SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man under arrest was hospitalized Sunday night after San Diego Police said he slipped out of his handcuffs and got a hold of an officer's gun, leading to an officer-involved shooting at the department's downtown headquarters.According to police, a 25-year-old Hispanic man was arrested shortly after 6:20 p.m. after an incident at a downtown San Diego hotel. A hotel security guard reported the man was “acting strange” and threatening others.Officers took the man to SDPD headquarters on 1401 Broadway, but just after 8 p.m. police said the man somehow freed himself from his handcuffs while inside the patrol SUV, and then broke a divider that separates the prisoner seat area from the cargo area.Police said it was in the cargo area were the man located an officer’s backpack that contained a backup handgun.Officers went to check on the arrestee after hearing noise and saw that he was still in the vehicle but armed with a gun. Officers drew their weapons but backed up from the car.Police said, “Officers gave the male commands to drop the weapon, but he refused to do so. The male fired at least one round from the handgun.”The officers felt threatened at that point, prompting them to fire at least one round, hitting the man at least once in the torso.According to police, “The male reached out the car window, opened the door and exited the patrol vehicle. He was still armed with the handgun and would not comply with officers’ directions. The male tried to open both the rear cargo compartment and the driver’s door of the patrol vehicle, despite officers’ orders to stop. Because he still posed a threat, a Police Service Dog was deployed on the male. The canine bit the male and officers were able to approach and subdue him. The male was still armed with the handgun at the time of his arrest.”After officers provided aid to the man at the scene, he was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.SDPD’s Homicide Unit is investigating the officer-involved shooting.Police stated the following information in a news release:“The names of the officers involved in this incident are not being released at this time, but they have been with the department for 8 years, 6 years and 10 months, respectively.The investigation and review process for an officer-involved shooting is extremely thorough. When the Homicide Unit completes their investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. The Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an investigation to determine if there were any policy violations, and the Shooting Review Board will evaluate the tactics used by the officers. The Community Review Board on Police Practices will conduct a review of the incident and provide any appropriate recommendations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man sentenced to life behind bars after being convicted of shooting his coworker in his face. Julio Narvaez pleaded guilty to opening fire at his Phamatech company in 2017. "The consequences are something he has to bare," said judge Laura Halgren at his sentencing on Friday. Narvaez pleaded not guilty to shooting his coworker in the face at their Carmel Mountain Ranch office. Police say they got into an argument when Narvaez pulled out a gun from his desk and opened fire. The victim, Michael Limbag, is also the cousin of Narvaez's wife. He's still recovering two years later. "He has hearing loss," said Halgren. "There’s a fragment bullet in his brain that could move at any time. He has headaches every day, nightmares."The defense brought in a neurologist to testify. He said Narvaez may have a connection to Alzheimer's, but could not make a definitive diagnosis. That move then backfired for the defense. "If this really did play a role in Mr. Narvaez’s behavior, then he poses a danger and will continue to pose greater danger," said Halgren. "Whatever degenerative process he has could be offered an explanation for some of the behavior but doesn’t excuse it."Police say Narvaez tried to shoot the victim at least twice, but the gun jammed. He pleaded guilty to attempted murder and use of a firearm with bodily injury. 1362

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego college student out for a run was attacked by a swarm of bees — stung at least a hundred times — in the North County.Jaeyoung Choi tells ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena that he was running on a bike path near SR-56 and Carmel Valley Road on Aug. 4, when he started noticing the bees."Next thing I know, a couple bees are hitting me thought it was no big deal and then there were a lot more bees and then a lot more bees and then all of a sudden I'm getting swarmed," Choi said.During the attack, Choi said he saw a man in a beekeeper outfit and tried to get help from him, though he was unsuccessful."Did not speak any English at all the beekeeper so I couldn't get the guys info or even know if he's licensed or not, just one guy there, just really weird," Choi said.Eventually, a cyclist came across Choi and called 911, and Choi was rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital. There, he learned he had been stung more than 100 times."At the hospital, they pulled out around 150 stingers or so basically swelled up to a balloon," said Choi.Choi says a week since the attack, his body is still reacting and breaking out in hives. He's also still dealing with the medical bills from the incident."I just can't imagine if it were somebody younger or a lot older I definitely think they would've left in a body bag," Choi said.James McDonald, a professional beekeeper and owns Encinitas Bee Company, said based on the bees' behaviors, he believes they were a form of Africanized "Killer Bees," adding that San Diego is home to plenty of them."They're called 'killer bees' for a reason, they kill people," McDonald said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego County public defense attorney is accused of providing a felon with a firearm, according to local law enforcement.  San Diego Police confirm that Andrea Bayer was arrested on August 1 and booked into Las Colinas women’s jail on charges related to selling, supplying or delivering a firearm to either a convicted felon or someone wanted on a felony warrant. She was released the same day on bond.  On the State Bar of California’s website, it shows that the 37 year-old’s license is still active and that she works as an Alternate Public Defender for San Diego County. The District Attorney’s Office says Bayer has not been charged and the case remains under review. A Group Communications Officer with San Diego County sent us the following statement: “The County of San Diego cannot comment on personnel matters. Ms. Bayer is currently on leave from her position pending the outcome of the investigation. The Public Defender believes in the presumption of innocence and has faith in the judicial process.” 1070

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man is searching for the good Samaritan who pulled him from a rip current in La Jolla this week.Patrick Fitzpatrick was swimming at Windansea Beach Tuesday."It took a snap second before I was in control to completely out of control," Fitzpatrick recalled, after becoming caught in a rip current. "There was no way on Earth that I was going to live from this. I was in a panic. I couldn't use my arms and legs now."Someone on shore, only known as "Dustin," noticed Fitzpatrick struggling and swam out to help him."He's a guardian angel. He owe him my life, he saved my life," Fitzpatrick says.Dustin swam out and kept Fitzpatrick calm before more help could arrive and get him to shore.Fitzpatrick is hoping to reunite with his mystery rescuer to say thank you."The humanity that comes from an act of kindness like this, from a perfect stranger," Fitzpatrick said. 892
