Losing a child to an undiagnosed heart condition is, in so many words, heartbreaking. But doctors may be close to preventing one type of heart disease before it even starts. It's giving hope to families fighting to overcome tragedy.Lisa Pardington's son Max was training for an Iron Man competition the day she last heard his voice."I called after he had worked out and he said, 'Mom my heart is racing,'" Pardington remembers. "And those words changed my life forever."That night Max went to sleep and never woke up."It's the worst day," Pardington says. "It's every parent's nightmare and we are living it every day."Max had cardiomyopathy, a disease in which the heart muscle is abnormally enlarged, thickened or stiffened. It's often genetic and is the most common cause of sudden death in young athletes."He played all kinds of sports but never did we know that Max had a heart condition until he passed away," Pardington says.Since most school physicals don't check for it, Beaumont Health organized a free Student Heart Check where doctors and volunteers are screening teens for the disease, before it's too late."It makes you feel good about what you do because I know we have saved lives coming to these events," says Beaumont cardiologist Dr. Steven Almany.Lori Herbert lost her son Anthony to the disease, and decided to become active in the program."I know if he could he would want us to save lives," Herbert says. "Not a minute goes by that I don't think of him."Anthony was a member of the Northern Michigan University football team when he passed away."He had just come back from conditioning that morning, went to breakfast and then went back to his dorm with his roommate and was going to watch a movie before their first day of classes," Herbert says. "And that's when he became unresponsive and went into sudden cardiac arrest." First responders tried to save him but couldn't."It didn't feel real," Herbert says. "It was just a nightmare. I mean he was eight hours away from us and there was absolutely nothing we could do."Herbert says they had never heard of the screenings done at the Student Heart Check during any physicals. That's why they hope heart check events like these spread to other cities across the country. "We knew we couldn't bring Anthony back but we wanted to hopefully keep other parents from having to endure what we had to endure," Herbert says. "I'm not going to lie, I wish that we could've gotten him to a screening and still had him here with us."But what if there were a way to prevent cardiomyopathy in children in their mother's womb before it even started to develop? Doctors at the Oregon health and Science University began researching that possibility.Dr. Sanjiv Kaul worked with researchers who were able to cut out the defective gene when they fertilized an egg in a lab."Yes everybody here was surprised," says Kaul, CEO of the Knight Cardiovascular Institute. "Then the cells repaired normally by themselves. We were amazed. It's like science fiction."While it hasn't been tested in humans, Kaul says potentially all cells after that one would be free of the abnormal gene."So, theoretically, in one generation we can remove this defect from the entire generation."While there's concern this technology could be used to create so-called "designer babies," Kaul believes with regulation, the research offers hope."Talking to a parent that lost a child I would have done anything in the world to save my son's life," Pardington says.Adding one more layer to the effort to keep children healthy and alive. 3620

Microsoft said Sunday that it is "prepared to continue discussions to explore a purchase of TikTok in the United States."The announcement comes days after President Donald Trump said he was planning on banning the app, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance.Trump administration officials are concerned about the app's terms of service, citing the privacy concerns of U.S. citizens with the Chinese government."Microsoft will move quickly to pursue discussions with TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, in a matter of weeks, and in any event completing these discussions no later than September 15, 2020," Microsoft's statement read, in part. "During this process, Microsoft looks forward to continuing dialogue with the United States Government, including with the President.""The discussions with ByteDance will build upon a notification made by Microsoft and ByteDance to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). The two companies have provided notice of their intent to explore a preliminary proposal that would involve a purchase of the TikTok service in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand and would result in Microsoft owning and operating TikTok in these markets. Many of the thousands of migrants waiting to claim asylum are realizing their dream to live in America may be a tougher road than they imagined, especially following Sunday’s clash at the border, involving a group of migrants and U.S. officials.Conditions are horrid in one camp in the border city of Tijuana, Mexico, where people have been living in tents for weeks in a lot that once was a baseball complex. Many of them dream of starting a new live in the U.S., but those dreams are fading.Maria Elena Reyes waited in line for hours, hoping a volunteer may have a clean shirt. For her, these living conditions, and even the month-long journey from Honduras, all seemed worth it to get to the border. But that’s when she says she had hope of finding asylum in America.“To look for a better life, to help my grandchildren who are in Honduras and my daughters, and for myself,” Reyes says.But like others at the camp, her optimism seems to fade with each passing day in the tent city, especially after what happened Sunday, when U.S. border agents used tear gas on a group of migrants.“I would say after that incident, which was really bad, a lot of doors closed,” Reyes says.Already worn out from the long journey, many of these migrants are now fearful of the US, scared of what could happen at the border, even if they apply for asylum the legal way.Sarahi Nunes and her 3-year-old daughter, Genesis, thought getting into the US would be easier, but knowing there’s a months-long wait just for an official asylum appointment, makes her doubt whether she'll ever obtain her American dream.“Yes, at first, that was the plan,” Nunes says. “But now, I see how difficult it is for people asking for asylum.” She's already started the process of applying for a work visa to stay here, in Mexico. She says living in Mexico would still be a step up from her life in Honduras.Reyes is also hopeful she could find a job in Mexico, but she says if she doesn't in the next week, she will go back to Honduras.“It was a very hard battle to get here,” Reyes says. “I would not like to go back empty-handed.”  Reyes says she doesn’t want to give up, but knowing if she does return home, that’s what it will feel like. 2222

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer announced that a citywide curfew will be extended through the weekend as unrest in the city reignited on Wednesday.The demonstrations were sparked by a grand jury announcement that charges would not be filed against the two officers who shot and killed Breonna Taylor during a March raid.The curfew will continue from 9 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. every day through Monday. The curfew does not apply to people commuting to work, house of worship for services or seeking medical attention for themselves or others.The city has also closed some of the city’s downtown government facilities through Monday morning.On Wednesday, 127 arrests were tied to demonstrations in the city. Amid the unrest, two Louisville Metro Police officers were wounded by a gunman. A suspect, Larynzo Johnson, was arrested on Wednesday. Johnson is accused of shooting the two officers who were patrolling demonstrations in the city. 936

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel told ABC News Wednesday that additional people have been charged on a state level in connection to a kidnapping plot against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.Nessel said she couldn't go into detail on the charges at the moment.So far, 13 men have been accused in a domestic terrorism plot to kidnap Whitmer, bomb the Michigan Capitol building and harm local law enforcement.Many of the defendants appeared in court this week for preliminary hearings and bail hearings.The FBI broke open the investigation during a raid in Hartland on Oct. 7, which later revealed self-claimed militia groups from at least five U.S. cities were allegedly involved in the plot.
