SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new monolith was supposed to be unveiled at a Scripps Ranch shopping center on Wednesday, but it was found destroyed hours before the introduction ceremony.Several weeks ago, a mysterious monolith appeared at the Scripps Ranch Marketplace, attracting crowds and raising questions like where it came from and who put it there. However, several days later, the monolith was removed by a group of teenagers. The theft of the monolith was disappointing for many, including Nutmeg Bakery & Café co-owner Drew Hoffus. He told ABC 10News that his business not only had a first-class view of the monolith, but it helped bring in customers.“This year has been a challenge for everyone … The landmarks helped us out a lot. Our business was struggling this year,” Hoffus said.RELATED STORIES:Mysterious monolith removed from San Diego parking lotMonolith appears at San Diego County shopping centerOther people ABC 10News spoke to said it was unofficially named the “monolith of hope” because visitors and residents would touch it and take pictures with it, but it also brought them a sense of joy. After the group of teens stole the monolith, management at the shopping center decided to replace it.The unveiling was set for Wednesday morning, but overnight, the structure was wrecked.“The plaque we had made speaks to dedicating the monolith to the community, to the local businesses that helped us get through this crazy year. For someone to tear it town, before it’s unveiled, it’s a little frustrating, almost sickening …,” said Hoffus.Police are looking into surveillance footage as part their investigation.Anyone with information on this incident is asked to come forward. 1700

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Navy sailor is under investigation in connection with the fire that caused extensive damage to the USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego, sources told ABC 10News.Multiple sources with close ties to Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) told ABC 10News that investigators determined the July 12 fire may have been set intentionally. Investigators identified a sailor as an arson suspect in their probe, sources said. The sources added multiple search warrants were executed at the sailor’s home and property. The sailor’s name and rank were not disclosed. On Tuesday, a Navy spokesperson told ABC 10News that NCIS requested help from the National Response Team for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) because the agency provides resources and expertise on complex, large-scale incidents like the massive ship fire.A Navy spokesperson on Wednesday declined to confirm what sources told ABC 10News regarding the suspect and now-arson investigation. However, the spokesperson said, “The investigations are ongoing and there is nothing new to announce on their current status or findings.”The fire erupted on the morning of July 12 in a storage area aboard the vessel, sending thick smoke over the San Diego Bay that was visible for miles.Over the course of four days, thousands of helicopter water drops were conducted to aid firefighters on the ground.Dozens of sailors and firefighters sustained minor injuries during the firefighting effort.By the fourth day of the battle, crews were able to knock down all known fires aboard the ship.It remains unclear if the damage caused by the fire will prevent the USS Bonhomme Richard from sailing again.RELATED COVERAGE:Regulators say smoke from ship fire not a health riskNavy Admiral meets, thanks sailors who put out ship fireNavy ship fire causing air quality problems in San DiegoTwo sailors who battled ship fire test positive for coronavirusNavy officials say all known fires aboard USS Bonhomme Richard are out 2025

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A measure that would increase property tax bills to pay for thousands of affordable housing units has moved closer to the November ballot. On Tuesday, the San Diego City Council voted 6-3 to support what's called a resolution of necessity about the measure. It directed city staff to prepare language for the council to approve for the November ballot. The San Diego Housing Federation, which brought the measure forward, says it would pave the way for an estimated 7,500 affordable housing units. Of those, 5,000 would be for the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless, while another 2,500 would be for low-wage working families. RELATED: Father Joe's Villages breaks ground on affordable housing project in South Bay"This is a solution to homelessness on the scale of the problem that's in front of us," said Stephen Russell, who heads the federation. "Our hearts say we need to do this and frankly it is cheaper to put people in housing than it is to flood them with emergency services."The proposal would raise property taxes on average 19 cents per ,000 of assessed value, taking a gradual approach over about seven years. Once it is fully in place, an owner of a median priced home of 0,000 would pay an average of about 0 per year. The measure would require a two-thirds majority vote. RELATED: Renting is cheaper than buying a home, study showsThe council heard more than 90 minutes of supportive testimony, but outside the reception was more lukewarm. James Douglas, a downtown resident, said something needs to be done to help the homeless, but he lamented his own high rent. "I was paying 0 for a two-bedroom and living room, kitchen, front yard backyard out towards the San Bernardino area," He said. "Here I got a studio for ,000. It's not even worth it."The six Democrats on the council supported the measure. The two Republicans and independent voted no. 1917

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A longtime North Park business has been forced to shutter its doors due to the economic toll of the pandemic.A&B Sporting Goods has sat on University Ave. for 79 years. The business told ABC 10News that it thrives off of local youth sports, which have largely been canceled this year due to the coronavirus.Owner Greg Schloss, whose father and grandfather worked at the store before him, said he hadn't planned on closing shop, but could not keep the business going any longer."I've worked here 40 years. The neighborhood is driven by a lot of kids playing ball in this neigborhood. And at the moment, for the past sever, eight, nine months, there's no kids playing any organized sports," Schloss said.RELATED: Rebound: Find resources for small businesses amid the pandemicAs for himself, Schloss said he's not ready to retire and he's hoping some of his longtime customers may be able to help him find a new job.In a Facebook post, the shop told fans they will close as of the end of the year and thanked the community for its support over nearly eight decades."It is with heavy heart that we announce that A&B Sporting Goods is closing shop as of the end of the year. We cannot thank our friends enough for your ongoing support. We were so fortunate to be part of the North Park community for so many decades. There was never anything better than your kids coming in every year to pick up their North Park Little League apparel and equipment," a Facebook post on the store's site read. Shoppers are also encouraged to stop in and shop over the next month. The store's social post added that everything will be sold and reasonable offers for merchandise will be accepted. 1707
