BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health has said it will draw upon its experience from the H1N1 flu control to ensure prevention of the general flu, as the World Health Organization (WHO) announced plans for the post-pandemic period."Based on the experience from A/H1N1 prevention and control, we will revise emergency plans and will continue flu prevention efforts in a bid to ensure people's health," said a statement released late Tuesday by the ministry.Figures from the ministry show that the weekly new A/H1N1 cases have remained below 30 since mid-April. Further, no deaths have been reported for 12 consecutive weeks. While announcing the coming of the post-pandemic period, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan warned that the A/H1N1 virus will continue to spread as a seasonal flu for some years.Chan urged health authorities to maintain alert for the virus. So far, about 800 deaths from A/H1N1 influenza had been reported in China, Health Minister Chen Zhu said earlier.More than 100 million Chinese have been vaccinated against A/H1N1 flu as of May 14.The A/H1N1 virus was first identified in Mexico in April 2009. More than 211 countries and regions have reported laboratory confirmed cases of the flu, including more than 18,000 deaths.

NANJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- The population of China, the world's most populous country, is projected to reach 1.39 billion by the end of 2015, with those age 60 or over topping 200 million people, said Li Bin, head of the country's top population policy agency.Li, director of the National Population and Family Planning Commission, released these estimates Saturday during a speech at the annual conference of the China Population Association in Nanjing, capital city of east China's Jiangsu Province. The urban population is projected to be over 700 million over the next five years, for the first time exceeding the rural population, according to Li.She said the increase in the next five years would be based upon the nation's population momentum, which, according to her, would begin to decline after 2015.Population momentum is the tendency of a highly fertile population that has been rapidly increasing in size to continue to do so for decades after the onset of even a substantial decline in fertility.Chinese government statistics show China's population stood at 1.32 billion at the end of 2008, which was about 2.5 times the number in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded. To put a hold on the fast growth, the Chinese government adopted a one-child policy in the late 1970s. The policy had helped China's total population increase less than 40 percent between 1978 and 2008, whereas it nearly doubled between 1949 and 1978.However, during the next five years the development of China's population is expected to go through major transitional changes, Li said.China's first boom in its aging population is expected in the next five years, with roughly an average of eight million people turning 60 each year, 3.2 million more than occurred between 2006 and 2010, she said.In the coming five years, the ratio of the population aged 15 to 59 would peak and then slowly fall, whereas the population dependency ratio, a measure of the proportion of the population too young or too old to work, would rise for the first time after over 40 years of decreasing. In general, China would still retain the advantage of a plentiful labor supply and a relatively low population dependency ratio, she said.

BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said Sunday that China encouraged women employed in science and technology to contribute more to the country's modernization, social progress and the rejuvenation of the Chinese people.Xi made the remarks in his address at the opening ceremony of the 4th General Assembly and International Conference of the Third World Organization for Women in Science (TWOWS), which opened in Beijing on Sunday.Established in 1989, the TWOWS is the first international forum bringing together women scientists from the South with the objective of strengthening their role in the development process and promoting their representation in scientific and technological leadership. In implementing the programs for mid- and long-term scientific and technological development, as well as human resource development, China would work to build a large, high-quality force of women working in science and technology, Xi said.As the world's largest developing country, China maintains to its basic state policy of promoting gender equality and attaches importance to creating more opportunities for the fostering and career development of Chinese women in science, he said,"Two-fifths of China's 35 million scientific and technologic personnel, and one-third of those personnel in senior professional ranks, are women," Xi noted.

BEIJING, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has said the transformation of the country's economic growth pattern is a significant change for the country that needs "new ideas and innovative approaches.""The transformation of the economic growth pattern is a comprehensive and profound change, and it involves new ideas and innovative approaches. We must accelerate reform and opening-up in order to achieve it," Li said at a meeting of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) to solicit proposals for the country's 12th five-year (2011-2015) plan.Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that the transformation is essential for the sustainable development of the country's economy."Currently, the country's economic development is at a new starting point. In the new situation, we must seize opportunities and walk forward against various difficulties to consolidate the good momentum for economic recovery..." he said. The four-day meeting, starting Tuesday, was presided over by the country's top political advisor, Jia Qinglin.Jia urged all CPPCC members to contribute to the making of the five-year plan with valuable proposals on key issues.

XIAMEN, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland and Taiwan have come closer to signing a comprehensive economic pact as "substantial progress" has been made in negotiations, the mainland's chief Taiwan affairs official said on Sunday.Speaking at a centerpiece conference of the week-long Straits Forum held in the southeastern city of Xiamen, Director of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, Wang Yi, said the progress in talks on the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) is a result of joint endeavors and shall be honored by both sides. The two sides discussed the main contents of the pact and items of the goods and services to be included in the "early harvest program" at the third round of expert-level talks in Beijing last week. The Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) represented both sides during the negotiations. Two previous talks were held in Beijing and Taipei earlier this year. The ECFA is intended to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties and bring the two economies closer, the pact's initiators said. Its "early harvest program" will cover certain industries to first benefit from tariff reductions.
