BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met with President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama here on Saturday, who are here to attend the second trilateral leaders' meeting.     Hailing the progress of China's relations with the two countries, Hu said China is ready to make joint efforts with Japan and the ROK to implement consensus, boost healthy development of China-ROK strategic cooperative partnership and China-Japan strategic mutually-beneficial ties.     The substantial cooperation between China and the two countries in various areas had been further expanded, he said.     Hu congratulated the success of the second trilateral leaders' meeting held in Beijing on Saturday, calling on the three nations to seize historical opportunities to further strengthen strategic trust, respect respective major interests and concerns, and make concerted efforts for mutual benefits and common development.     The Chinese president hopes the three countries to facilitate east Asian cooperation and jointly respond to regional hot issues and global challenges to unveil a new chapter for peace, cooperation and development of east Asia. BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Wednesday chaired a meeting on the national pollution survey and urged more efforts to protect environment.     China launched its latest nationwide pollution survey at the end of 2006.     Li said further work should be done to boost environmental protection and tackle serious pollution problems to boost sustainable development in China and improve people's living standards and quality. HAIKOU, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The bodies of two people were retrieved in south China's island province of Hainan on Monday, bringing the death toll from the tropical storm Goni to five, local officials said.     The fourth was a fisherman who was killed when the fishing boat "Qiongdanzhou 00301" was wrecked at the Yangpu Port, while the fifth one, a fisherwoman, died after "Qiongdanzhou 52153" sank near Danzhou City, officials said.     Another two fishermen on "Qiongdanzhou 00301" and "Qiongdanzhou 00878", as well as four crew members on a Cambodian vessel are still missing, said an official with the Hainan marine search and rescue center.     The difficulty of rescue has increased as the provincial meteorologic center warned of continuous thunderstorms in northwestern Hainan in the following 24 hours, he said.     More than 1.6 million people in Hainan Province were affected by Goni, which forced local authorities to relocate 92,000, officials said.     It toppled more than 575 houses and damaged 2,311, as well as inundated 68,000 hectares of cropland, he said.     Goni landed in Hainan Wednesday and left China at 5 p.m. Sunday.

WASHINGTON, July 29 (Xinhua) -- The cooperation between the United States and China has never been so important as it is now, and the just-concluded U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) has provided a platform to reinforce common interests, a senior U.S. official has said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.     "We have broadened the dialogue ... and the S&ED is a new approach towards the U.S.-and-China relations," David Loevinger, Treasury executive secretary and senior coordinator for China Affairs and the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue, told Xinhua on Tuesday night.     "There was a common understanding that U.S.-China cooperation and engagement on economic issues have never been so important because of the challenges that we face in the global economy and global financial market right now," said Loevinger.     He said he was struck by the fact that both sides have so much in common in the discussion.     "The U.S. and China have a very similar outlook on the global economy and adopted very similar policy response," said Loevinger, once a Treasury Department's Financial Attache in China. "Both U.S. and China act very quickly and aggressively on global economic crisis."     "The monetary and fiscal stimulus in both countries was among the most aggressive and most far-reaching of any major economy," he also noted.     However, during the dialogue, China also expressed its concern over the security of its heavy investment. So far, China has invested more than 1.5 trillion dollars in the United States government-issued securities.     "We are deeply concerned about the security of our financial assets in the United States," Zhu Guangyao, China's assistant finance minister, told Xinhua.     Wang Qishan, Chinese vice premier and co-chair of the S&ED, also urged the United States to protect China's assets during the dialogue.     Loevinger indicated that the United States understands China's concern and explained to the Chinese side the U.S. monetary and fiscal policies during the two-day dialogue, which ended on Tuesday.     "(Federal Reserve) Chairman Bernanke talked about the Federal Reserve's approach to U.S. monetary policy," Loevinger said, referring to an op-ed Bernanke published last week in the Wall Street Journal, in which he talked about tightening monetary policy to prevent the emergence of an inflation once economic recovery is assured.     "Bernanke discussed many of these issues with China," he added.
