This week's series of earthquakes served as a reminder that the United States' earthquake risk extends far beyond the Pacific Coast. On Tuesday, Puerto Rico was rocked by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake. It turns out that areas of Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Illinois and South Carolina.USGS scientist David Schwartz agrees that the Pacific Northwest all the way to Charleston, S.C., practically every region of the United States, has a risk of feeling a devastating earthquake."The nature of the crust changes as you go from east to west. The Central and Eastern US, the crust is really old, it is older it is colder, it is denser, than the crust in the west which is younger,” Schwartz said. “It’s broken up by many faults and warmer. These different crusts transmit seismic waves differently.”And this difference in geology means that a strong earthquake in the Eastern United States could cause damage over an extensive area.Although the Eastern United States has not had many major earthquakes in the last century, two of the most powerful quakes in American history have happened east of the Rockies. The magnitude 5.8 earthquake that caused damage to the Washington Monument in 2011 is only a minor example of the kind of earthquakes the Eastern United States could see.In 1811 and 1812, a series of earthquakes struck the Mississippi River valley along the New Madrid fault. The strongest of the quakes was a possible magnitude 7.8. The quake was felt across much of the Eastern United States.In 1866, a magnitude 7.0 rattled Charleston, S.C.“A repeat of any of those earthquakes would be extremely damaging, because the housing stock in the Central and Eastern U.S. has not been designed for earthquakes,” Schwartz said.According to a survey funded by the U.S. Army, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake located along the New Madrid fault could cause 85,900 deaths and 8 billion in damage. TOKYO, Japan – The prime minister of Japan has lifted a coronavirus state of emergency in Tokyo and the four other remaining areas in the country, ending the restrictions nationwide as businesses begin to reopen.Experts on a special government panel have approved a plan to remove the state of emergency from Tokyo and neighboring Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama prefectures, and in Hokkaido to the north, which had more cases and remained under the emergency declaration after it was removed in most of Japan earlier this month.The state of emergency lasted for more than a month and a half.Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said lifting of the emergency does not mean the end of the pandemic. Biden’s campaign has struggled to raise money to have the sort of advertising that Bloomberg and Sanders have. But with several major endorsements, Biden has seen his share of free advertising through news reports and buzz around the campaign. Bloomberg’s entrySuper Tuesday marks the first time Bloomberg will be competing for votes. He has spent some of his fortune to put his message before voters. For instance, on Sunday during primetime, he took out advertising on several major networks to talk about the coronavirus. He also purchased ad time during the Super Bowl. But Bloomberg also did not see much of a boost coming out of two debates, his first of which involved attacks from Warren about his handling of non-disclosure agreements with his employees. What polling saysRecent polls have Sanders ahead nationally, and in leading in many Super Tuesday states including Texas and California. A caveat though is those polls were conducted before Saturday, and how Buttigieg, Klobuchar and Steyer voters sway could determine who wins the majority of delegates on Super Tuesday. How it could play outSuper Tuesday could give some clarity as to whether the race will be decided during the primary season, or at the Democratic National Convention in July. A candidate is required to win 1991 pledged delegates going into the convention. Failure to win a majority of delegates will result in hundreds of so-called “Super Delegates” to cast a ballot during a second round of voting. How likely of a scenario is a brokered convention? Election forecast site 538 gives the odds of a brokered convention at 2 out of 3. But the site also gives both Sanders and Biden a one in six chance to win the nomination outright. Why 15% matters?In order to gain delegates from a state, earning 15% of the vote is the minimum threshold. But along with the sweets and the sweaters, comes a third "S" — stress.“I definitely get stressed when I’m shopping, just to make sure everyone will like the gift I give them,” one woman said while shopping at a local market in Denver."I think family stresses families out,” Christina Critchell said.Holiday stress is a real problem for a lot of people.“I decided just this week that part of it is trying to juggle everybody’s different expectations,” Sarah Twiss said.A survey from Healthline found around 62% of people experience some level of stress during the holidays. Only 10% said they’re not stressed at all.“Everybody’s looking for a perfect Christmas,” said Dr. Ira Dauber, a physician at South Denver Cardiology. “It’s very stressful, nobody wants to ruin anybody else’s good time.”That stress can take a toll. “There’s a peak of heart attacks Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Day,” Dauber said. He helps patients with a variety of heart issues.“There’s more than one medical study that says there is such a thing as a 'holiday heart attack,' ” Dauber said.’’ In one study by the American Heart Association, researchers found a 4.2% increase in heart-related deaths between December 25 and January 7."Another study by the British Medical Journal found the highest risk for heart attack is on Christmas Eve.“What causes the spike in holiday heart attacks is really a hard thing to know,” Dauber said. “A lot of the theory is it's a stressful time of year.”The theories on why this happens changes depending on the doctor you talk to.“The short answer is yes, stress can be a factor in heart attacks,” said Dr. David Avner, an emergency medicine physician at UCHealth Broomfield Hospital.He said a lot of other factors also contribute to this spike, like traveling more around the holidays, forgetting medications — like blood pressure pills — at home, or simply not speaking up when you don’t feel well.“You might not want to interrupt the festivities and say, you know, I’m having some chest discomfort,” Avner said. “You don’t want to be shy about letting family and friends know.”There are ways to lower your risk, too. He said monitoring your diet, avoiding fatty foods and making sure you’re taking your medications regularly will help.“You need to be aware of what your body normally can do and any changes to that,” he said. “Heart attacks announce themselves very differently in different people.”There are also ways to keep your stress at bay.“It’s going to be different for different people, so if you go to a spa and that helps you feel relaxed, that’s gonna help," Avner said.
