SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Residents in a South San Diego Apartment complex worked together to fight a fire that started in the patio.At around 10:45 Sunday morning, San Diego City Fire Rescue teams responded to the 1700 block of Oro Vista Road. Heavy smoke was billowing from the patio of a downstairs apartment. "I called 911 automatically, and that's when the person who lives upstairs came running out,” Alexa Delgado said.Delgado had just arrived at the Oro Vista Villas to visit her mother when she saw the flames. "It started popping, and the fire started coming out,” she said. It was in that moment of chaos that she found herself and several neighbors step up to help. One neighbor pulled the smoke alarm, others smashed fire extinguisher boxes and started spraying down the patio, and she protected the neighbor's pet birds, all before the fire department arrived. Engine 30’s Fire Captain, John Wilson said what the residents did in the first minutes of the fire helped suppress the flames. "There was an alarm that was going off upon our arrival, so the smoke detectors did their jobs and got everyone out safely,” Captain Wilson said. Delgado says what happened today was a true testament to the word “community.”“A bunch of neighbors helping and asking if anyone living there, went upstairs to see if anyone was in there and helping out."Fire investigators are still looking into what exactly caused the patio fire.  No one was inside the home when the flames ignited. But to him, the most memorable birth is the one that didn't happen on his watch.Huber was helping people evacuate from the terrifying wildfire that tore through the Northern California town of Paradise on Nov. 8 when he heard on the scanner about a pregnant woman going into premature labor.Anastasia Skinner's baby wasn't due for another month, but she began to feel contractions as she grabbed her mother's two dogs and raced to escape the fast-moving blaze. The flames had already hit her car by the time she fought the panic-driven traffic jam out of town and reached a gas station, honking the horn and screaming for help."I knew I wasn't going to make it," Skinner, 25, said during a phone interview on Friday. "I called my husband and told him goodbye, tell all the kids I love them and make sure they remember me."A motorcyclist who saw Skinner in distress flagged a police officer who helped her move to the back seat of her Honda Pilot. Several women who were stuck in the traffic jam brought her blankets and pillows, A retired fire chief came to her aid and someone requested a helicopter to airlift her to the hospital.Huber, the assistant chief of operations for Butte County Emergency Services, was two miles away but had to get through 30 minutes of gridlock to get to Skinner. When he arrived and evaluated her condition, he knew she couldn't wait much longer for a helicopter."The smoke was thick, and the winds were blowing. The helicopters were having a hard time fighting the fire let alone airlifting patients," Huber said.Because Skinner was having a high-risk pregnancy after suffering two miscarriages and other complications related to an inherited disorder, Huber said she may not have made it if she went into full-blown labor.He arranged a caravan that included three police vehicles to rush Skinner to an ambulance. Then he jumped in the back seat, where he kept her calm until she reached a hospital where her labor was stopped."He was sweet. He told me, 'I'm a guy. I don't know what this feels like for you, but I'll try to help you get you through it,' " Skinner said. "Then he would yell at people outside of the car, waving his hat and telling them to get out of the way.""My goal was to keep her breathing and get her down the hill," Huber said. "Two of my ambulance crews were trapped by the fire moments before I got to Anastasia so there was a lot of doubt, a lot of worry."Skinner said a doctor later told her smoke inhalation put her body under stress and triggered the contractions.On Dec. 12, more than a month after the fire began, Skinner gave birth via C-section to a full-term, healthy girl and named her after the man she believes saved her life."She's a blessing in every way including what happened at the Camp Fire," she said about her daughter, Zoele (rhymes with Noel) Mickey Skinner.Skinner and her husband, Daniel, have three other children, ages 8, 6 and 4.After getting Skinner to the ambulance, Huber helped with the mass evacuation until the next day. He said he was shocked and honored when he learned the baby was named after him."That day was full of a thousand different emotions but that is the strongest memory of the day for me," Huber said.More than 50,000 people in Paradise and the neighboring communities of Magalia and Concow were forced to quickly flee the towering, wind-driven flames that burned an area about the size of Chicago — 240 square miles (622 square kilometers) — and became the deadliest U.S. wildfire in at least a century. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- One month after the deadly bluff collapse in Encinitas, the husband of one of the victims is speaking out for the very first time. Dr. Pat Davis is a well-known dentist in the community. He lost his wife, daughter, and sister-in-law in that tragic collapse. Davis says he’s still in a state of healing. But despite the pain of losing his family members, he is now urging local leaders to come up with a plan, so no family has to go through this again. “It’s a terrible thing to experience,” says Davis. “I can’t think of a worse situation that could of happened to me as a family man.”The Davis family was out for a day at the beach back on August 2nd. Davis’ wife Julie, daughter Annie Clave and Sister-in-law Elizabeth Davis were sitting under the cliff when it gave out, killing all three women. “People in my family have been down to Grandview beach a thousand times, over the last 25 years,” says Davis. “We’ve never looked at it as being a place that was really dangerous.”Annie Clave’s friend, Tiffany Rogers, was also at the beach that day. She held back tears describing her three friends. ““Three extraordinary women who had just everything, just beautiful, so beautiful on the inside,” says Rogers. As part of healing, Dr. Davis says his new purpose in life is to find a solution to stabilize the bluffs. He supports options like cutting off some access to the beach, sand replenishment, or putting a barrier wall along the cliffs. Just this past weekend, there have been two more bluff collapses, in Encinitas and Torrey Pines State Beach. A couple of weeks ago, Davis made a passionate plea before the Encinitas City Council to take action. Thursday afternoon, he shared his concerns with Congressman Mike Levin who is fighting to get federal funding to shore up the bluffs. “It’s not a question of if this is going to happen. It’s when it’s going to happen again,” says Davis. “All you have to do is go walk along our beaches up here; you see cliffs that look like they could fall at any time.” 2034
