SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego Police are investigating Monday night's shoot out at the border at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Christopher Barajas said he was pulling up to the line to head into the U.S, but turned back. "Everyone started screaming before I even get to the line," said Barajas. It happened around 7:30 p.m. when police and Customs and Border Protection officers say the driver of a white pick up truck refused to stop at a secondary inspection area. Instead, the twenty-three-year-old allegedly accelerated and tried to drive straight through the port into the United States before being blocked by a vehicle. Police say the driver started firing shots from inside his truck and then got out and continued shooting at officers. Seven C-B-P officers returned fire, hitting the man at least once. Officers and San Diego Fire Rescue crews performed life saving measures, but the suspect died at the scene."If they didn't find any individuals in there, smuggling, he was probably hiding something in there," said Barajas.White plastic garbage bags could be seen sitting on the truck's tailgate, but police haven't released any information about what, if anything, was found. (KGTV) - The captain of the sister ship to the one that caught fire off the coast of Santa Barbara, killing at least 25, is sticking up for its crew.Ian Higgins is the captain of the Vision, a sister ship nearly identical to the Conception, which caught fire near Santa Cruz island Monday morning. Higgins spoke to 10News after media reports calling the safety protocol of the Conception into question."That vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard annually and also every five years for a more complete inspection," said Higgins, who works for Truth Aquatics. (CNS) - A San Diego County Sheriff's Department employee was behind bars Thursday morning on suspicion of burglary and identity theft, authorities said.Estella Velez, a 54-year-old licensed vocational nurse at the Vista Detention Facility, and her alleged accomplice, 44-year-old Raul Rios, were taken into custody Wednesday, sheriff's Lt. Nancy Blanco said.The pair is suspected of stealing a woman's purse in the 5500 block of Mission Road in Bonsall on July 10, then using the victim's credit card at several locations in North County, Blanco said.Rios and Velez were also seen on video surveillance in two attempted commercial burglaries in the 1700 block of East Vista Way in Vista on July 21 and 23, the lieutenant said.Velez was booked into the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee and Rios was booked into San Diego Central Jail, according to jail records. They both face multiple felony counts of burglary, conspiracy and theft.Velez was being held in lieu of 5,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Aug. 14.
