SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Sisu Academy, a free boarding school for at-risk teenage girls, needs help to get the school year started."We are a little cash strapped right now," says school founder Jabez Labret. "We need to get some cash in the door to get over the starting line so we can access those grant dollars coming this fall to keep the program running."Labret says the school has plenty of money lined up in grants and in-kind donations once classes begin, they need some bridge funding until then.He says the school's mission makes it a worthy cause for donations."This is more than just another school," Labret says. "This is truly about changing these girls' lives."The school will enroll 20 girls this fall, all of them from at-risk situations. They hope to add a freshman class each fall and eventually have 350 students."It could be drug or alcohol issues at home, domestic abuse, homelessness," he says. "It could be that mom and dad both work two jobs and are just struggling to be able to keep food on the table."Labret says a boarding school puts the girls in a stable, focused environment that will help them establish a foundation for the future."We don't just teach the academic side," he says. "We teach them social and emotional skills, the entrepreneurial side, we go out into the community and do community service. It gives us a lot of options to get out of the learning environment."One student who will enroll this fall says she's excited about the prospect."Going to school would help me so that I can get my mind off my troubles at home," says Analys Franklin. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The son of artists, Steve Maloney says creating art has always been in his DNA."It makes you feel good, making art makes me feel good, really," said Maloney. The project he is most proud of is featured in the documentary Take Me Home Huey, which is being screened during San Diego's GI Film Festival. Produced by Los Angeles filmmakers Alicia H. Brauns and Christine N. Steele, the film documents Maloney's transformation of a Vietnam-era Medevac Huey Helicopter from a wounded warbird, shot down in combat in 1969, into a colorful sculpture with a mission to help veterans recover from Post-Traumatic Stress."What my purpose was to honor those 2.7 million or more American Vietnam veterans that never got a welcome home," said Maloney. Inspiration for the Huey sculpture came from Vietnam veterans themselves. Maloney interviewed several, listening to their stories, and learning what they felt while during the war. "What are you thinking about? Well, number one, probably your girlfriend, maybe your car, mom's apple pie."Maloney and the filmmakers were able to uncover the history of Huey 174, learning the names of surviving crew and two young soldiers killed during the shoot-down.The three survivors were reunited 50 years after their aircraft was shot down. "They almost wanted to hug it, for sure, they wanted to touch the cross, the medevac cross on the top. It just brought out their experiences, which they talked about," said Maloney. "The two pilots had a great feeling of guilt."Maloney says the project has helped Vietnam veterans cope with the traumas of war. Maloney is currently working on a book which will allow him to share more experiences not captured in the film, including the journey of Huey #174 as an art exhibition in various cities throughout the United States and the people he met along the way.The Huey sculpture is on display at the Palm Springs Air Museum. 1919

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego County jail system is being blamed after a part of a former inmate’s cheek was bitten off by another inmate who was mentally ill.10News was at Thursday afternoon’s press conference where their families accused the jail system of failing to provide adequate mental health resources. “I felt unprotected,” says Miguel Lucas. Lucas now has a scar running across his cheek. It comes after he says part of his face was bitten in an unprovoked attack by inmate Reginald Harmon. It happened in June at the Central Jail.Harmon is still behind bars, but now family members and supporters of both men are coming together to say the jail system that's run by the San Diego County sheriff's Department needs reform. “I was sick to my stomach and I was very upset with the jail,” says Harmon’s mother, Alicia Muhammad. She says that days before he got jailed, she made repeated calls to the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) hoping for intervention, but each time he was discharged. After being arrested for suspected DUI, she says she warned the jail. “I spoke with the lady at the front desk and advised her that my son had mental issues and she said, ‘Okay.’ She would let the guards know,” she adds.However, she says her son wasn't placed into a mental health unit. Even after he reportedly attacked a different inmate, the families say he was placed in a lower security unit and neglected by mental health providers for two days, until he attacked Lucas. “It’s just unfortunate that people had to go through what I went through and what people are still going through to this day,” says Lucas. Following the attack, the families of both men connected and found a friendship. Currently, Lucas is living with Harmon’s aunt and attends church with the Harmon’s family. Lucas did not want to press charges, expressing that he knew Harmon was having mental health issues at the time of the attack.The families plan to file a civil lawsuit against the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in the next few months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The U.S. Attorney's Office of Southern California announced charges Friday against a man in the death of a Camp Pendleton Marine who had an overdose in his barracks.The unidentified Corporal was found unresponsive on the floor near his computer chair on January 29, 2017. He was wearing headphones and appeared to have been playing video games, investigators said.An autopsy determined the Marine died of fentanyl toxicity. A pill found on the headboard near a powdery substance and a rolled-up dollar bill tested positive for fentanyl.A complaint unsealed Friday detailed drug charges against 25-year-old Kyle Shephard of San Marcos.Investigators said Shephard met the victim in November 2016 and sold him fentanyl and other drugs multiple times over three months.Shepard acknowledged the pills could lead to an overdose, according to the complaint.In December, Shephard was arrested and charged with possessing for distribution roughly 2,000 fentanyl pills.“What a senseless tragedy that another young life has been lost because of fentanyl,” said U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman. “This Marine was serving his country and had his whole life ahead of him. We are going to hold dealers accountable for the deaths that result from their reckless disregard for human life.”Shephard will be in court March 6 for a detention hearing.  1369

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The unofficial start of summer is here in San Diego and that means it’s time to hit the beaches and enjoy some sunshine.Health officials are reminding residents that it’s also time to check the water quality before heading out.The County of San Diego’s Department of Environmental Health checks the water on a regular basis and posts that information online.Due to the need to warn residents if water quality is poor, the county developed the “Check Before You Get In” website.The site allows people to check water conditions at more than 80 local beaches.
