SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County officials today announced the location of several ``Cool Zones,'' mostly in the hottest areas, where seniors and others can gather in air conditioned buildings during the ongoing heat wave.Safety measures will be in place to protect the health of visitors and staff, such as temperature checks, wearing of face coverings, and social distancing in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As San Diego County heads into a "Halloweekend," public health officials are urging members of the public to practice COVID-19 protocols -- including avoiding large gatherings such as Halloween parties and door-to-door trick-or-treating."These activities involve face-to-face interactions with people from different households," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "If a COVID-19 infection is detected among a participant, it will be very difficult to find and notify those who may have been exposed."These traditional Halloween celebrations are not advised, and large gatherings are not allowed, under state or local health guidance. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A murder charge was filed Wednesday against a man accused of striking a man in the head with a wrench outside a 7-Eleven store in the Rolando neighborhood, resulting in his death five days later.John Cowan Patch, 26, is accused in the Nov. 5 attack on George Almestar, 30, who was found around 4:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the convenience store near the intersection of El Cajon and Rolando boulevards.Paramedics performed CPR on the victim, who was bleeding from his head, and took him to a hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition, Officer Scott Lockwood said.RELATED: Suspect pleads not guilty to 7-Eleven attack that left man on life supportAlmestar died at the hospital on Nov. 10, according to a GoFundMe page created by the victim's family.A motive for the attack has not been disclosed.Patch was arrested the same day and was arraigned Nov. 8 on attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon charges. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 1.3 million ballots had been received by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters by mid-afternoon today, with around 51,000 votes cast at polling locations so far.The San Diego County Registrar's Office reported 1.36 million ballots collected by mid-afternoon out of the 1.95 million registered voters in the county.With county polling locations open early, about 126,000 residents were able to cast their votes in person over the past four days, the Registar's Office said.Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one. Voters who prefer to cast their ballots at their assigned polling place on Election Day can do so until 8 p.m.An in-person voting location tool can be found on the county's voting website, SDvote.com.County voters also have until 8 p.m. to drop off mail ballots at 125 drop-off locations throughout the county, which can found on the Registrar's website.Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said his office is working with county public health services to ensure the health and safety of election workers and voters. Personal protective equipment and sanitation supplies will be provided to staffers so they can conduct the election process safely.Voters casting ballots in person were instructed to bring a face mask and plan to maintain social distance.Locations of vote centers were chosen and configured to allow for queuing and voting while maintaining six feet of social distance. Masks will be required inside, but residents unable or unwilling to wear them will be allowed to vote curbside.Officials noted that the need to social distance may create longer lines than usual at in-person locations. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man who mailed more than four pounds of pure methamphetamine to Guam inside stuffed animals and had more than 500 counterfeit credit cards in his possession was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Thursday.Daniel Wayne Gorman, 33, pleaded guilty to sending four packages from a Jamul post office in 2016, each containing a stuffed animal filled with methamphetamine, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.The packages were mailed under the alias "Daniel German" and were intercepted in Barrigada, Guam, prosecutors said.He was sentenced Monday to 10 years for his plea to distribution of methamphetamine and five years for possession of counterfeit access devices stemming from fake credit cards and driver's licenses discovered at his home during a 2018 police search.Investigators found more than 500 counterfeit cards, along with "multiple fake Florida driver's licenses bearing the defendant's photograph but the personal identifying information of others," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Many of the credit cards also bore the names of real individuals who were not Gorman, prosecutors said. 1187
