Across the West Coast, entire towns are being leveled by historic wildfires, and one northern California county is facing this horror for the second time in two years.Berry Creek’s hilly terrain is still smoldering, as homeowners anxiously wait to be let back into the area, although many already know they don’t have homes to come back to.“When they see the smoke or hear about a fire, their PTSD, whether you’re civilian or former military, it kicks in,” said resident Michael Zylstra, who evacuated from his home.Steve Kaufmann, the public information officer for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, compared the fires to a freight train.A freight train of fire, swallowing everything in its path.“When we have a fire like this, it makes for number one, explosive, but we are seeing erratic fire behavior we’ve never seen in our career,” Kaufmann said.Fires so erratic it’s capable of leaving a town unrecognizable.Michael Zylstra says his aunt and uncle won’t have a home to come back to. Miles of Berry Creek homes have been reduced to rubble.“It’s a scenario where the vegetation is completely bone dry,” he described.The town is a casualty of the North Complex Fire. Fueled by years of drought and extreme winds, it’s burned over 260,000 acres in northern California.“It took a huge toll on the community,” Kaufmann recalled. “It hit because it moved so fast, and we just didn’t have the resources to put in there to defend every structure involved.”With resources spread across 28 major fires, Kaufmann says it’s a challenge the state has had to adapt to.“We’re always prepared for the worst-case scenario,” he said. “This is probably definitely one of the worst cases we’ve seen in years.”Zylstra evacuated his home six days ago in the nearby town of Cherokee. As he waits for news, he helps fellow veterans cope with the trauma.“It’s been stressful,” he said. “They’re anxious, they get nervous, they don’t know what to do, they can’t sleep.”In large part because the community went through this nearly two years ago when the Camp Fire ripped through paradise killing 85 people and destroying nearly 19,000 structures.“It’s very painful memories for a lot of them,” Zylstra said.It’s painful for many to rebuild.“[In] a lot of people’s eyes, it will never be what it was; it will never ever be what it was in 20-30 years, what it used to be,” he said.And now, another town must also try and navigate life forever changed by fire.“We just need to all work together for that one common goal, to take care of each other,” Zylstra said. 2573

Actor, writer and media producer Tyler Perry has offered to pay for the funeral for Rayshard Brooks, the man who was killed during an altercation with police in Atlanta on Friday.Attorney L. Chris Stewart, who is representing Brooks' family, said during a press conference on Monday that Perry had offered to pay for funeral arrangements."We want to acknowledge and thank Tyler Perry, who we spoke with, who will be taking care of the funeral for the family," Stewart said. "And it's support like that and it's people who are actually in this community, that love the community, that want healing and families like this to never have to go through something like this. It's a step forward and we want to thank him for such a generous move."Perry has been known to provide funeral services for others in the past. According to ABC News, he paid for the funeral services for two 15-month-old twin sisters who died after they left in a hot car in Georgia in 2016. In 2019, he reportedly paid for the funeral of a single mother of four children from Milwaukee.Earlier this month, boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. paid for the funeral services for George Floyd, who died in Minneapolis police custody. Brooks was killed on Friday when police attempted to take him into custody for DUI. A struggle ensued, and Brooks stole an officer's stun gun and tried to flee the scene. Officer Garrett Rolfe shot Brooks in the back twice, and Brooks later died in surgery at a local hospital. AMC Theatres will reopen around 450 of its U.S. theaters in mid-July as part of a phased reopening following what its CEO called a “painful” hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.The Leawood-based chain’s first theaters will reopen on July 15, followed by its remaining 150 U.S. locations in time for the release of “Mulan” on July 24 and “Tenet” on July 31, according to a news release.AMC Theatres, already struggling before the pandemic, reported a nearly .2 billion loss for the first quarter of the year after it shuttered theaters worldwide.“After a painful almost four-month hiatus due to the coronavirus, we are delighted to announce that movies are coming back to the big screen at AMC,” AMC President and CEO Adam Aron said in the news release. “…I cannot emphasize enough how much care and attention to detail we have taken in developing AMC Safe and Clean, our absolute commitment to optimizing the health and safety of our theaters for our guests and associates.”Theaters will reopen with reduced seating capacity to encourage social distancing, along with increased cleaning, contactless ticketing, and mobile food and beverage orders.AMC said it expects different versions of seating limits in theaters to be in place until Thanksgiving, though it also acknowledged that those plans could change depending on local and regional health conditions.All theater employees will be required to wear masks.
