SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Police Department is looking for 72-year-old Dania Josefina Lopez, a woman who is believed to be missing and at-risk. Lopez was last seen by her family at 9 a.m. on Monday and has not been heard from since. Family members said Lopez suffers from dementia and has high blood pressure. She did not take her medication with her when she left home in San Diego's South Bay area. Lopez is described as 5'2", 150 lbs with brown eyes and gray hair. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands of SDG&E customers were left in the dark in Central San Diego, as an power outage hit late Wednesday.The outage affected about 5,800 customers in the Sorrento Valley, Mira Mesa, and Scripps Ranch areas just after 5 p.m., according to SDG&E's outage map. Those still without power dropped to about 1,900 customers by about 6 p.m.It's unclear what caused the outage. Crews were assessing the issue and estimated power would be restored by 8 p.m. up to 9:30 p.m. in some areas.Other outages were also reported in the Oceanside and Poway areas around the same time as well. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Salk Institute's cutting-edge research to reverse climate change is getting noticed and supported in a big way.Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos donated million through the Bezos Earth Fund last week, a huge boost after Sempra Energy jump-started the project with million Nov. 9.Salk's Harnessing Plants Initiative adapts crops we eat, grown around the world, to extract more carbon dioxide out of the air and hold it in their roots."It’s really great waking up every day and knowing that you can work on a problem that is so urgent and is the most existential problem in this world and I’ve been worried about this since I was in middle school," co-director of HPI Wolfgang Busch said.Busch said they came up with the project while brainstorming what positive impact on the world could they make with plants.He said they're focused on six crops including, corn, soybean, canola, wheat and rice.Busch said they are in the research phase and see two paths to achieving their goal, genetically modify seeds in the lab or specialized breeding between plants to get the traits they are looking for.These crops are already being grown around the world."If you take together the area that they are planted, it’s larger than the subcontinent of India," Busch said, a huge untapped potential.Busch said of the world's emissions each year, "it could be possible that 30% of this could be drawn down by these plants if it is widely adopted."Busch said we could get the modified plants in the ground and start seeing the effects in the next 10-15 years."I think I am very fortunate to work on this problem, I am really thrilled to do the work, to make an impact," Busch said. 1690

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Workforce Partnership is accepting applications for its income-sharing agreement, which only requires graduates to pay back the cost if they make at least ,000 a year.San Diegans have about a month to apply online for the program, which offers certificates in User Experience Design, Database Management, or Java Programming through UCSD Extension. The priority application period ends Aug. 2. Ellie Solorio is about to complete the program in Front End Development. She just landed a job at Petco, doubling her pay from her prior positions, such as in retail and administrative work."I mean it hasn't even sunk in yet really, but it's a complete sense of hope at the end that there are things I need to take care of and now I will be able to," she said.Participants get access to education and career services, which is paid for through the fund. Then, once they are done, they begin making payments based on their income for 36 to 60 months. Graduates make payments of 6% to 8% of their annual salary only if they are earning at least ,000. The money goes back into the fund that pays for the next group of cohorts. "With a student loan you're paying that back regardless of whether or not you are securing a job upon graduation," said Adrienne Chuck, an Income Share Agreement Analyst with the San Diego Workforce Partnership. "With an Income Share Agreement, you only pay it back if you secure a job and get a minimum salary."No student will ever pay more than ,800, according to the program's website.According to UCSD Extension, the programs currently offered cost ,875 for Java Programming, ,775 for database management, and ,400 for user experience design. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The United States Postal Service is handling nearly 16 billion deliveries this holiday season, a record number.Warren Burton, a program manager at the USPS, says it is a 12 percent increase from last year.“There’s a lot of online shopping,” he said, “a lot more than last year.” As a result, the USPS processing and distribution center at Carmel Mountain Ranch in San Diego added more seasonal workers. About 1,100 people are working around the clock up from the normal staffing of close to 900.“We gear up all year for this time of the year, we know it’s going to be non-stop, high volume-high demand,” Burton added.The White House declared Christmas Eve a federal holiday this year, but Burton says that USPS will remain open on Christmas Eve.“We greatly appreciate the gesture, but we’re going to keep working so we can keep the mail going,” Burton said.He says Dec. 20 is the last day to mail out a package or holiday card to make sure it is delivered by Christmas Day using regular shipping.
