NANNING, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Sunday that China's financial institutions have generally increased their strength, profitability and risk-resisting ability, and the financial system as a whole is sound and safe in face of the international financial crisis.     Wen made the remarks during an inspection tour to Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwest China. As a result, the country's economy has maintained its momentum of smooth and rapid development, Wen said.     Generally speaking, China's economic foundations have not changed and the economy is developing towards the preset macro control targets, said the Premier.     "We have full confidence in China's economic development and financial stability," Wen said, stressing that the most important thing is to do our own business well, maintain the stability of the economy and the financial and capital markets.     "It is the biggest contribution to the world when a big country with a population of 1.3 billion is able to maintain a lasting, smooth and fast economic development," he said.     On Saturday and Sunday, Wen inspected villages and factories in the cities of Beihai, Qinzhou and Fangchenggang, and talked with local people of different nationalities and from all walks of life.     He said that the development of Beibu Gulf should focus on technological innovation and environmental protection to build into an important zone for international and regional economic cooperation.     In Gaosha Village of Qinzhou, Wen inspected rice paddy and visited farmers' homes. BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- China and Venezuela on Wednesday inked a series of agreements on wide-ranging fields, a sign of bilateral efforts to advance their strategic partnership to a new high.     The agreements came out of the summit talks in the Great Hall of the People as Beijing rolled out the red carpet for Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.     The 12 new cooperative deals covered trade, oil, finance, education, justice, telecommunications, infrastructure, sports and cultural relics. Wu said China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, would like to maintain its friendly exchanges and cooperation with the Venezuelan legislature, boosting the overall bilateral ties.     Chavez will conclude his three-day state visit to China on Thursday.

SANYA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete on Friday pledged to make concerted effort to promote the traditional friendship and practical cooperation between the two countries.     China sees Tanzania as its all-weather cooperative partner and the healthy development of bilateral relations could be treated as a model for China's sincerity and cooperation with Africa and all developing countries, Hu told Kikwete during their talks in this southern China seaside city.     To further the bilateral all-round cooperation, Hu proposed the two countries strengthen political trust, keep high-level contacts and dialogues in various forms, expand mutually beneficial trade cooperation, facilitate exchanges in the areas of education, culture, sports, public health, tourism and media, and encourage contacts among local governments, social organizations, women and youth of the two countries. The relay will be held the next day before the Olympic Torch continues its global tour to Muscat of Oman.     Kikwete said the people of Tanzania and all other African countries are firmly against the attempt of some people to disrupt the Beijing Olympic Games, resolutely support the efforts of the Chinese government and people, and believe the Beijing Olympic Games will be a complete success.     Hu thanked Kikwete for this and said the China-Africa new strategic partnership marks a new development stage of China-Africa cooperation. BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Monday hailed the country's remarkable science and technology achievements since the launch of its 1978 Reform and Opening-up Drive, but he also admitted that there is "still a large gap" with the world's most advanced.     Among developing countries, China had now taken the lead regarding the general level of science and technological development, said Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.     He attributed the achievements to the full support of the Party, the nation and the hard work by Chinese scientists and technicians.     Hu made the remarks at Monday's inaugural ceremony for both the 14th Congress of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ninth Congress of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Science.
