Scientists are working to eliminate a type of heart disease in dogs using gene therapy. They're zoning in on a heart condition called mitral valve disease that’s common in 6% of dogs. Scientists are using Cavalier King Charles spaniels for the research. They tend to develop it at a younger age. Scientists at Tufts University have already tested gene therapy in mice. A virus is injected into them to deliver DNA to cells which causes them to create a protein. What it essentially does is stops the heart valve from getting thicker, stopping the valve from leaking. Researchers are now moving on to testing this in dogs. But they think the treatment could go beyond just canines. “Many of the dog diseases are naturally occurring and really great models for human disease,” says Dr. Vicky Yang, a veterinary cardiologist and research assistant professor at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. “And I can see this, if it becomes successful in dogs, potentially going into thinking about treatment for humans for mitral valve disease.”The biotech company behind the treatment agrees. It says it could also expand beyond heart problems. “I think a larger question, though, is if we are able to prove this thesis of treating aging, making the animal generally healthier, could also treat heart failure, what other diseases could we treat in dogs?” says Daniel Oliver, the CEO of Rejuvenate Bio. “And could we progress this treatment onto past dogs and other animals and possibly humans?” The gene therapy would only be used for dogs just starting to experience heart problems.Researchers still need to make sure the gene therapy is safe for all breeds before they make it available to the public. 1730

The article contains spoilers about the season 23 finale of "The Bachelor"It's the moment "Bachelor" fans have been waiting for, Colton Underwood handed out his final rose on "The Bachelor" finale Tuesday night. It was a suspenseful two-night finale for fans after Underwood was dumped by Cassie Randolph on Monday night's episode, leaving him with Tayshia and Hannah G. But in a shocking turn of events, Underwood turned around and said goodbye to both remaining women in order to ask Randolph for another chance.Underwood was able to chase Randolph down before she left Portugal and she agreed to meet his family and travel with him to Mallorca, Spain. They dated for a week and even had their night in the fantasy suite. But big questions still remained: Are they engaged? Did Underwood lose his virginity?Underwood and Randolph did get back together in Portugal and are still together. But they are not engaged, not living together and just taking things day by day. Underwood did reveal that he recently moved to Los Angeles to be closer to Randolph. As for whether Underwood lost his virginity, he and Randolph played coy and would only say they did what was "best" for their relationship. Host Chris Harrison took that as a yes.Although fans may have been disappointed that this season did not end in an engagement, Underwood did get a chance to hand out his final rose to Randolph during the live portion of the finale.Sometimes slow and steady wins the race, folks. 1484

A 9th grade student at Buffalo’s International Preparatory School in New York says she was forced to remove her hijab by an assistant principal.“He was like, ‘Take that thing off your head, you’re not Muslim or Arabian.’” That’s what Najah Travis claims assistant principal Marin Lyonga told her after pulling her to the side on Monday. She refused, and called her mother. When Luvita Franklin arrived she said she was speaking with a second assistant principal, Patrick Doyle, who told her it’s district policy to provide proof of practicing the Muslim faith to wear a hijab. In a recording of the conversation played by Franklin for our cameras Doyle can be heard saying “It is a district policy.” When Franklin asked whether it was new he replied, “It’s not new.”We send a transcript to representative from the school district. Buffalo Schools chief of staff Darren Brown says it is not a policy for the district that students are required to provide proof of religion. He says administrators are always free to inquire more about students’ religions and ask questions to understand more. After investigating this incident, Brown says the assistant principals asked to see proof of religion because they were familiar with Travis from a number of interactions, but had never seen Travis in a hijab before.Brown says administrators were worried about it being seen as offensive to other students, and wanted to ensure the hijab was not being worn as a fashion statement.“It wouldn’t matter if it was the first or the 5th time you’ve seen her wearing it, once she put it on her head, it shouldn’t have mattered,” said Franklin. In the recording with Doyle, he can be heard saying, “All she needs to do is bring a note saying she’s a part of the religion from somebody that’s a member of the (indistinguishable)…as long as that’s done, at that point she can wear it as much as she wants. Nobody will ever stop her. We fully support all religions.”Imam Pasha Syed at Jami Masjid says hijabs are not exclusive to the Muslim faith. Anyone, at any time can wear one. He also says even Muslims don’t wear hijabs daily.“It takes time. It doesn’t happen from day one. Some people may have to grow into it. Sometimes it takes years.”Brown said that Buffalo Public Schools prides itself on inclusion and dignity for all students. The district has looked into this incident and continues to investigate to determine whether it was handled appropriately by all parties involved. A Georgia homeowner shot and killed three masked teens as they approached his residence with their faces covered, authorities said. The three teens, one 15-year-old and two 16-year-olds, were all from the area but did not live in the specific neighborhood they were in, the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office said. The teens approached three residents at the front yard of a home early Monday morning and attempted to rob them, authorities say. One of the would-be robbers took out a gun and fired shots at them, before one of the residents returned fire."The victims of the attempted robbery were all uninjured, but the three attempted robbery suspects were all shot during the exchange of gunfire and succumbed to their injuries, one on scene and two at a local hospital after being transported," the sheriff's department said in a press release. One neighbor told CNN affiliate 887
