SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) -- Dozens of people gathered in front of a post office in Solan Beach Tuesday morning with signs in hand, pushing for the protection of the U.S. Postal Service.Tina Zucker, one of the organizers of the rally, said, “I just would like our country to have a postal service that works and to have a government with people who support it and don’t take it into our political realm.”As a succulent grower, Zucker has relied on the postal service for the last 15 years. She said there’s been a noticeable delay in delivery times. This comes as the U.S. Postal Service had announced the removal of hundreds of mail processing machines across the country and warned 46 states it may not be able to process all mail-in ballots in time to be counted for the election.“This has to get handled. You know, it’s America. This is the United States of America. We are bigger and better than the way things are going. And with the pandemic, we have to be able to vote with ballots. We need to be able to mail in our ballots with confidence,” Zucker said.At around the same time the rally was held in front of the location on South Sierra Avenue, the U.S. Postmaster General announced those changes won’t happen until after the election to reassure people that the postal service can handle mail in voting.Organizers said though there weren’t big crowds of people at this rally, they felt it was important to voice out their concerns and let the employees of the postal service know they support them.Susana Arnold, one of the organizers, added, “It’s really about if you see something that’s not right, you say something.” 1640
So far this year, 13 law enforcement officers across the United States have died after they were shot in the line of duty.Six of them died in just one week, said Craig Floyd with the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. The group recorded 12 firearms-related deaths in 2018 as of Tuesday, but an officer in Mobile, Alabama, was shot and killed late that night -- which would bring the grim toll to 13. 432

Southwest Airlines will look less like a zoo.Passengers will be allowed to bring only cats and dogs on board as emotional support animals beginning in September, and only one per customer. The animals must be on a leash or in a carrier at all times.Southwest says passengers will need to present a letter from a doctor or licensed mental health professional on the day of departure. The airline will also limit the types of trained service animals in the cabin. Only dogs, cats and miniature horses will be allowed. Service animals are specially trained to help people with disabilities.Fliers have become increasingly bold in bringing animals on planes. In January, a woman reportedly tried to board a United Airlines flight with an emotional support peacock. Delta says passengers have also flown with "comfort turkeys, gliding possums known as sugar gliders, snakes, spiders and more."Since the beginning of the year, American Airlines, JetBlue, Delta and United have all introduced rules similar to Southwest's.The airline industry has called on the Transportation Department to update its guidelines for animals on planes. A public comment period for changes closed in July. 1185
Starbucks is exchanging its iconic green straws for recyclable strawless lids. The newer tops were modeled after the lids the coffee company has used on their hot drinks. They will have a drinking spout and contain about 9% "less plastic than the flat lid and straw historically used for iced beverages."“We developed and trialed several prototypes to arrive at this milestone,” said Andy Corlett, director of global packaging solutions and innovations, in a press release. “A recyclable, strawless lid becoming the standard for iced drinks is one small way we can give more than we take from the planet. This is a significant moment for Starbucks as we work to reduce waste and safeguard the environment.”Corlett and his team helped design the lid, the company said.Drinks with whipped cream and blended drinks, like frappuccinos, will still come with a domed lid and straw. The company plans to reduce 50% of waste by 2030.Lids will be rolled out to stores in the US and Canada in the coming year, the company said.Straws will still be available upon request, the company said. 1084
