BEIJING, May 13 -- The proportion of China's GDP that goes toward wages has been shrinking for 22 consecutive years, a senior trade union official said on Wednesday.Zhang Jianguo, chief of the collective contracts department with the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU), also warned that low pay, long working hours and poor working conditions for millions of workers are triggering conflicts and mass incidents, which pose a grave challenge to social stability. The proportion of the country's GDP that makes up wages and salaries peaked at 56.5 percent in 1983 and dropped to 36.7 percent in 2005, Zhang said."The proportion has not changed too much since then. In contrast, the proportion of returns on capital in GDP had risen by 20 percent during the period from 1978 to 2005," Zhang said in an interview posted on the ACFTU's website. The annual average wages of workers in urban areas had increased from 12,422 yuan (,819) in 2002 to 29,229 yuan in 2008, statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics showed. However, the gap between the rich and poor has been widening in the country and is also growing between urban and rural areas, different provinces and cities, as well as in different industries, he said.About one-quarter of respondents in the latest ACFTU survey said their incomes have not increased in the past five years, while 75.2 percent of them said that current income distribution is not fair. Similarly, 61 percent of those polled said the wages of laborers were low.China developed a capital-labor negotiation system for determining wages in 1994 and it was thought to be the most effective way of increasing workers' salaries. However, "since many cadres of trade unions fail to adequately protect workers' rights, it is very difficult to promote more collective contracts to benefit more workers", Zhang said.By 2009, there were more than 1.2 million collective contracts nationwide, covering more than 2.1 million enterprises and 161 million employees.

XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 9 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in the flooded Wangjialing Coal Mine in north China's Shanxi Province rose to 25 Friday after two more bodies were found and rescuers continued the search for 13 miners still missing.About 260,000 cubic meters of water had been pumped out by Friday, two times more than expected, and rescuers were focusing on two sections where the 13 were believed trapped, Liu Dezheng, spokesman of the rescue operation, told a press conference. But the rescue was difficult as the water level had not dropped quickly enough and it was adjacent to a disused shaft full of water and toxic gas, he said.Rescuers believed the disused shaft had caused the initial flood when broken into by workers.A total of 261 miners were working below ground when the mine was flooded on March 28, and 108 miners escaped unharmed while 153 were trapped underground. On Monday, 115 miners were brought out of the mine alive after being trapped for more than a week. They are receiving medical care in five hospitals in Hejin and Taiyuan Cities, Liu said. All the 26 miners in Shanxi Aluminum Plant Hospital are allowed by doctors to be visited by their family members.A few workers told Xinhua that they are even gaining weight after more than a week of starvation."I feel better and better, more energetic today and I want to get off bed," said Liu Mingcai from Hunan, who lost ten kilograms when trapped underground.Another survivor Peng Guangzhong said "I feel much safer and is no longer afraid. Oh, life is good."The rescue headquarters received nearly four million yuan (586,000 U.S. dollars) in donations and "countless" materials.Li Guangfei, a 41-year-old farmer from neighboring Shaanxi Province, drove his truck for more than 20 hours with his wife to donate 10,000 yuan, about 10 percent of their annual income earned from growing potatoes and vegetables and transporting coal."I hope the money can help tired rescuers buy some milk," he said. His feeling was shared by Sun Yali, who sold pork near the mine. She brought 10 pigs to the site, hoping the rescuers could enjoy the meat after 12 days of round-the-clock work.Volunteers are also busy helping the rescue.Zhang Huajie, 29, a shop owner, has been helping out wherever he can and has donated goods worth of more than 10,000 yuan."My personal strength is weak, but I share the common mission of rescuing the trapped," he said.

SHANGHAI, May 6 (Xinhua) -- More than 33 million Shanghai World Expo tickets have been sold, according to the latest statistics from the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.A total of 33.11 million tickets, including 23.96 million individual tickets and 9.15 million group tickets, had been sold as of Thursday, the statistics showed. As of 5:30 p.m. Thursday, a total of 902,300 people had visited the Shanghai World Expo Park.On Thursday, 105,600 people visited the Expo as of 5:30 p.m. but this was a sharp drop compared with more than 200,000 people on May 1, the opening day.A spokesman from the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination said even though the Expo lasts for 184 days, ticket holders should consider coming earlier as that would mean avoiding the huge crowds expected before the end of the event.

YUSHU, Qinghai, April 20 (Xinhua) -- The death toll has climbed to 2,064 from a devastating earthquake in northwest China's Qinghai Province, with 175 people still missing, the rescue headquarters said Tuesday. As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, the 7.1-magnitude quake, which struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu at 7:49 a.m. Wednesday, had also left 12,135 injured, of whom 1,434 were in serious condition, the rescue headquarters said.

JINAN, May 2 (Xinhua) -- A Hong Kong cargo ship sank off Weihai City, east China's Shandong Province, Sunday after a collision with a Liberian-registered freighter, rescuers said. All 46 crew members of the two vessels were safe after the accident at 5:23 a.m., the city's maritime safety bureau said in a statement. The accident could have occurred in foggy conditions at the time, said Li Zhiqiang, an official with the city's maritime safety bureauThe 23 Chinese crew of the Hong Kong-registered Bright Century and the 23 Indian crew of the Liberia-registered Sea Success had been rescued as of noon, he said.Water had flooded into the damaged prow of the Sea Success, but the vessel was still afloat. The bureau had dispatched a ship to shadow the vessel as it was still in negotiations with the owner about the cost of towing the ship to port. The bureau is investigating the cause of the accident.
