TRINITY, Fla. — Family and friends of a man who recently suffered a fractured skull are speaking out about delays in care from a Florida hospital they believe made his condition worse.On what was supposed to be a fun night playing softball, Donnie Smith's life changed forever.Smith had just thrown a pitch, when a line drive hit him in the head.“Donnie went immediately to the ground,” said teammate Bryan Williams. “Blood was coming out of his nose. You could already see the swelling.”At that point, they knew it was bad.  Another teammate took him to the nearest emergency room, which was at Medical Center of Trinity, about two miles south of the ballpark.  Donnie got to Trinity at 7:46 p.m. local time“You figure a hospital is a hospital. It's there to take care of emergencies,” said teammate Jimmy Sigmone.But not all emergency rooms can handle all emergencies, as Smith's sister Patti Dermer was about to learn.By the time she arrived, a CT scan showed his injury was potentially life-threatening.By 8:20 p.m., they knew he had a fractured skull and a brain bleed.But doctors at Trinity couldn't perform emergency surgery to relieve the pressure.At 9:16 p.m., a doctor signed a transfer order, and a surgical team was placed on stand-by 13 miles away at the Bayonet Point Trauma Center.“There were ambulances sitting outside the door, and they wouldn't put him in it,” said Deremer.As seconds and minutes ticked by, Smith's condition worsened.“He's going gray, sweating profusely, chills everywhere,” Deremer said.She said she was alone with him in an ER Bay for most of the time they were waiting.He was given an ice pack to hold on his head.  By 10 o'clock, Donnie’s heart rate dropped to under 40 beats a minute.“He wound up throwing up blood all over the room. Blood started gushing out of his nose,” Dermer said.Records indicate the ER staff had called for a helicopter, but it couldn't fly due to weather conditions. “It was the longest night of my life,” Deremer said. “Literally, I was out there screaming at people.”By 10:20 p.m., Donnie’s blood pressure spiked and his pulse was dropping.The ER team rushed him to another room and put him to sleep.  Records show that finally at 10:21 p.m., the first call from Trinity was made to Pasco County EMS for an ambulance.It was two-and-a-half hours after Donnie first arrived at Trinity and more than an hour after a doctor signed the transfer order.Donnie finally got to Bayonet Point at 11:25 p.m., four hours after the softball fractured his skull.Friends wish they'd called 911 from the ball field, so paramedics would have taken him where he needed to go the first time.“You can point a million fingers. Two students were taken into custody after they set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for ammunition to "shoot up" Combs High School in San Tan Valley, Arizona, according to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office. Last week, deputies responded to the school for a report of a threat.According to PCSO, a student reported to school officials that they had overheard two students talking about bringing a gun to school. Deputies say a 15-year-old student had threatened to file off the serial number of a gun and bring it to campus. A second student reportedly helped the 15-year-old set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for ammunition. "The site explained that ammunition was expensive and they needed help to shoot up Combs High School," PCSO said in a statement. The first student did not have any weapons, but the second student did have access to weapons at his home, deputies said.The second student reportedly told deputies that he did not know who created the GoFundMe account but was there when it was created. The GoFundMe account has since been removed, deputies said. Both students were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism and interference or disruption of an education institution.  1264

But in March the company's creditors forced it to go out out of business, and the 31,000 remaining employees did not get severance payments.Some top executives at Toys "R" Us received bonuses as part of the bankruptcy process. (KGTV) - The 12-year-old survivor of a plane crash in Valley Center is praising her uncle, the pilot who died in the crash.A smiling photo of Raquel Contreras was taken moments before her uncle, Peter Bierle, a seasoned pilot, took her up in his single-engine, experimental aircraft on an early Sunday evening. They were above the home of her friend for a birthday flyover when it happened. More than two weeks after the crash, Contreras spoke to us from her hospital room. She says some neighbors got an early warning."The plane hadn't even crashed, and they were getting ready because they heard engine failure," said Contreras.RELATED: Pilot killed, 12-year-old girl badly injured in small plane crash in Valley CenterA traumatized Contreras didn't want to talk about the crash, but her family says her uncle told her to, "Get down low and hold on."Witnesses saw the plane dive toward the yard, away from buildings, before it crashed."I want to honor Uncle Peter. It's amazing what he did, and I wouldn't be here if he didn't land and crash like he did," said Contreras.Bierle died at the scene. Dozens of neighbors rushed to the plane, burning fuel nearby."Just want to thank everyone on Palomar Vista Drive ... Amazing how everyone came together in the end," Contreras said.Contreras was cut out of seat belt and rescued. That seat belt was a 4-point harness belt, courtesy of her Aunt Connie."Right before the flight, she put in a new seat belt and checked my buckle," says Contreras.The last-minute addition may have saved her life. Veterinarians are seeing an alarming increase in the number of cases of the canine parvovirus.Nationally, Blue Pearl pet hospitals report a 70 percent increase of the virus compared to statistics collected the previous five years.While an exact reason for the spike has yet to be determined, veterinarians suspect the coronavirus pandemic can shoulder some of the blame.“If people are staying home and have strict stay at home orders, probably vet visits aren’t the first thing on their minds,” said Dr. Lenore Bacek with Blue Pearl. “Financially, some people took a large hit to their normal finances during this time and routine vaccines weren’t a priority.”She added that people may be taking their newly adopted puppies to dog parks before they are fully vaccinated.Parvovirus is highly contagious because it can live on surfaces like grass or blankets for months and years.“Just assume it’s in the environment and don’t take your puppy somewhere other dogs have been,” Dr. Bacek said.Symptoms of the virus include vomiting and diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, decreased appetite, weakness and weight loss.Dogs can’t pass the virus to humans. However, the increase of parvovirus cases could mean other important vaccines are being neglected.“We worry if they are not getting parvo vaccines, are we missing things like rabies vaccines, which could have a public health implication?” Dr. Bacek said.Puppies are most at risk, but the virus can also impact adult dogs. Veterinarians recommend adults receive a booster vaccine every three years.If a dog falls ill, they can face expensive treatment.“With aggressive treatment, hospitalization, IV fluid therapy, supportive care, the survival rate is high, close to 90 percent,” Dr. Bacek said.However, the financial and emotional toll of a dog getting sick can be avoided with proper vaccines.“We want to make sure as the first wave continues and second waves comes, that vets are seen as an important factor in public health,” Dr. Bacek said.KSTU's John Franchi was first to report this story. 2051
