SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police requested the public’s help Thursday to identify a man suspected of buying an Apple MacBook and iPhones through identity theft and credit card fraud. The man used a fake ID card with the victim’s real information to access the victim’s account at the Verizon store on Sports Arena Blvd. June 9, police said. Two new Apple iPhone X’s worth ,500 were added to the victim’s account. Police said the man also went to the Best Buy on Mission Center Road and bought a MacBook worth ,000 through the victim’s store credit card. The victim has no knowledge of how his information was accessed, police said. Investigators said the suspect is a white man in his mid 20s to mid 30s, heavy set, with short dark hair. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Unified School District is moving forward with plans to build a new elementary school in the Civita neighborhood of Mission Valley.In May, the District approved a plan to purchase land from Civita developer Sudberry Properties. Now, SDUSD has plans ready for a 2-story, 24 classroom campus, full of modern amenities. It will be able to hold 5-600 students."With new development in the area, we expect new families to come in. Those families are going to need an elementary school to attend," says District Facilities Communications Supervisor Samer Naji."Right now if you live in Mission Valley and have a young kid, you gotta drive out of Mission Valley to get them to school and get them from school. So a local school for those families is absolutely necessary," Naji adds.Sudberry has plans to build 5,000 new homes in the neighborhood. That, combined with other development on the north side of Mission Valley, is expected to bring a population boom. The District says they're trying to be ahead of the curve when it comes to having a school ready to serve the area.The new school will be on the corner of Civita Boulevard and Via Alta, just west of the new Civita Park. Right now, the land is occupied by a small grassy area and a dog park."The idea was to locate the school in a central location for the community that was really kind of civic heart or the social hub of the community," says Sudberry VP Marco Sessa. "We tried to create an environment here where really you can live, play, and work. A school is a big component of that."People who live in Civita say they're excited about the news, but also want to make sure it lives up to high academic standards."It's all about the level of education," says Russell Pontone. "It's one thing to build a beautiful building. But are you going to have the best teachers there? What kind of programs and resources are actually going to be available?"The District has not said how much it will cost to build the new school. Money from Proposition Z and local development impact fees will pay for the construction. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police said Wednesday officers detained a woman who reportedly had a shotgun in the parking lot of the department's headquarters.Police said a woman drove into the parking lot just before 12:30 p.m. One department employee saw she was armed with a shotgun, police said.Officers quickly surrounded the woman's vehicle and a Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) was on hand to assess and provide support to the woman, SDPD added.Within about 10 minutes, the police said the woman was detained. Several weapons and ammunition were also confiscated, according to the department. 617

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Unified is fast-tracking several security-related upgrades on several schools.The first upgrade started this week at Miramar Ranch Elementary school, where a new, taller perimeter fence was installed.The district made the decision last week to prioritize roughly -million worth of projects.  They will be paid for by a voter-approved bond measure. The plans were already on the district's to-do list, but they now moved up the schedule.A district spokeswoman says it is in response to the climate plaguing classrooms across America, where school safety and security are front and center.  Campus security has been under heavy scrutiny following the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.“Of course we are worried about school security in the wake of all the shootings,” Diane Hunter, a Miramar Ranch Elementary parent said,  “It’s a naughty problem because we want to balance logistics and ease of access for parents and volunteers, but we also want our kids to be safe.  So I’m glad that the school is taking a look at it and making improvements."The list of projects includes adding and upgrading things like fences, door locks and gate, visitor access control, site radios and security cameras.A timeline for the projects in the individual schools was not readily available.  1380

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- State lawmakers approved funding to hire an additional 230 employees for California DMVs. The decision comes on the same day they shut down a proposal to audit long wait times at offices throughout the state. DMV officials say they've seen a surge in demand at offices from people getting the new REAL ID License, which you can't do by mail or online. State Assemblymember Phil Ting is spearheading an effort to shorten the wait. He says wait times at some offices were up to seven hours. "We've identified some technological fixes so that people can enter the information," said Ting. "There would be less clerical work."In July, lawmakers added an extra million to the DMV budget. The extra funding would allow them to hire 500 more employees, offer Saturday services and upgrades to some self-service kiosks. Assemblymember Ting got onboard when he had to go to the DMV in San Francisco and saw the line wrapped around the block. "It looked like people were waiting in line for a rock concert," said Ting. "Not for their driver's license."He says another problem was that people were waiting too long to renew.  "People couldn't get appointments before their licenses were expiring," said Ting. "We're asking to send those notices out much further in advance."DMV officials are also rolling out new programs like text message notifications and expanding self-service terminals to 50 grocery stores later this year. Drivers who want to get a REAL ID would still have to go into an office. DMV officials say you can expect to see reduced wait times by the middle of September, but they don't expect what they call "reasonable" wait times until December.
