones Gallery. “As far as trying to get from one block to the other, it could take you 15 minutes.” Carbone says while he loves the crowds during Comic Con, the rent is so high downtown, his gallery is moving to Little Italy. Some suggestions under consideration, according to the GQA: putting in street furniture, plants, local art sculptures or murals and entertainment venues. “Well, the safety factor is you can just stroll, you don't need to look out for cars, and we don't allow bicycles either,” said Sue Meek, a tourist from Scotland who says similar areas function well back home. The Gaslamp Promenade project could allow certain hours for vehicle traffic, such as 3 a.m. - 11 a.m. The projected cost is currently million. The association says they have a plan to use grant money and fundraise to make the project happen. “I think this is something that will take us to the next step and for many years in the future to help drive tourism, drive economic impact to businesses and the city. I think this is a future vision that everyone can be excited about,” said Michael Trimble of the Gaslamp Quarter Association. You can take a look at what the Promenade could look like and ask questions online. 1617
