PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — As the coronavirus continues to grip parts of South Florida, there are growing concerns over hospitalizations and the numbers of intensive care unit beds available.Last week the Sunshine State hit another grim milestone with more than 1,800 hospitalizations — the highest in a single day since the start of the pandemic, according to state records.Many hospitals are taking action against the record-setting numbers.Some hospitals in the state, including Bethesda East, Bethesda West and Boca Raton Regional Center in South Florida, are now rescheduling elective procedures that require overnight stays to help free up space.In Florida, 56 hospital ICUs have hit capacity and another 35 hospitals show ICU bed availability of 10% or less.As of Wednesday morning, many Palm Beach County hospital ICUs were reportedly near capacity.Florida Gov. Ron Desantis said hospitals are seeing more patients who are coming in for other reasons and then learning they have COVID-19. Police in Troy, Michigan said a man armed with knives was shot and killed after charging at officers on Monday morning.According to police, they were called to the home on Saddle Brook for a domestic situation just after 7 a.m. on Monday.Officers followed the suspect, a 23-year-old man, and when he noticed officers, he started charging at them. Another officer in an unmarked car got out to distract the suspect, and then the suspect tried getting in an unmarked car.Police say he then turned toward the marked vehicle and started charging at the officer. The officer pulled out his taser and fired, but the taser was not effective and he kept charging toward officers.That's when the officer shot at the suspect several times, killing him.Police said it's been over 20 years since there was an officer-involved shooting in Troy. 849

PARKLAND, Fla. — Three Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students were arrested on Tuesday in separate, unrelated incidents. The Broward County Sheriff's Office says that one student faces a misdemeanor charge for making a threat on social media.Around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, a Broward Sheriff's Office deputy responded to the school to investigate a tip and interviewed the 10th-grader about photos he shared on Snapchat. In one image, the teen displays a gun in his waistband. In a second image, he shows off bullets, according to BSO. The detective said both photos had threatening messages; one message was directed to a person named "Josh."BSO detectives found the suspect's action to have interfered with school function and disturbed the peace. The teen was subsequently hospitalized under the Baker Act for being a threat to himself.
