ORLANDO, Fla. – The Walt Disney Company is planning to lay off about 32,000 of its employees early next year.The layoffs were announced in a filing with the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Wednesday.The filing says the 32,000 workers affected are primarily in Disney’s parks, experiences and products division, and they’ll be terminated in the first half of fiscal 2021.Additionally, as of Oct. 3, about 37,000 employees who were not expecting to be terminated were placed on furlough, according to the filing.The news of the 32,000 layoffs comes about two months after Disney said it would be shedding about 28,000 jobs from its parks division in September. Officials told The Associated Press at the time that two-thirds of those layoff involved part-time workers, but they ranged from salaried employees to hourly workers.CNBC reports that the 28,000 workers are included in the 32,000 layoffs.The layoffs are a result of COVID-19's impact on Disney’s businesses and the theme park industry as a whole.“Due to the current climate, including COVID-19 impacts, and changing environment in which we are operating, the Company has generated efficiencies in its staffing, including limiting hiring to critical business roles, furloughs and reductions-in-force,” wrote Disney in its filing.As of Oct. 3, Disney says it employed about 203,000. Around 155,000 of those employees worked in the company’s parks, experiences and products segment. Officials are looking for the suspect responsible for a deadly stabbing in Phoenix.Phoenix police responded to an alley near 15th and Missouri avenues at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday for a report of a stabbing. Officers were alerted to the incident after a passerby called 911 about a man stumbling in the roadway. When officers arrived on the scene they found 58-year-old Alfred Brown with multiple stab wounds. He told officers the suspect, a younger Hispanic male, was heavy set and wearing a white shirt. According to police, Brown was transported to the hospital where he died from his injuries.Brown was a known homeless man who stayed in the area. He was last seen in the area earlier in the day with a Hispanic male who matches the suspect description.   789

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A sales tax increase approved by voters in November took effect Monday in the City of Oceanside. The city put Measure X on the ballot last fall to raise the tax rate from 7.75 to 8.25 percent. Voters passed the measure, 55 percent to 44 percent. The estimated revenues are expected to bring in million annually, according to city officials.New tax revenues, minus a state administrative fee, will go to the city. The half-cent sales tax was designed to provide money for first responders, pothole maintenance, graffiti clean-up, and public infrastructure projects. The tentative spending plan for the revenues includes an additional Homeless Outreach team, Crime Suppression team, road repairs, and a new police station at the beach."We are grateful to the Citizens of Oceanside for approving Measure X and are working to ensure that they receive tangible enhanced public safety services and infrastructure improvements," said Assistant City Manager Deanna Lorson in a statement to 10News.Measure X is set to expire in seven years. OAXACA, Mexico (KGTV) - At least 13 people were killed and 15 others were injured after a helicopter crashed while surveying damage from Mexico's 7.2-magnitude earthquake Friday.The victims, all of whom were on the ground at the time of the crash, included five women, four men, and three children, according to the Associated Press.  The Oaxaca state prosecutor's office said another victim died at a nearby hospital.The group of people had reportedly been spending the night in an open field following the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Mexico's southern state Friday, the AP reported.RELATED: 7.2-magnitude earthquake strikes southern MexicoThe helicopter was reportedly carrying Mexico’s interior minister and Oaxaca Gov. Now more than ever, the impact of not having enough minority schoolteachers is part of the conversation, with efforts focused on undoing systemic disparities.“For so long, I think people have been uncomfortable having discussions about race and how that influences not only students but teachers in a school setting, where you are learning about what society is supposed to look like,” said Eric Duncan, Senior Data and Policy Analyst at The Education Trust.Duncan is part of The Education Trust’s Education Diversity Team, a group that advocates for higher achievement of all students, particularly those of color or living in poverty.Research in Sage Journals found minority students have more favorable perceptions of minority teachers, which can translate to better academic outcomes. Yet, teachers of color make up just 20% of the workforce. Close to 40% of all schools don't have a single teacher of color.Meanwhile, racial and ethnic minority students now make up a majority of the public-school population.Schools have made gains recently hiring more teachers of color, but retention is an issue because they leave the workforce at a higher rate than white teachers. The Education Trust found that's in part due to working conditions.Minority teachers often take on additional roles outside of teaching that they are not paid or even recognized for.School culture is another significant factor.“Discipline policies that educators of color are frankly tired of seeing and our country is tired of seeing the way that students are over disciplined, are misunderstood, particularly students of color, are driven out of school, are suspended for minor misconducts,” said Duncan.The Education Trust has recommendations on how schools can retain teachers of color, starting with collecting data by race and ethnicity on recruitment, hiring and retention.
