SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A colony of 300,000 bees lives on the roof of the Marriott Marquis in Downtown San Diego, and the hotel says that's perfectly fine with them.In fact, they planned it that way.The bees are part of Bee Leaf USA's Urban Bee Keeping program, which is an effort to help the struggling American Honey Bee population."This is the absolute most fantastic thing we can do for beekeeping at this point," says Travis Wolfe, from Bee Leaf USA."For a corporate entity to onboard something as outlandish as honey bees to offset their carbon footprint is one of the most moving and engaging things that one of these businesses can do," he says.The bees have been on the roof for about five years. They gather pollen in a three-mile radius around the hotel.They also make honey -- lots of it."They make about 7 gallons a year," says Wolfe. "That really is an enormous amount to consume."Fortunately, the hotel's Marina Kitchen and Bar helps use the honey."The ethos of the restaurant is to be as local as possible," says Executive Chef Aron Schwartz. "What could be more local than our roof?"Schwartz has put the honey in seasonal offerings for the last few years. Recently, it's been part of the salad dressing in their tomato and cucumber salad. It's also been featured on the charcuterie board and in a honey almond cake."It's about being restrained," says Schwartz. We're not going to put honey into 16 dishes. We're going to put it in one or two."This month, the bar is adding a honey-infused whiskey to several of its cocktails. They've partnered with Malahat Distillery in Miramar, which is aging their whiskey for six months in barrels coated with honey from the roof of the Marriott."We get a more naturally infused honey flavor out of that than some of the bigger producers who just stir honey into the whiskey," says Bar Operations Supervisor Michael Girard."It tastes amazing. You can smell the honey, you can taste the honey, but it's not a sweet sugar bomb," Girard says.The drinks will be available throughout the summer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Carmel Valley family who moved from Parkland, Florida is upset after learning two Parkland victims died of apparent suicides.Erin George says these suicides in her hometown are re-opening old wounds. It has her wondering how many more lives will be lost due to the senseless tragedy. She said, “I was numb. I just thought when does the loss of life stop from this.”Erin’s daughter Lauren lost a friend in the shootings. She worries about the emotional impact the shootings will have on her daughter.Suicide prevention experts say the best thing you can do is look for warning signs and talk to your teenagers. Simply ask them if they have thought about suicide. They say the best time to talk about it is when they are not depressed. Warning signs include a drastic change in behavior or withdrawing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A family from Chula Vista is desperately looking for their 9-year-old loved one. Erik Ochoa was swept away by the current in Rosarito on Easter Sunday. Ochoa lives in Tijuana with his father. His sisters, Zusel and Hilary live in Chula Vista. The boy was with two other children walking along the beach in Rosarito when they were swept away. One boy made it out of the current and ran to get an adult nearby. The third child washed ashore, lifeless, 25-minutes after going missing. Erik hasn't been seen since. The sisters have been looking for their brother since they heard about what happened. They've been going from Imperial Beach all the way down to Border Field State Park.The Mexican Navy is actively searching on the Mexican side. The U.S. Coast Guard broadcast a message to boaters telling them to be on the lookout. Erik was last seen wearing green shorts and a striped shirt. The family tells 10News the Mexican Navy will search until Sunday.  1008

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old was hospitalized Saturday night after being shot at a gas station in Skyline. Police say the shooting happened at an Arco station near South Meadow Brooke and Paradise Valley Road. According to police, the victim and his friends were walking through the parking lot when one of them was shot. Witnesses told police an argument broke out between the victim and three other teens when one of the three boys, who are all under the age of 18, shot the 16-year-old in the stomach before running away. The 16-year-old was taken to the hospital where he is expected to survive. 613

SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - Trial started Monday for the Yuma, Arizona police officer accused of raping a woman during a visit to San Diego.Jared Elkins, 34, is charged with eight felony counts of rape for the alleged incident in September 2017.The 23-year-old woman’s mother called 911 to report a crime at a home on Marlborough Street in Kensington. Elkins, who is related to the alleged victim by marriage, was staying at her home.Elkins, the alleged victim, and two other family members went to dinner then watched a movie while drinking beer and wine at the home before the alleged assault occurred, according to prior court testimony.RELATED: Arizona police officer charged with raping San Diego womanThe alleged victim testified during a preliminary hearing in April that Elkins physically forced her to participate in sex acts despite her pleas for him to stop. The two other family members were asleep in the house so small "you can hear someone breathing in the next room," the woman testified.During the alleged assault, the woman said she asked Elkins what would happen if she cried out for help. "He said, ‘I would kill you,"' the woman testified. After the incident, the woman said she found another family member in the house and they called police.At a hospital, the alleged victim's blood-alcohol level was determined to be .09 percent, according to witness testimony.Besides forcible rape, Elkins is charged with rape of an intoxicated person, forcible digital penetration, two counts each of forcible oral copulation and oral copulation of an intoxicated person, forcible sexual penetration and sexual penetration of an intoxicated person.Elkins -- a seven-year veteran of the Yuma Police Department who later resigned -- faces 14 years in prison if convicted, according to Deputy District Attorney Lisa Fox. 1834
