XINING, April 25 (Xinhua) -- China's health authorities have stepped up measures in preventing epidemics in northwest China's Qinghai Province where at least 2,192 people died since the April 14 quake, the provincial government said Sunday.More than 400 people are working to prevent epidemics. They are monitoring infectious diseases, water quality and food safety. SHANGHAI, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Environment authorities in Shanghai will ban burning waste straw in the suburban agricultural areas to ensure air quality during the World Expo period.The Shanghai Municipal Environment Protection Bureau will use satellite remote sensing to monitor the burning of waste straw during the Expo period from May 1 to Oct. 31, the bureau said in a statement Saturday.Statistics show that about 170,000 hectares of barley, wheat, paddy and rape are planted in the suburban agricultural areas of Shanghai, which can produce up to 1.3 million tonnes of waste straw every year, according to the bureau.Burning waste straw will produce carbon dioxide and other pollutants to pollute the air, it said.To help dispose of the waste straw, more than 40 organic fertilizer plants in Shanghai have planned to use more straw as auxiliary material in fertilizer production, the bureau said.The Shanghai World Expo, with the theme of "Better City, Better Life," is expected to draw 70 million visitors from around the world during the six-month period.

BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- China's centrally-administered state-owned enterprises (SOEs) raked in a combined profit of 325.99 billion yuan (47.7 billion U.S. dollars) in the first four months of the year, the industry authorities announced here Wednesday.The profit figure in the January-April period represents 81.7 percent growth year on year, the State-Owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) said in a statement on its website.Centrally controlled SOE's combined operating revenue hit 4.89 trillion yuan in the period, up 50.4 percent year on year, the statement said.While the statement did not specify the reasons for the profit and revenue increases, experts from the SASAC research center attributed the surge to last year's low comparison basis when Chinese firms were hit hard by the global economic downturn.There are currently 126 centrally-administered SOEs under the SASAC.

BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China's top quality supervisor said Monday that Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co. has started a recall of 236,643 Focus cars over a problem that caused vehicles to stall.The recall covered vehicles manufactured from August 18, 2008, to May 28 this year by the joint venture owned by Ford, Chongqing-based Changan Automobile and Mazda Motor Corp., the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement on its website.The company posted a similar statement on its website Monday, saying the recall came after several customers complained about stalling when the car was moving at low speeds, which was because of the engine software.Both statements said the company would provide the customers with updated engine software free of charge.
