Jason Wells snapped photographs from his home's upper level of the virtual lake in his yard and said the flooding "is by far the worst I have ever seen or heard about" in his 40-plus years there."There are people that have had knee to waist-deep water in their houses," he told CNN Friday morning."Several people were rescued from their upper floors or attics by boat, or from Good Samaritans," Wells said.Much of the water receded by Friday afternoon and about 2 feet of water remained on the island as of 4 p.m.Jenni Starr, who lives on Ocracoke, posted a photo to Instagram of her yard and told CNN before the water went down her house had a foot of water in it.Sheriff's deputies, medics and emergency management workers were sent to the island to help people from their homes, the 1754
For years, millennials have been called out for job hopping and always looking for the next best thing. So, what’s causing the job hop and what can companies do to retain their younger employees?Charlie Harding is the CEO of Let’s Roam and he’s a millennial. He says he knows what the 30-somethings are looking for when it comes to a job."If a company is rigid and inflexible, it allows employees to job hunt or job hop, especially millennials," he says. However, the job market is tight right now and it’s giving millennials the option to choose the job that’s right for them. That could be part of the reason why they are job hopping.“They have a ton of confidence that if they were to leave that it would be OK,” says Karen Policastro, with the international recruiting firm Robert Half. “And if they go somewhere and it didn’t work out, they could just go somewhere else.”Millennials are in the driver seat and want new and unique experiences.Policastro says there’s a lot of competition, and millennials are looking for bigger paychecks, work life balance, healthy company culture, potential for career growth and a manager that values them.“If they aren’t getting it where they are, they are quick to leave,” Policastro says.Seventy-five percent of employees ages 18 to 34 view job hopping as beneficial compared to 51 percent of workers 55 and older.“I think there is a stigma that there is a lack of trust and loyalty,” Harding explains. “But it’s really up to the company to build that trust and loyalty. If they are leaving, it’s not because of the employee; it’s because of the company."No matter the generation, Harding believes it’s fairly simple for companies to retain employees.“If you are able to make employees happy and have a strong leader and understand what they want and how you can help them accomplish their goals, then you can do that,” Harding says. 1888

Hundreds of mourners paid respects to George Floyd in his North Carolina hometown while anti-police protests continue around the U.S. Family members of Floyd gathered for the memorial service at a church about 22 miles from Floyd's hometown of Fayetteville. What the memorial below:Floyd was killed on Memorial Day while being detained by four officers with the Minneapolis Police Department. His death was captured on cell phone video, which subsequently went viral. The killing of Floyd sparked massive demonstrations in Minneapolis and across the U.S., with protesters seeking justice for Floyd and calling for changes in policing policies. The nation’s capital prepares for what is expected to be the city’s largest demonstration against police brutality yet on Saturday. Military vehicles and officers in fatigues closed off much of downtown Washington to traffic ahead of the planned march. It was expected to attract up to 200,000 people outraged by Floyd’s death 12 days ago. Following days of unrest for Floyd’s death, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced that former officer Derek Chauvin, who was seen kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes, was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. On June 3, Ellison announced Cauvin’s murder charge was upgraded to second-degree murder. Additionally, the three other former officers seen in the video-- Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane—were also arrested and charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder for their role in Floyd's death.Large protests also took place across the U.S. and in major cities overseas, including London, Paris, Berlin and Sydney, Australia. 1703
