SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Clairemont woman who fired a shot through the front door of her next-door neighbors' apartment after they complained about loud noises and yelling coming from her unit was sentenced today to 16 years in state prison.Brittany Lefler, 37, was convicted in May of four counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and one count each of making a criminal threat, shooting at an inhabited dwelling and child endangerment.Superior Court Judge Joan Weber said the defendant's addiction to alcohol led to the terrifying events of Dec. 29, 2016."This is a woman who really tried to kill people,'' the judge said. ``Alcohol led her to that.''Deputy Alternate Public Defender Gilson Gray unsuccessfully argued for a lesser sentence, calling Lefler's actions "significant recklessness'' while stressing that one shot was fired.PREVIOUS REPORT: Topless Clairemont suspect in custody after 8-hour standoffBut Deputy District Attorney Michael Reilly said Lefler pointed a gun in the face of one of her neighbors when he opened the door, saying, "I've got my finger on the trigger.''Reilly said one of the victims grabbed her 11-year-old daughter from behind the door just before Lefler fired the shot.Had Lefler fired a few seconds earlier, she might have been looking at first-degree murder, the judge told the defendant."You gave control of your life to alcohol,'' Weber told Lefler. ``Can you believe you're capable of trying to kill people?''A tearful Lefler apologized to the four victims, who were not in court for the sentencing hearing."I'm truly sorry for putting your whole family in danger,'' she said.Lefler vowed to get help for her alcoholism "so something like this doesn't happen again.''During the trial, Reilly said Lefler had been drinking and was "out of control'' and "verbally abusive'' after Erick Morales called police about 1 a.m.Morales and her roommates told police that Lefler kept banging on the wall and screaming in her apartment on Beadnell Way.When officers responded, Lefler wanted to know who called the police on her, according to body-worn camera evidence.Morales' 19-year-old son said at one point he went outside and asked Lefler to "keep it down,'' but she reached into her boot and pulled out what looked like a gun and he ran back inside."She (Lefler) said, 'C'mon outside, I'll bust a cap in you,''' Henry Molina testified. The witness said he had overheard Lefler telling police that she kept a gun for "things like this.''After he shut the door around 5 a.m., Molina testified that he heard another bang and his mother said, "She's shooting! She's shooting!,'' referring to Lefler.Reilly told the jury that Lefler pointed her gun at everyone in Morales' apartment -- including her boyfriend, 11-year-old daughter and son -- before pulling the trigger."She (Lefler) did it on purpose,'' the prosecutor said. "In a moment of anger and fury, she shot through that front door. Ms. Lefler sent a message with a bullet through that front door. She can't do that!''Gray told the jury that Lefler called 911 multiple times that night, but police did not help her.Lefler was home alone, scared and outnumbered by her complaining neighbors, Gray said. He told the jury that Lefler was ``practicing'' pole dancing inside her residence. Both sides were yelling at each other and Lefler fired the shot accidentally when a door suddenly slammed, according to Gray. 3408

SAN DIEGO — The County Office of Education is taking its annual job fair entirely online, with already more than 800 registered job seekers. The job fair, which is regularly held at Liberty Station, will instead feature virtual lobbies and virtual tables. Dr. Sheiveh Jones, who organized the fair for the office of education, said more than 25 school districts and charter schools are participating. She said there may not be as many openings as in prior years because of temporary budget uncertainty, but that could change by the end of the summer. "When a position does open, the district may invite you to apply or they may just recognize your name when they look at the applications," she said. Jones said the districts are hiring for both academic and non-academic positions. She added there is always demand for bilingual, special education, STEM and substitute teachers. She said her best advice is to check out the posted jobs online ahead of time at Edjoin, so jobseekers can be better prepared to meet hiring managers, or even apply before the fair. The event begins at 3 p.m. Tuesday and lasts for three hours. 1131

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 21-year-old woman who allegedly was drunk last weekend when she crashed her Lexus into a Lyft car at high speed on state Route 163 in Balboa Park -- killing a passenger in the Lyft vehicle and injuring the other two occupants -- was charged Friday with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury.Alondra Selena Marquez of San Diego was headed south on the freeway about 2:30 a.m. Saturday when she rear-ended the Mazda sedan near Laurel Street, according to the California Highway Patrol. One of two passengers in the Mazda, 40-year-old Giao Pham of San Francisco, died at the scene of the collision.ORIGINAL STORY: 1 dead, 3 injured in crash along SR-163A 33-year-old San Leandro resident remains hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury, while the 27-year-old Lyft driver is hospitalized with injuries of unknown severity, according to Deputy District Attorney Laura Evans.Marquez, who faces 13 years and four months in prison if convicted, had a .19 blood alcohol content at the time of the crash, Evans said.Marquez also sustained injuries in the crash, and was jailed Wednesday upon her release from a hospital. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former San Diego firefighter pleaded guilty Tuesday to a felony count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.Justin Curtis Price, 36, formerly a fire engineer-paramedic who had been with the city public-safety agency for 10 years, was arrested last April for the Nov. 1, 2018, sexual encounter with a 17-year-old girl.Prosecutors said Price had known the teen since she was about 9 or 10 years old.RELATED:San Diego firefighter to stand trial for alleged rape of underage girlSan Diego Fire engineer charged with sexually assaulting teenPrice is slated to be sentenced April 24 to five years felony probation and could also face up to one year in jail, according to Deputy District Attorney Jessica Coto. The sentencing judge will decide how much jail time Price could serve and whether he will have to register as a sex offender.Preliminary hearing testimony from last fall indicated Price admitted to having sex with the teen about two weeks after her 17th birthday in text messages with the girl's mother.San Diego police Detective Jeremy Margolis testified that he interviewed the victim, who said Price told her not to tell anyone about what happened, and that it would be "our little secret." 1231

San Diegans who recently saw Hamilton at the Civic Theater downtown, or had any business at City Hall may have parked in the massive garage that's just steps from both buildings. The city owns that 1,140-space parking garage, called the Evan Jones Parkade - for the founder of Ace Parking. Many city workers also use it daily, since they get an employee discount. But the garage has also become a source of frustration among them - and in some cases, much worse. Numerous city employees told 10News that the elevators often breakdown, especially when it rains. That forces some of them to walk up 10 flights of stairs after a day's work - instead of waiting longer for the elevators that are working. But a notice posted on the city's website paints a much darker picture. It says the city has responded to more than 200 calls for service for the elevators in the last year, and that breakdowns have increased 20 percent in the last six months. "The elevators have now become unsafe," the notice says. "There is the increased possibility of persons being trapped in a broken-down elevator, needing immediate medical attention and not being able to get it."Additionally, the permit posted in one elevator is two years expired."I'm going to zip up there and hopefully everything wil work out fine," said Andy Jones, of Scripps Ranch, who parked on the 10th floor in a visit to City Hall. "That's a lot of stairs to climb."City spokeswoman Nicole Darling said the elevators are safe and routinely inspected. She said the notice is actually an environmental document, and was strongly worded to speed up approval for repairs. The city plans to replace the controls for all four of the building's elevators, for .8 to .2 million, but doesn't have a start date. A spokeswoman for Department of Industrial Relations says the elevator permits actually expired in September, but the city was late on requesting its permit renewal. The city sent the request last week.    2034
