CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A new music school is open in the South Bay, teaching kids to play instruments with a less-classical approach."We're not the little old lady down the street with a metronome," says owner Mark Sheffield. He opened the School of Rock at Otay Ranch Town Center after his wife had to drive through traffic to take their son to classes in Liberty Station."Later on that evening, I asked how did it go, did you have fun? Yes, it was a blast. He loved it. We want to do that again. But we're not. But we're not ever doing that again. It was a 45-minute drive there and an hour and a half drive back," Sheffield explains. He says opening a South Bay location gives kids in that part of the county an option to learn music in a fun, modern way."The students learn music by playing it in an environment that fosters a true enjoyment for what they're doing," he says. "They're going to want to come anyway, and hang out with friends, and they're going to end up learning."School of Rock offers lessons for kids starting at age 3, no matter the skill level. There are also classes for adults. The lessons use one-on-one instruction as well as group jam sessions. They're holding a grand opening on Saturday, February 22nd. 1244

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - There were heated moments Wednesday while a group was defending the Christopher Columbus statue at discovery park in Chula Vista.Chula Vista City Councilman John McCann, with members of the Knights of Columbus standing by his side, called for the statue to be left alone."You can't change history," he said. "We should be able to accept all groups, you can't lift one group by destroying another group.""We're here to oppose the removal of the statue," said Rene Trevino, a member of the Knights of Columbus. The statue, which has been in place for nearly three decades, has stirred up controversy in the past.Thursday the city's Human Relations Commission will vote on a resolution to not only remove the statue and change the name of discovery park, but to change Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day in Chula Vista.Last Columbus Day someone splashed red paint all over the statue, and before that someone plaque set in front of the statue was stolen."It's been a community family park and we've had opponents of Christopher Columbus use violence to vandalize and destroy the park multiple times, costing tax payers," said McCann. Many people have called the meaning behind the statue and the name of the park both painful and offensive.A woman in a car driving by the park Wednesday began shouting, "This is indigenous land, take that statue down!"She went on to say Christopher Columbus was just the beginning of an attempted assassination of Indigenous peoples. The topic caused people to clash at the park."You have these people trying to advocate for an idea that we're sick and tired of living under," said Rafael Bautista, who wants the statue removed. He was then confronted by a man who opposes the removal."What are you living under?" the man asked him. "What are you living under?"At one point Chula Vista Police officers arrived at the park, but things had settled down."Instead of trying to argue over things that happened over 500 years ago, we should be tackling today's issues," said McCann.Raeanne Herrera, a resident of Eastlake and part of the Jicarilla Apache Nation stopped by the park to offer her take."We can right the wrongs that have been done," she said. "That statue is the constant reminder of a beginning of a genocide. They tried, but they didn't."She went on to say change needs to start with education."Native American issues were never taught in school, what was I taught? Oh, that the pilgrims and Indians got together and shared a meal. That's an absolute lie, it was a celebration for a massacre that occurred," she explained. Both groups say they will continue effort to get their way, no matter what City of Chula Vista officials ultimately decide. If Thursday's resolution passes, it will head to the full city council for the final decision. 2818

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- New information from the county shows that an anonymous tip led to the inspection and eventual closure of Filippi's.According to the county, the property manager of the complex requested that the Department of Health's Vector Control Program provide a consultation on rodent activity at the complex. After completing the inspection of the building's exterior, inspectors reportedly found a small amount of rodent droppings near the dumpster areas behind the complex. RELATED: Filippi's pizza restaurant in Eastlake Chula Vista closes for good after vermin infestation reportIn February of 2018, the county says inspectors received an anonymous complaint regarding rodents inside Filippi's. The restaurant received a primary inspection report on April 18 showing that an inspector found 20 dried rodent droppings in a back oven and rodent nests in the panels of two ovens. The inspector also reportedly found rodent droppings in utensil storage areas, beneath a stove and in dry storage areas. The report shows that there were several holes in an exterior wall and a door leading to the outdoor trash area. A second inspection was conducted a second day which found six dried mouse droppings and two fresh rat droppings in a dry storage area. Dried urine was also found on plastic wrapper of cardboard pizza boxes and gnaw marks through plastic into boxes, according to the report.  1474

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Several Chula Vista elementary schools are working to give students hands-on engineering experience the district says they can take into the job market. On August 1, 2016, a new type of learning burst into being with the start of the Innovation and Energy Station in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. The station helps teach students STEM. The station serves sixth grade students as well as serving as a community lab. In 2018, the lab grew again to include the Energy Station at Saburo Muraoka Elementary School. In August of this year, the program grew yet again to include the Hydro Station, which teaches students about the water industry. The lab begins by helping students identify which careers align with their interests while highlighting jobs in San Diego’s priority sectors. “It was designed to give students the opportunity to learn about their own strengths," Michael Bruder, District engineering teacher told 10News. “The students’ eyes light up when they see the lab space. You get the ‘Wow’ effect. You literally hear the students say ‘Wow!’ as they enter,” Bruder continued. At the Energy Station, students use Minecraft to create an energy efficient home and/or landscape. Students exploring other themes could be testing wind turbines or building circuits. The program also offers students a connection with local employers, giving them the chance to connect their hands-on experience and the region’s in-demand skills. Qualcomm, Microsoft, SDG&E, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the National Electrical Contractors Association all partner with the program. “I want employers to realize that career education must start before high school,” says Matthew Tessier, assistant superintendent of innovation and instruction at CVESD. “We’d love to partner with more people and expand to every single priority sector.”Click here to learn more about the program. 1950

Chinese spacecraft Tiangong-1 is tumbling out of orbit above Earth, and is expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere uncontrolled this weekend, the European Space Agency said. The spacecraft will re-enter Earth's atmosphere between Saturday morning and Monday morning. Tiangong-1 was at orbit roughly 200 miles above Earth after it launched in 2011. Slight atmospheric drag causes spacecrafts to decay in their altitude. As a result, spacecrafts have to conduct regular ‘reboost maneuvers’ to maintain their orbit, the European Space Agency said. Since December 2015, controllers on the ground have been unable to perform such maneuvers to keep it in orbit. Originally the plan was to control its re-entry to direct the craft into an unpopulated section of Earth. With no one able to control the spacecraft, it will tumble to the Earth somewhere between 43 degrees north and 43 south latitude. While that means much of the United States could be impacted by the falling spacecraft the size of a school bus, the European Space Agency projects that much, but not all, of the craft will break apart in the Earth's atmosphere. “Owing to the geometry of the station’s orbit, we can already exclude the possibility that any fragments will fall over any spot further north than 43oN or further south than 43oS,” says Holger Krag, Head of ESA’s Space Debris Office. The European Space Agency will be providing updates as it better projects when and where the spacecraft tumbles out of space and back to Earth.  1547
